You think Giroux would even entertain the idea of coming back to play for Torts? He would laugh his ass off at the idea, especially after the way it ended here.

And yeah, you gotta love the fact that they wanted to make a big splash in UFA this summer but made that extremely difficult by re-signing a total scrub defensemen due to sunken-cost fallacy.
It was also widely believed on here that Giroux and Couturier would never re-sign here after the Ristolainen trade. Couturier signed an extension and Giroux wanted to be guaranteed his job back when he got traded.

The thing is, reducing goals against is the only thing they can do. They don’t have the talent to decide they want to fill up the the other team’s net, nor the means to get it. Even if they wanted to.
Which is fine and all if this was just a one year thing but it’s not. They could have easily spouted some platitudes in this PC or last year but they just haven’t which shows that side of the game doesn’t even cross their mind.

This is a continuation of a long approach. Bringing in a coach famous for pushing a defensive style is just another phase of that.

I’ll be honest, I liked what I heard from Tortorella during this PC.

Is that getting me excited for the season? No.

Do I think he’s going to do what he says? No.

Do I have to give him the benefit of the doubt? Nope.

He and the organization need to prove themselves before they’re worthy of even an inkling of optimism.

As per usual every thing that came out of Chuck’s mouth was awful.

He did the same shit when he started with Columbus, then he drove Dubois and Wennberg out of town and almost did the same to Laine before he was fired.
In fairness, Laine isn't exactly known for effort in the Dzone and Torts does demand that.

One thing he did do was play Gagner often on the 4th line, but then also on the PP. So he isn't against skill on the 4th line. Gagner had 50 pts that year....the year after being awful with us.

Torts impressed me in that intro conference. Maybe he’s evolved a bit since his last coaching gig. Maybe a little more grounded with age? I feel better about him now than I did the moment I heard we hired him.

I mean they basically have one thing they can do, and he mentioned it explicitly - improve the power play. That’s where he’s putting his decision-making capital into. What does our goal differential/scored look like if our power play is 14th instead of 31st?

I recall Tortorella bringing that up because he recognizes he is lacking in that area when it comes to coaching.

I don’t recall Fletcher stating that was one of the things he was looking for in a coach.

Other than the irony of him saying he hates the use of buzz words and phrases like "culture" and then spouts off about being "hard to play against" etc, I'm curious what people actually disagree with that he said?
I'm still a little skeptical and we'll see if old habits die hard but it sounds like time away from the game has changed his perspective. Whats wrong with letting players be creative in the Ozone and trusting their offensive vision as long as they are responsible away from the puck? Isn't that what people have been wanting around here?

But when you are a team who's best chance of having a star, is your goalie AND are devoid of skill, having a coach preach defense is a good thing.

In the end, he could have hired a great coach who is creative offensively. But we would suck due to lack of skill and shit mgt. And I think that would be more frustrating as a fan....wasting the coach. We have already wasted the players and mgt is garbage, so another waste...big deal.

As you said, Torts aligns to what they already do/think.

It’s a not a lie because they have the means to attach a first round pick to JVR and voila.
Why would you give up a 1st pick just to get rid of JVR? He stinks but he could score 20 goals for a cap floor team, esp. if you eat part of his salary.

Not really. It just ensures you never have a chance to capitalize on that goaltending and win.
