That's a loss-focused evaluation. With that logic the best way to get into the CFP is to not play any games at all.

It's loss-focused with the expectation that each team who believes they'll merit consideration will play a fairly rigorous schedule.

And they all do.

Or they could just go back to the old system where neither of them get in, like it probably should be.

I'm telling you. Do away with the National Championship completely and replace it with an FA Cup style tournament.

128 teams in FBS. It's perfect. Put them all in.

Can't wait for this feature in EA College Football 2017.

8 game regular season

7 game playoff

so many financial and logistical reasons that this would be a disaster

but from a fan perspective it would be incredible

For extra mojo:

Have an FCS equivalent, like the FA Trophy, and put the top finishing FCS teams into one of the late rounds of the FBS tournament.

My body is ready. Sad that there are billions of dollars to be lost under this scheme.

But seriously, I hate that there's no real FBS playoff. I mean, imagine the NFL playoffs, but exponentially more intense because it's your school's team (and possibly one or two of your buddies) on the field.

My honest-to-God best memories of football are from screaming full throat, banging on the bleachers, and jumping up and down just to stay warm as the wind and snow swirled around the stadium at mid-December games in Boone, knowing that a win meant I got to go back and do it again next week. My most gut-wrenching memory, even worse than last year's Super Bowl, was watching Appalachian go down 24-17 with 90 seconds left at a place called Hellgate Canyon, then drive 70+ yards down a snow-covered field, only to watch Brian Quick drop the game-tying pass in the endzone as time expired. That dropped pass punched Montana's ticket to the '09 championship game.

Sure, it was FCS, but that ending put me face down on the living room floor. Literally. Bowls have prestige and all, but you're one-and-done whether you win or lose. There's just no substitute for the win-or-go-home intensity of the playoffs.

I think the problem is everyone is so focused with the 'best' teams making the playoffs. But the best part of sports is that the best team doesn't always win. The team that WINS is the team that wins.

I think the best way of handling it is to keep the Plus 1, and make a Conference Championship a pre-req to be included. But what about weak divisions upsetting powerhouses in one game (like if Florida beat Bama)? Well scrap the divisions completely. The top two in each conference make the Conference Championship. Each team has 4 fixed games (rivalries) and 4 rolling games as a Conference schedule.

Now the integrity of conferences and their championships are preserved (rather than becoming formalities). Yes, there is still the option the 'best' team loses their championship, but too bad so sad, they didn't earn it! Think of the conference championships as the Wild Card round. If the 1 seed loses in the Wild Card round should they really be bailed out?

That would still lead to the problem of teams not having equal conference schedules, and getting lucky in avoiding certain teams in certain years. Not to mention some teams will probably be hosed or set up great with four constant rivalries. You could also get smoked out of conference, do really well in conference, and win it. Seems far from perfect to me.

Also seems like out of conference games matter a lot less in that format. Why is it okay that Penn St lost to mediocre Pitt? Why shouldn't it matter that OSU smoked a pretty good Oklahoma team?

No one cares who's actually best. Everyone cares about an awesome tournament. That's why no one gives two ***** about the Presidents Trophy and everyone wants Lord Stanley's Cup.

GOAT moment in the Grambling State//NC Central game. NC Central scored with 2 mins left, but homeslice who caught the TD, was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking his helmet off to celebrate the TD. Instead of taking it on the kick off, Grambling State made them take it on the PAT, and then blocked it.

10-9 State final.

Kinda feel bad for the Central player, but that is a dumb thing to do.
