Thinking Ahead to a small trade, up to an Elias Lindholm sized trade, there's a (very good) chance that we have to shed a roster player or two to be cap compliant. Not an easy thing to do when a team has such good chemistry.

Last year Reilly (sent down), Craig Smith and Stud were the guys. Obvious non-core underperformers. Haula before that was a true hockey trade.

So this year who are the only remotely plausible names we could trade to get cap compliant without upsetting the team chemistry or depth? I'll list some uncontroversial names and maybe some more controversial ones. I didn't put Lohrei because I guess he's not counting against the cap presently. I also recognize that the guys listed on nearly league minimum certainly don't make much sense, nor would they offer much relief. Hence the bind...

Gryz and Ullmark should've been gone before the season started. Debrusk and Forbort I'd deal without too much angst. Shattenkirk bring some value at only 1 year 1 mill

The kids are all untouchable unless they're bringing back a Lindholm

Absolutely Gryz, I'd drive him to the airport.

Debrusk I'd move if the right trade comes along and you know you can't re-sign him. He's frustrating and inconsistent but is an impactful player when he's on. And I don't think you're going to find comparable value to deal him without weakening the team this year, so I don't see anything materializing on that front.

I also picked Steen and Boqvist, not that I'd actively shop them but if they went out in a trade I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I voted everyone but Ullmark. Everybody else (in the right deal) could be dealt and see improvement on the ice.

Losing Ullmark would compromise the chemistry in goal.

Is there any chance that Swayman is an alpha, who wants alpha start volume, and that having a defined started in the playoffs actually makes things easier on the goalie?

Devil's advocate and all.

Because to me Linus not being traded at the coming draft would be shocking, bordering on negligent. To me the reason to not deal him this year is because how hard it is to actually do.

I agree with all but Ullmark lol. I'd move him too. Swayman amd Ullmark are great together but this team plays great in front of all their goalies and I think Bussi could step right in. If Ullmark brings make a top 4 defenseman or top 6 forward, Id move him yesterday

I didn't put Gryz in my AOF trade thread because I'm of the assumption that Sweeney is keeping his goalie & defensive depth into the playoffs.

Edit: not saying I agree with that, but it's what I presume.

I think we have some results already that belie that concept. If Ullmark was holding Swayman back, it would be reflected in his current success.

I know it’s a sentiment common around these parts and I understand where it comes from. But me? I don’t change it. Ullmark stays. Stay with what’s working and improve in areas that need improvement. If Pastrnak alone is worth $11M/yr, then I can’t say different about a similar investment in goal.

I think any bottom pairing D or any ahl/nhl tweener can easily go with out moving the needle. That’s how I made my selections. The bruins are deep and have plenty of options for the bottom of the lineup.

Believe me, I understand the opinion. I probably shared it at some point this offseason.

But even in the way the question has been presented, with a focus on team chemistry… It’s my assertion that Ullmark and Swayman make each other better.

If you trade DeBrusk, the assumption is that you’re trading “up” to improve scoring. If you trade Ullmark, you’re not doing so to improve goaltending. You’re compromising the chemistry of the position.

Not a right or wrong thing - I feel it’s more simply a difference of opinon.

I don't see the point of half of the players on this poll when it comes to cap compliancy. They don't make enough money to matter. Their roster spot would still have to be filled by someone. There is no savings there. Several of them have next to no trade value.

The only players on the poll even worth discussing are Forbort, Gryz, Debrusk and Ullmark.

The only one I wouldn't deal between now and the deadline is Ullmark. This two-headed monster in net system works clearly and could carry the Bruins a long way come April/May. Reevaluate in the off-season.

I only see 3 D on Boston who are absolute locks to play every night. McAvoy, Lindholm and Carlo.

The rest are basically in a rotation between Gryz/Forbort/Shattenkirk/Wotherspoon. With Lohrei it seems the next man up from Providence and also Zboril and Mitchell with NHL experience.

If it's cap space that's required, Gryz or Forbort would be candidates to go.

Debrusk is the dark horse here. Would be part of a larger deal but given his UFA status he has to be at the very least be considered. If he was extended before the deadline then obviously he's not going anywhere.

Sweeney has to look at everyone who will be a UFA. Which includes Debrusk if not signed by TDL. I think Grizz, JVR and Steen should all be with different teams after the TDL.

JVR? There’s no reason to trade JVR especially at his salary.

I don't see why any of the three should be traded before the TDL. Grizz hasn't been great this year, but he is still a versatile and reasonably effective D (and wouldn't bring much back in a trade anyway). JVR is the kind of veteran player the B's normally try to add at TDLs, and Steen would at least be a serviceable member of the Black Aces. I hope the B's can extend Debrusk, who has reached a new level this season.
