You must not have read what I wrote. The coffee was hot enough to cause hundreds of injuries. McDonald's knew this and continued to serve it at that temperature, fearing that they could see a reduction in sales if people's coffee cooled off before they finished their commute. This isn't about the coffee being hot. It's about a corporation knowingly putting its customers into harm's way for profit. It's that kind of action that makes punitive damages necessary in American tort law.

I know it's really easy and probably makes you feel good to think you would never be dumb enough to burn yourself with 190F coffee carrying no warning of the dangerously high termperature, but consider that so far you haven't even grasped the facts of this case before offering your opinion.

I don't watch sports with my kids cause of the gambling ads. Giving every American access to a casino in their pocket has probably ruined multiple families. The entire thing is disgusting and shameless. Another example of a culture degrading and embracing vice in the quest for profits and cheap thrills in the place of genuine achievement.

This is by far and large the biggest and most pressing issue for hockey (and every other sport). The real problem is that once the decision was made, it’s impossible to reel it back due to financial interests and lobbying getting a stranglehold. Unfortunate, don’t have any idea of an actionable/realistic solution

That said, I'd say it's been a net negative for the support at least in terms of its influence on how the league is covered in the media and during live coverage.

People running sports gambling is like all other gambling.

People win when they get lucky, the house always wins.

It's math.

I mean, yeah the house always wins, but if you do it responsibly and with reasonable stakes for your budget, it can easily be justified as a form of entertainment. The existence of it doesn't automatically make people lose all their money, heck, I've made probably thousands of bets and I'm down, what, 150 euro? It's not a big deal, and the money was expected to be lost anyway as soon as it was deposited.

Lives destroyed, suicide etc. you're pretending that people don't have any responsibility for their own actions. They do. You can't always blame someone else for your own mistakes.

(The invasive advertizing is still an issue, though).

 After it was shown that McDonald's was well-aware their coffee being served at scalding temperatures had been causing injuries. Oh and the judge didn't award anything, the jury did. They awarded her punitive damages equal to what McDonald's made over two days in coffee sales. The judge  reduced the award.

All of this happened after the woman had to undergo surgeries to repair third (and I think fourth) degree burns in her groin area, and her family simply asked McDonald's to help with the medical bills. McDonald's responded with an offer of a few hundred dollars instead, so the family sued.

The story you are repeating is not only false, it was specifically propagandized in that way to get public support for tort reform laws which further weakened the only real way Americans can seek damages when a negligent corporation causes injury. You're quite literally spreading political propaganda meant to put more money into the pockets of wealthy executives and shareholders.

Fun fact: the car was parked. Her grandson was driving, and he pulled into a parking spot so she could add her cream and sugar. She wasn't recklessly driving with a hot coffee between her legs. They were trying to be responsible.

It really is amazing how media can skew the truth. I heard about this when it happened and like many thought it was crazy. Then, my friend's dad who was an attorney explained the REAL story (as you summarized) yet people still want to believe the narrative that someone got paid for spilling a drink on themselves.

I just take objection to the sports books and league always deserving the upper hand. If they want to offer odds in their favor and benefit from people’s addiction they should have to live with circumstances that go against them like if a player tells his family he’ll get a penalty in the first period. Don’t offer the odds if you won’t let people win without crying about it.

I played around with the online sports betting for about a month. Won a few bucks and just cashed out. I do find the constant gambling ads and sponsorships annoying. I find the constant announcing on in-game odds annoying. But, I find all such advertisements annoying.

It's so bizarre because in most cases it's not like they get any benefit in doing so. It's often actually the opposite.

It's one thing for someone representing the corporation to keep the spin going, but I'm always amazed at people's reluctance to look at the facts and sit in a grey area if necessary, even if it means they have to change their initial opinion. But they'd rather live in black and white.
