The Oilers are an old team

The Broberg thing is interesting.

If a player can look like a tweener on one team and a top 4 stud on another I think that has more to do with the coaching staff and development team than the on ice personnel and player.

He looks fantastic, right now
Or maybe just maybe said player wanted out and was already checked out and is now having fun on new team with new Chance. Let's not act like this is the first player to blossom with a new team and fresh start people

I mean he got 12 regular season games. Can't get anything going on defense with that. Gets thrown in during playoffs, does okay but gets smashed when put in the top 4. Blues just bet money it was Nurse that was the problem, not him.

Pretty small sample size right now.

Me personally think Broberg looked pretty good on Oilers games. Sucks losing him lots of potential. But he ain't worth no 4 mil a season right now

It almost brings me to tears knowng that the Oilers could have signed him for $1.8m.... but I guess he wasn't worth that either.
However, lets put that aside. $4m for 2nd pairing RD Broberg or $6m for Perry, Henrique, and the two Brown boys? Or what the hell.. $4m for a past his prime Arvidson?
The Oilers have foolishly spent $4m+ on a lot of useless players. I would say coughing up $4m for Broberg would have been a wiser destination for the money. St Louis certainly thinks so.

Once again October's Oilers are making me sad. :(
They need a fourth forward under the age of 30
Yet 26 year old Noah Philp is sitting right there in the minors... I'm not sure why they can't just call the kid up and give him a chance with the strong pre season he just had. He'd at least be hungry to make an impact.

I do think they dropped the ball definitely on broberg, he was most likely worth the 1.8 mill

The perry contract still has me swearing at the TV every game .....

Because then they would have to waive someone which they don’t want to do or else they will be right at the cap which mean no deadline cap space to try and salvage this roster.

Broberg asked for a trade last fall and did not retracted it. He did not want to be an oiler any more
We all know he asked for s trade her want even playing in the NHL at the time, That's about it but you've think someone who became a regular in the playoffs right up to game 7 of the Stanley cup final night change his mind. Who knows......

But perhaps that's also why the Oilers weren't in a rush to sign him knowing he checked out as an oiler

After shipping out all of their young players and replacing them with older, softer vets, the Oilers are having an absolutely God-Awful start to the season. This team is a lot worse than last year as it has lost most of its youth and sand-paper, instead opting to bring in soft (Skinner) or oft-injured players (Arvidsson) to replace what they lost.

But to make matters worse, Broberg looks absolutely legit and well-worth the 4 million + salary, Holloway is starting to find his game, Foegele is playing well, even McLeod is turning into a fine addition for the Sabres. All of these players had amazing nights yesterday. The McLeod/Savoie trade, actually, was a really stupid one as Savoie isn't even in the NHL.

All of this has compounded itself into a gigantic problem in Edmonton and if McDrai aren't going scorched earth on the league, that team is absolutely terrible and this is reflected by the Oilers being in 14th position. What's shocking is that the team has only scored 14 goals, and let in 27 so far, another unsurprising statistic considering how bad the defense is and how poorly constructed the offense is.

The summer of 2024 was pure lunacy in Oil territory, and I will never understand why the team gutted its roster that was basically 1-2 goals away from winning the cup. Shockingly horrendous mismanagement could see this team very realistically miss the playoffs and end up as one of the worst in the western conference. I honestly can't wrap my head around what happened to this team.

Discuss.

C'mon, it's not that bad, but they certainly aren't a top team in that situation. True for other teams as well. If Kucherov and Hedman are struggling, same for Lightning, and many other teams.

Losing Broberg was a horrible mistake. They should have shipped out someone else to make room for his salary.

Perhaps the Jets are Canada's best hope this year?

Out of qualified pairings in this young season

To say Nurse and dermott are getting slaughtered when they are the ice would be in understatement

The McLeod trade was due to them choosing Henrique as the 3C, no? How has he looked? McLeod has been one of Buffalo's best forwards. We're not expecting him to continue playing like a top-6 C, but I do think Buffalo has their two-way 3C of the future, which is not easy to find, and why it cost such a good prospect in Savioe.

The hope from EDM was Savoie grabs a spot out of camp, and is a cheap contributor on the team. That didn't come to fruition, but he still can become a damn good player in this league, so I'm not sure if it's the fact they traded McLeod for Savoie that's the issue, but perhaps chossing Henrique over McLeod may become an issue? Still early in the year, though, and as I said, most Sabres fans don't expect McLeod to play like a top-6 C.

Not mature enough yet. Just needs a little more seasoning. Maybe in a couple years.

To be fair, I don’t think most savvy Oilers fans were thrilled with that move. Garden variety homers and typical HFB “Pronman’s prospect pool rankings are more important than trying to win” fanboys were the ones overhyping the “#10 pick for a 3rd liner lololol what a steal” trope.

The Oilers are 2-5. How many of the 32 teams had a 2-5 stretch last year where players went cold that was buried in the season that anybody noticed outside their own team forums, lay alone had a thread made about? 24? 28? Almost everybody? The Oilers did this but much worse last year and were a period from the Cup. All this thread is is “early season we got nothing else to talk about” fodder.
What are you talking about? There’s a whole thread about most Oilers fans saying trade of the century.
