Missing key players and people still complain . This team at full strength is where it should be , an improving team .
This team with the current rooster , is overachieving . And last few games being a tough road trip they being exposed . Not a bad thing if you ask me .

This thread doesn't have enough tank gif though. Team tank is getting sloppy.

That's a little harsh isn't it? Just 3 years ago we were in Cup Finals. With Dach this is a .500 team with a top farm system. Bundle of picks next two drafts.
Let s be real that was a fluke due to Covid, in fact the Habs have missed the playoffs since 2018. This team has had one good year in the last 7 seasons counting this one. A few years back BUF said exactly what you are saying now : look at all those prospects. Where are they now ? Eichel and Reinhart gone. Dahlin Power still here but not good enough, or not having enough support to do anything. I look at BOS they had a minor retool in 2014 but overall they were better than the Habs over the past 15 years. I think 2 years tanking is the most a team should do : get your top C and your top D and build from there.

I am not saying this core is bad or anything, my point is that it needs to start to show some progress. Slaf has, the others, not much. I am not sure there is a button play to win that you can activate when mgmt decides the tank is over

Losing Eichel messed Buffalo up bad. They should be further ahead than they are. That was bad luck.

As for us, the team only started a focused rebuild a couple of years ago. And we have shown progress. Unfortunately for us, two thirds of our top six are out with injury.

Look at what we have coming up though. One of the best (maybe the best) blueline prospect groups in the league. Roy, Mesar, Beck, another top pick and Cc and Slaf who are both under 24 and doing well. Plus we’ll have another top pick this year.

Honestly, if we had Dach and Newhook we might actually be in a playoff spot right now. We’re coming along just fine. In two years we’ll have tons of new faces to add to what we’ve already got. It’s not a bad place to be.

Do you think having Dach and Newhook gives MTL :
- 12-14 more points (i.e. + c. 30/40% more wins)
- 0.4 more goal per game and - 0.4 less goal against per game

I am not sure…

Also in my opinion MTL D core is overrated,
I like Reinbacher but I am waiting to see what he ll do in the NHL
I am not sure Mailloux will be well rounded enough to be in the NHL
Guhle is a nice top 4 guy but top 2 ? …
Harris Strubble Xhekaj seem 3rd pairing D
engstrom Hutson are question marks.

I’m not sure either. But we lead the league in one goal games. There have been few blowouts. Much of that is due to goaltending but we’ve been close almost every game.

The point is we e got a ton of guys who are on the way. We’re loaded on the back end. Some guys may not pan out but some guys will. If nothing else Hutson will transform the PP.

I agree that with Dach and Newhook the team would be challenging for a playoff spot. Dach and Newhook help the 1st line as there would another line for teams to worry about. And the players they replace would likely be negative value. Not to mention that HuGo would likely have to add at the deadline and keep Monahan.

Sure let s be the 06-17 Oilers !
Ridiculous. Even if the Habs tank this year they are a playoff contender next year if Dach and Newhook can stay healthy.

Agreed, as long as the Habs are healthy they should compete for the playoffs next year.

There will however be a step back from the loss of Monahan.

I’m still not convinced that Monahan can play a full season without spending significant time on IR. Surprised he’s played all of his games so far.

If they do bring him back, he’d be a great mentor for Beck and Roy.

I missed the game. But Monahan padded the stats and we lost. Nothing wrong with last night.

Monahan and Lindholm have the same age and number of points. Monahan is way more injury prone, but thrice as cheaper.

He's more than a plan B at the deadline.

Guhle - Parekh or Levshunov
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Mailloux

The top 4 would have the potential to be top pairing on most teams. The third pair potential for a top 4 on most teams. Let’s make it happen.

We can then trade the excess D for offensive depth and scoring

Yeah, we're going to end up like Nashville. Great D, average offense. I really hope the biggest failure of this organization is not getting a top 3 pick in 2023. Ideally, we wanted Slafkovsky in 2022. One of the top 3 centers in 2023, then we select our #1 D in 2024. Core built.

It doesnt always pan out like you want. Some teams made it impossible to out tank in 2023. Im still very happy with Reinbacher personally and the gap between Dach and Fantilli might not be that huge. Not a huge fan of Fantilli's IQ personally. If Dach can stay healthy we should be fine. There is also the Calgary pick, we have ton of assets and cap space, I trust Hughes to complete the puzzle.

We are likely ahead of Ottawa in our rebuild and unlike them, we still have some valuable vets to sell.

The Canes imo. All-around solid team, some good to great pieces but lacking finishing in the POs.

Good night for the tank.

Yoel and Gallagher scored in a loss. Yoel with 4 goals in 8 games. He must ready for another 2 months of hibernation.
We’re likely going to find a way to stay within top 10 for draft picks but I don’t see this season as being a tank.
