But what did they gain by that strategy? They gained rarely having odd man situations along the half boards/down low. Rarely allowed 2-on-1s down low because there was always a collapsing forward to help out. Given that Henrik plays deep, risking deflections (that he would have more time to react to due to his style) but taking away lateral deke/pass plays makes a lot of sense to me.

It's nearly impossible to employ a strategy that defends against everything all the time. I think the Rangers did a damn good job of coming close. Everyone always whines about fixing things with zero thought given to what leaks doing so will open up.

Well said. Far too many people fail to acknowledge the give and take nature of the game. Like how AV will enhance the offense, cover the points, and everything else that worked will remain the same.

These are the same folks that don't criticize Sather despite year and year of plugging up one hole just have to have 2 others open.

Not entirely sure what that has to do with anything, I fully understand the give and take. Yet I don't criticize Sather very often, mostly because I learned a long time ago that *****ing about something doesn't change anything.

when ur giving up goals the SAME way over and over, it's time to adapt and try something else. look at how good the D played when they stayed pressuring the shooters in the final 2 games vs Washington, they had no clue what to do

You can't defend every player on the ice at all times. Not only does the collapsing down low give some of the most gifted offensive point men in the NHL ALL the space in the world, but it completely stifles offensive breakouts, because I doubt any sound minded coach is preaching to his players "okay, lets spend this entire shift in our zone, then we'll lug it out like we've got cinderblocks tied to our ankles, dump it and switch out, and then repeat". We have a great goalie I also trust to break up some 2 on 1 chances down low, at least Hank can SEE those shots and players, unlike half the point shots that he gets scored on that he never saw coming. I'd just rather this team play actual defense, and then transition to offense as a result. Not shot blocking, break your ankles defense that teams really started to see through this year.

Edit: What does the bolded have to do with ANYTHING?

If you keep getting scored on, repeatedly, in the same exact way...hell, by the same exact PLAYER...maybe it's time to even TRY something different, as opposed to the mindset seemingly being "Well gosh, darn it, we'll get it next time! Oh no, not again! Damn you, Torey Krug!"

I quite understand the give and take of the game. I've never made my thoughts on Sather public one way or the other. So not sure how or if I fall into the "these are the same people" category, or if I'm lucky enough to be one of those people who has an opinion that isn't automatically a drooling idiot because it's different than yours.

Looks like Rick Nash lost some weight

The Canadian camp made some players available at a press conference. Nash was one of them.

The guy sitting next to Bergeron. Nash,Bergeron,Luongo,Crosby and Weber spoke to the media

His face looks thinner

Yep, he looks thinner. Good thing. Hopefully it has a positive effect on his game, especially long term endurance.

A little off topic but I know all my fellow diehard Rangers fans on HF will see this. It feels good to be back even with camp and traverse city being 2 weeks away. I usually don't post too much on the summer, but now I am ready for hockey and I am completely excited to be back to talk to the 2013-14 Rangers season with each and every one of you. We can have some great posts and arguments here most of times but sometimes not so much haha. Cheers everybody, I hope everyone had an amazing summer. LETS GO RANGERS!

Matt

p.s: Are they gonna air the Traverse city prospects tournanment like they did 2 years ago? I really hope so.

I know this is getting old but any sauer updates? I know he didnt officially retire yet, but I wanna convince myself that hell make a comeback even though there's a 98% chance he won't :(

The U.S. camp begins today in Arlington,Virginia. Maybe one of the reporters will ask Derek Stepan about his contract. No ice for the U.S. and Canada. It costs $1.2M to insure each team. Both hockey organizations didn't want to spend that money. The U.S. camp is today and tomorrow. Canada runs through Wednesday.

Then what are they doing, hanging out in the gym? What is the point?

Video sessions, discussions on how they want the team to play and what they expect from the players. Probably some orientation stuff to prepare the players for Sochi.

I was listening to an interview with Yzerman, Lowe and a couple others on Sirius and one of the questions was about what they would lose by not being on this ice. Yzerman said it was mainly the coaches getting a feel for the players and how the lines might shape up. They don't use that ice time as a means of evaluation.

The Canadian team will be shown the team systems by the million coaches on their staff. They will have a walk through on dry land practicing their system. Sochi has a security issue. Its not Vancouver. No 5 star hotels in Sochi with hotel security. The players will be living in dorms like the other atheletes Its a 2 day trip so there will numerous charters leaving from all over North America. Hopefully its the last Olympics for a while for NHL players. South Korea in 2018.

I am glad we decided to keep Brad Richards. Truly. There was obvious reasons to his poor performance last year and I said it multiple times on here last season. His conditioning was poor, and how he treats his body (especially at his age) is no way to expect anything productive to come out of it.

Look at the best athletes and how they go through their off-season. Their productivity in the season starts from improving your game in the off-season. Look at any of the top athletes in any sport especially hockey. The best players are the guys who take their off-seasons seriously. And yea, maybe you see those guys like Richards who do the bare minimum and get by with their talents for the most part but sooner or later it catches up.

And as they get older, they dont realize how they have to change their attitudes and their schedules. Richards finally realized it.

He said it himself. He was out of shape. Bad conditioning. The lockout is a bad excuse, but its the truth.

This time he is here to revamp his entire program. He went with his old teammate St. Louis to train with him in the summer and that he is relooking at how he treats his body starting with his diet. I am shocked in this day of age to hear any athlete NOW finally wanting to eat healthier and take the off-season more seriously but better late than never.

I guarantee you that just by this change alone, Richards will be an improved player.

Well with a terrible road trip to start off. And the Rangers having a few players who will be playing for the Olympics, then its even more important that AV helps implement what he knows about the Sleep sciences that Vancouver had.

I believed the sleep science can help any team, no matter of travels. But its obviously even more beneficiary to a team that will be known to have a lot of travels

The insurance to allow them to play would cost them millions.

According to TSN,

the players will be involved in some off-ice drills and conditioning programs. A lot of team bonding. A lot of golf (oh oh... be careful #Giroux). A lot of video and team meetings to get use to the system that Babcock wants them to play. Meet the coaches also.

Sounds like the life hahaha

You post an awful lot of great posts here RB. Let us just agree to disagree on this comment.

Is this when they do the IOC drug testing?

Unless the Olympics are in North America, the NHL shouldn't be involved. Its a travel nightmare to get to Sochi. South Korea will be another nightmare. The NHL is shutting the league down for 2-3 weeks. They receive zero financial benefit. The Americans and Canadians were too cheap to spend $1.2M to insure the players. NHL teams have billions of dollars invested in these players. The NHL and NHLPA have discussed the return of the World Cup of hockey. They sponsor the event played mostly in NHL builldings. The money goes into the NHL pot. Not the IOC pot.

Team Canada management is mad at Giroux for skipping the camp. Giroux decided to stay in Philly to rehab his injury. The Flyers suggested Giroux skip the camp.
