well considering their cap hell situation and the potential to add even more dead cap with a Garrett trade, not sure Browns can even afford to take on Groots $13m for 1 year, then pay him. They'll probably want a straight pick package to acquire rookie contracts. They're really going to have to take their medicine this season and start backup & rookie salaries to make it work.

Here is another reason why a potential Myles Garrett trade will be tough. If Cleveland trades him before the draft, he will count around $16.5M MORE against the 2025 cap than if they keep him.

And he counts around $21.5M against the 2026 cap if they wait and trade him post-6/1.

So, not only do they lose their franchise player, it makes their bad cap situation way worse.

That adds to the fact that they won't be looking for a player on a 5th year option who will want a big contract for 2026 and beyond in the deal. They will need as many picks as possible to get cheap players on rookie deals for the next few years as they try and work through the dead cap from a Garrett trade and the disaster of a contract they gave to Watson.

And McDermott said you need guys on both sides of the football that are top 3 at their position.

Comparing the Browns to the Bills is funny.
Beane also knows it isn't just about having one or 2 top 3 guys on each side of the ball. You need depth of talent on each side of the ball to compete.

EXCELLENT research .. the Browns almost blew up the start of Kermit hopefully beane finds a way unless there are guys in top 61 this year as we have three lottery tickets like the GIANTS kid ..

don't we all trust Mr Beane , I know I do.. character and talent equals POINT DIFFERENTIAL

It would suck if the Browns refused to trade him to Buffalo because they are in the AFC.

I don't know why it would matter. IF they trade Garrett, they are committing to a two year reset, essentially. We are playing IN cleveland this year, but after they wouldn't see him for another 3 years unless they won the division.

This is the move. This is the missing piece. The dominant defensive player to put us over the top. We still need other pieces too....but still. Every player on that d-line gets better if Myles Garret is there. I bet Cooper is willing to take a big discount to come back if we are bringing in Garret. We probably are committing to a 3 year window with lots of dead cap in our future....but its now or never.

Imagine opening the new stadium in 2026 with a super bowl banner raising.

You don't have to sell me on why trading for Garrett makes a lot of sense for the Bills.

I think the biggest barrier to a Garrett trade is the Browns mess of a cap situation.

Today, they have the 2nd worst 2025 cap situation in the NFL. They are $27.5M over the 2025 cap with almost $40M in dead cap.

And they have to wait until 6/1 to trade Garrett without pushing that dead cap well over $70M and putting them over $60M over the cap.

I will be pretty surprised if they trade him before 6/1.

So, if you're the Browns, you're getting bent over the cap both pre-draft and post-draft trades. The real question is do you split the cap hit over 2 years or just eat it all one year?

My initial thought is to trade post June 1st and split the cap hit between 2025 and 2026.

Edit: from a Buffalo perspective, you'd want to spread out the draft picks in 2025 and 2026 for a potential Garrett trade. But, if Cleveland wants to go post-June 1st, I don't think that counts Buffalo out. They'd just be light on draft choices in 2026 and 2027 (Bills are only missing a 2026 6th round pick). But Beane could load up in 2025.

From a Cleveland POV -- I avoid QBs like the plague this year.....run with Winston or whoever at QB in 2025, take the cap hit entirely in 2025......."tank" for a QB in the 26 draft and reload.

I'm not sure they can. They are already $27.5M over the cap for 2025. Adding another $36M to that might make cap compliance impossible.

The Watson deal is worse that the Wilson deal.

They've just gotta suck it up with the Watson deal until after the 2026 season....they don't really have much of a choice. Strip the rest of it down to bare bones in anticipation of a megaton of cap room in 2027 with a new starting QB already entrenched.

In theory, yes absolutely. But looking at their current cap, I don't think they can take a full Garrett dead cap hit in 2025. Before they do anything in 2025, they are about $35.7M over the cap (with draft picks included, so it is an estimate on Spotrac).

Just to get cap compliant, with a Garrett trade post-June 1st, it required restructuring of Watson, Ward, Conklin, and Tomlinson just to get to about $6.5M under the cap. That allows the Browns to do what they need to do to properly have a roster with all positions full. It'll be an all-on tank season.

Trying not to make this as pro-Bills as I can, but I think it'd benefit the Browns to take 2026 and 2027 picks, and trade Garrett post-June 1st. From a Browns perspective, I'd much rather have extra picks next season and the year after. QBs like Manning, Iamaleava, Sellers, and Allar are all in the next two draft classes.

What stinks for Cleveland is that they aren't 3-14 bad if they could get average QB play. Probably a 9-8/8-9 team. But, a big part of that is having Myles Garrett.

Realistically, they aren't going to be a contender. You have two bad years left of Watson dead cap. You are going to have 2 bad years of Garrett dead cap now.

You sell off pieces that aren't going to be prime age in 2 years, little at a time, and amass picks and talent. It sucks for Cleveland, but its the bed they made with the stupid Watson contract. In their division, with Ravens, Cincinatti, and Pittsburgh, your absolute best hope is a wild card berth that you will get slaughtered going to Buffalo, Baltimore, Houston, or KC in the Wild Card round.

If they do this right, they can come out the other side with 2 franchise cornerstones (2nd overall this year and a QB next year) as well as ton of top two day talent that you can develop. Myles garrett will be walking in 2 years regardless

I wonder if Beane can move one of our 2nd rounders for a 2nd rounder next year

They can't just sell off every decent player because of the dead cap they accrue via trades. They still need to have a 53 man roster that is cap compliant.

If they trade Garrett prior to 6/1, they will have over $75M in dead cap in 2025 without trading any other player away. That makes it hard to put a roster together when you factor in that Watson counts $50M+ against the cap this year even with a base salary restructure that makes the dead cap for his void years even worse in 2027.

You don't do it all at once, you do it over two years where you can.

Its shitty to essentially punt two seasons, especially for a long suffering fan base....there isn't a way to be relevant though until you get through the Watson dead cap.

Quick off-season plan (did it on Spotrac, everything worked):

Restructures:
Oliver
Knox
Samuel

Cut:
Miller

Early extensions:
Cook
Benford
Shakir

Free Agent:
Levi Wallace, CB

Trades:
- Elam to the Giants for Jalin Hyatt, WR
- 2026 1st, 2027 1st, 2026 3rd, 2027 6th to Cleveland for Garrett, 2026 7th and 2026 3rd (Mack trade)

Draft (mostly just picking the BPA as it aligned to need)

I'd try to add another CB at some point, but I think this would put the Bills is a great position to make a run the next few years.
