I simply disagree. We don't seem to be in disagreement regarding Bernard's run defense. Or his blitzing skills. They are, at best, meh.

So his coverage skills seem to be where we part ways. Which, in fairness, coverage is particularly hard to assess, as relevant metrics are hard to come by. But I can't say I've ever watched Bernard and thought to myself "well, we can probably play a bunch of man against the Raiders next week if we want to, because I'm fine letting Bernard take Bowers." I just don't see him as that level of player. And to be honest, I don't really know of anyone who does. Frankly, it's pretty telling to me that no one in here seems to be talking about Bernard as some elite coverage guy to justify this deal. He's not Fred Warner or prime Bobby Wagner or something. He's fine. But nothing special there either.
But he doesn't need to play man, the LBs almost exclusively play zones and he's not Milano but he's certainly above average. He gets exposed when contain breaks down but most do, and he still makes plays on the fly. I think it's a plus side to his game already and likely to get better with experience.

Every move so far has bought cap space and starters for at least 3 years, excellent start to the off-season for Beane

Next up isn't Benford or Cook. Or even McGovern.

It's Reid Ferguson.

I don't think Beane is down with Cook being so public about stuff.

Shakir didn't go to socials and got a deal.

Bernard didn't go to socials and got a deal.

Rousseau didn't go to socials and got a deal.

Benford will be interesting. He is the one guy in this group that has a solid case for a top of market deal and that might be tough for the Bills to do. Just like Tremaine wanted the bag and they let him go, it could be tough to get a deal done if Benford isn't willing to take a little less to stick around.

I think McGovern wants to stay. His dad was having some Twitter interactions (likes & replies to various people including me) and he deleted a bunch of replies. It was like Connor found out and told him to knock it off.

So, I'm sort of expecting a McGovern extension next in large part because it can save the Bills on the 2025 cap.

Would everyone take Sweat, say @ 4/75M for the the Bill's other side ?
I think Sweat is going to get closer to 4/$100M than 4/$75M.

The FA market is thin and plenty of teams have that sweet, sweet cap space burning a hole in their pocket.

Some GM is going to overpay him.

And coming off of getting a ring, I think he chases the bag.

Bernard didn't have a great 2024.

But, he got paid like a good, but not great MLB.

They value his leadership (the only other captain than 17) and he does make splash plays.

The best thing they can do is get better DT play in front of him. They need to have the DL keep the LBs & TJ clean because they are light and fast. It's like how they need the OL to keep the RBs clean.

I would not be horribly upset if they don't get McGovern extended. That's why they drafted and have VPG. Still, the line had good chemistry and that would be good to keep and also not have Josh to acclimate to a new and young center.

This is McGovern's age 28 season. I think they would rather lock him up than count on a day 3 guy who barely played last year and likely won't play this year heading into next season.

And I wouldn't be shocked if this is on the high end of what it takes to get McGovern extended given what the Bills paid him as a FA just a couple of years ago.

They did keep VPG on the active roster all season without risking loosing him (through practice squad) . That does say something. But he is clearly the backup and B option.

McGovern was a day two, 3rd round pick without any National Championship experience that the Cowboys let go to FA (Thanks Jerry).

You repeated pretty much the rest of what I said but sometimes you have to get in your lightly condescending shtick, I get it.

I just expect them to try and extend McGovern who has been solid at G and C while also lowering his 2025 cap hit especially since he isn't over the hill and entering his prime.

David Edwards is the only starter on the OL that I could see them moving on from after 2025.

And the SVPG part is overstated because he wasn't even the guy that got snaps at center when McGovern was dinged up last season. Alec Anderson was the next man up because SVPG was inactive most weeks.

I get that we don't actually play a lot of man. I was just using the "I wouldn't want him to leave him on one one against Bowers" example to highlight the fact that I don't think he's anything special in coverage. So what you're left with is a guy who is pretty meh at just about everything in my view, and he plays a relatively low value position to boot. I wouldn't give a $50m to a player like that.

Bernard isn’t a downhill LB. That’s not the scheme McD runs. He’s also not being paid premium money. It’s a good contract, for a good player. He wasn’t as good last season as the previous one. I think an improved Dline will bring out the best of him.

I bet the Hendrickson number is over 30 million per now. Makes me like that idea even less unless the compensation is literally a day 3 pick.

Bringing Khalil Mack back to Buffalo might be my favorite edge rusher idea right now

I just hate the idea of relying on a pass rusher pass his prime to be a difference maker, but other than Sweat or a ridiculous trade/sign for Parsons (assuming Cincy does not trade Hendrickson in conference), it's either a broken Bosa, Jonathan Allen on the interior, or Mack. Not great pickings.

Mack just turned 34.

I think he’s cooked. Let someone else overpay him.
