The NHL has gotta stop the BS after clean hits

Well as long as I can remember guys have been attacked and forced to fight after violent hits. All the way back to Gretzky days. I was born in 85 so I can’t speak to anything pre 1990 ish. The 90’s and 2000’s were far more violent than now. That’s undeniable. The league is way more regulated in regards to fighting rules. Fighting is way down. Violent hits are way down too. The game has less fighting now than ever. People who are complaining about this obviously want football/basketball fighting rules. I didn’t realize so many fans want fighting removed from the game. Fun suckers.

If you don’t believe me pop a Rock em sock em vhs into your vcr and have a gander.

You'll see lots of fighting, because that was what Cherry was all about. But you will also see a ton of hits that are NOT immediately followed by fights, because your recollection of when fights happened in games back then is obviously cloudy.

This has been a peeve of mine for years now. It's hockey. Hitting is going to occur. It's ridiculous how many good clean hits have to be answered for because the other team immediately jumps the player that made the hit.

Refs need to stop that foolishness, but usually just send both guys to the box. It's stupid that many times a player that makes a good hit gets a matching penalty for being jumped.

Just an example of what I’m talkin about- Kurashev gets caught clean, gets up, and gets 2 free rabbit punches on Krebs, who already got jumped by Bertuzzi. It’s hockey, stop being wusses, hit happens. I’d argue for a 1 game sussy for any sissy who jumps a guy while play is ongoing. You wanna fight, square up, but this stuff is just stupid.

I think if you attack a guy after a clean hit, 2 minute penalty on top of anything else should be given out. Hate that a guy has to fight when he throws a clean hit.

I was thinking about this, but I assume the league doesn't want to stuff 5 guys into the box after a line brawl and then figure out how to address a potential 10 on 10. Even more hilarious if it turns into a 10 on 10 shoved into the box/ejections and other stuff.

The 90's definitely didn't have guys getting fought for clean hits.

It only seems like it's more often now because this level of hit was the norm in the 90's and usually wouldn't have attracted much if any retaliation. It's the amount of massive hits that has changed not the response.

Absolutely wrong. Just look at this vid of Konstantinov during the 90's rocking star players like Forsberg and Selanne. After his big hits, they all keep playing since there was no penalty. The only time there's a scrum afterwards is iif the hit is after a whistle.

Depending on the NHL to make a good decision is like depending on govt to spend wisely.

That's more on the players union though,not the league. If the PA made a stink about it, things would change. But they'll never do that and take money away from their members. It's all political BS.

As others have said, it used to be after a clean hit, you accepted that he got you, and you'd spend the rest of the game trying to get him back the next time. And this isn't about not knowing whether or not the hit was clean. You'll find plenty of examples of mic'd up players admitting even in the heat of the moment that the hit was clean, but still demanding the fight.

Except the guy who laid the perfectly clean hit ended up in the penalty box, so I guess I'll quibble with that aspect. He basically got jumped. What was he supposed to do - just get punched in the face and do nothing about it?

Coming from a Blackhawks fan, I hated that reaction mostly because the hit was clean, the Blackhawks were down a goal with 5 minutes left, and now 2 of those remaining 5 minutes will be played shorthanded.

One problem is when a guy does injury someone with a penalized hit AND YOU DONT JUST JUMP HIM RIGHT AWAY .. the guy can then turn down fights and be a chicken and try and bait you into taking 2 mins

I watched the entire video most of these hits were nothing, just a D-man playing the body. They'd have the exact same reaction today as they did then to these hits.
It's also clearly a video of hits in the playoff. This league is notorious for no fighting in the playoffs.

I was born in the 70's and have watched hockey my entire life. Fighting has always happened even after clean hits. You just notice it more now because of the lack of fighting in today's game.

Are you saying that if a player doesn’t wanna get jumped they shouldn’t hit dirty…or not hit at all?

That’s where the instigator rule is supposed to be used.

Exactly, this is what it was designed for. This has always been an issue in hockey, and it won't change unless they start calling that instigator rule. Even then it may not.
