It’s a lot more than the rumored packages Carolina was being offered for Necas in the summer as an RFA. And that was when you could try to lock down Necas long-term immediately rather than having to wait and see if he would sign in 6 months like Colorado has to.

Young top 6 forward and 2 1sts and 2 3rds. No one was offering that for Necas.

Go back to the Hronek trade rumors and most comments were Carolina would have to add to Necas to get Hronek from Vancouver.
Things change quickly, the league has always been a 'what have you done for me lately'.

Necas was coming off a 53 pt/73 game season, whereas he put up 55 pts/49 games this season. In that same timespan Detroit had to pay a 2nd to dump Walman to Edmonton paying a 1st.

If you made a poll the majority of fans would take Necas + Drury + 2nd + 4th over Stankoven + 2 1sts + 2 3rds. Especially when you consider those picks are lottery protected.

The guy who's been at a 40 goal and 97 point pace over the last 7 years isn't a core piece?

This is so rich. The changes of tune in a matter of a month is hilarious.

Rants is an elite player IF he makes the effort. After the SC run, Rants became a passenger to Mack and wasn’t moving his feet. For $12M, Rants wasn’t a core piece anymore especially since the Avs were becoming a top heavy team . They are a much more balanced team now and can roll four effective lines. That’s a huge deal for the SC run.

Hopefully Rants ups his work ethic in Dallas. If so, the Stars will profit. Given the cap increase, this was a good move for the Stars and their system is probably more favorable for Rants to thrive offensively. But I think signing Mikko would’ve been a mistake for the Avs and Canes.

Yes, with Necas in particular the value changes quickly. That is what he’s perceived as being worth right now, but he has a habit of long droughts, even season long at times as you note.

Carolina thought they could leverage a highly variable player who was likely to leave as a UFA into a long term core piece. When that didn’t work they were able to salvage a good amount of value, and more than they were offered before the season.

As I said earlier, if Stankoven can take over 2C it solves one of Carolina’s biggest holes. If he’s a 1W, he’s probably a downgrade on Necas albeit one that fits Carolina’s style play much better.

Carolina has a lot of draft capital and a ton of cap space to build the team for the next set of years. The Rantanen move was about acquiring a long term piece more than going all in this season, and now they can try again this off-season.

You have to be pretty narrowminded to say that, they made the best of the situation and got a insane return for someone like Necas and will be able to upgrade the team in the offseason. The initial trade for Rantanen was good but didnt work out, they ended up recieving a better return for Rantanen than Colorado did in my opinion.
edit: but the real winner will be Dallas on this one getting the best player involved.
So Carolina shipped out a 2nd rounder and a 4th they received two 3rds

2 1st rounders and sthankoven

So Mikko and necas are bad comparable and bring different things to the team. They are 1point apart.
Seeing what Colorado gave up for Nelson and the prices this year. Necas could have easily returned 2+ first rounders plus they also got drury a average 3c but a pretty damn good 4c and I’d say he’s worth more then Laughton and what he returned.

Colorado got pieces for this year to win a cup.

I’m not familiar with sthankoven but his size would have been someone I personally wouldn’t want.

Carolina wanted a player to put them over the top. And ended up with futures.

Clearly not since they kicked his ass to the curb.

The changes of tune have more to do with how out of touch people were a month ago than anything else

Pretty dumb way to negotiate witha core prime piec
It looks like to me the avs kinda wanted to move on a bit and find someone that fits their style better, not to mention his play has slipped.hasn’t been engaged as much as years prior. Maybe the analytics which Colorado does really well didn’t support his self perceived value. Mikko has been noted as a tough guy to sign Carolina can attest to this.

Since their cup run, Mack, Toews, Nuke got significant raises. Lost kadri and some depth pieces. And they won 1 rd the last 2 years. Colorado looked at their situation and realized they couldn’t compete for a cup with rants new caphit, since they are not even competing with his current caphit. You win cups with guys like necas at a 6.5 mil caphit, you don’t win with rants at a 12 mil caphit.

Avs could win with an engaged Rants @ 12 mil. The problem was he got complacent and we haven't seen that level of compete in years. He was more engaged in his first game with Dallas and short stint in Carolina than he was with the Avs because he could let Mack and Makar do all the work and still produce.

Yeah, and if you saw this, I’m sure bednar saw this to and was asked his opinion from sakic and co. And a decision was made

Colorado got Mike Hoffman'd.

They should have had the Hoffman clause where Carolina has to give them a 1st if he is on the reserve list of a team in Colorado's division.

This is a borderline fireable offense, but not for the team everybody thinks. Colorado just gave up a franchise player, within the division, and it was another team who got the value for doing it.

It is also an embarrassment that lends credit to the idea that Rantanen would have caved and stayed at a discount. Would he have stayed in Colorado for 12M? Maybe not due to taxes. But is 12.5M or 13M that crazy?

Carolina also gave up a 3rd, but it was for Taylor Hall - the retention on Rantanen was a proxy for retention on Hall since Rantanen's cap hit was larger - so I think it's fair not to include it.

I find this to be a very compelling situation. It is one of the biggest trade deadline trades of the cap era. Are you surprised people are interested in discussing it?
Oh I'm all for discussing it. I'm just suggesting that it's weird how much you're pushing this angle lol. Majority of people do not agree with the bizarre lens you are using to view it

I am not the one in this thread astro turfing for the Avalanche organization by attacking the posters rather than discussing their arguments. Your posts are all over at least the last page doing that.

I think the cat doth protest too much.

I just happen to have a more informed opinion on what MY team was thinking during this saga, and why they did what they did. You can continue to just make shit up though, if you desire

I agree that you're almost certainly more informed about the Avalanche than I am, but you wouldn't know it by your posts.

A good majority of your posts are just you attacking the person rather than informing or educating them with your vast knowledge of the Colorado Avalanche. You are all over at least the last page (and I imagine the previous 45) doing this.

I hope you're one of Joe Sakic's interns or else you're astro-turfing for the Avalanche for free.

Why would I bother to educate someone who is only posting in bad faith?
