Letter to media,
You are killing yourselves. Over the air offerings are strangling themselves.
1) Very little new content
2) Limited depth of information/content/quality
3) way too much breaks
4) Clownish/Childish presentation. Seemingly aimed at 12 year old grade schoolers.
Whether it is sports medias or news or general entertainment. All are going down the same path. And it is becoming unwatchable/unconsumable.
TSN radio or Tv, Sportsnet, CNN, CBC, CTV, NBC, etc. have been reduced to minimal content.
TSN tv/radio gives you 4-5 hours of new content a day. And they then stretch that content to 8-10 hours by an unbearable amounts of stops for commercials.
CNN has become "the Talk" or "the View". People talking about a limited number of subjects over and over again and little to no world wide reporting. And they offer their shows with the "this hour has 22 minutes" approach.
You will kill your own industry. You have injured it already. Yes, people are tuning out. But that is a clear "horse before the cart". As content diminishes, we tune out! As presentation becomes more clownish, you are not gaining the 12 year old, you are losing his/her 65 year old grandparent.
You lost people younger than 40 long ago. Attempts at getting them back, simply loses their parents and Grandparents.
Compensating for lower ad rates by increased volume, is also a fail. TV remote controls are easy buttons to hit. Radio dials or the on/off switch is easy to hit. Turning your attention from TV/Radio to a PED during the extended breaks is common.
My wife would sit with her IPAD. And as we watched TV, I would complain about some commercial. She would say "what commercial?". I have now discovered that rechargeable batteries are a cure for commercials on TV.
But I have also discovered something else. Living without. In late summer I downgraded by cable package to a basic one. Saved $40 and am now debating a total cancelation.
You are following the Eugene Melnyk method for running your business. His come, pay your money and then I will spend, FAILD.
By comparison, Andlauer's, I will spend, we will succeed and then you come. IS WORKING.
Please return to a more sensible approach. Content. Quality offering. And you will retain your viewers. And possibly regain the sub 40 year old. Remember, he/she will be 50 in 10 years, 60 in 20 and so on.
