Carol Kaye was in the Crew and made so many Good Vibrations

Carol and Campbell

Absolutely. No expert but what a trailblazer she was.

You might exclaim, Wow -- and you absolutely should exclaim Wow -- when considering the great Carol King, or, for example, the many girl groups of the early sixties. How about being a *female studio musician, a bass player, no less, at the time?*

Impressive.

Realize the "sexist" crap Kaye must have encountered. And yet, in the documentary, from the Crew itself I sense acceptance from musicians to musician, as long as you can play. And Carol Kaye could play.

I can't find the documentary on YouTube anymore, though I'm sure you can,

Not all 10 episodes are available on YouTube, but if interested, the 1995 PBS documentary series Rock & Roll is a finely crafted labor of love,

Featuring mellifluous narration from actor Liev Schreiber, and with notable exceptions (probably couldn't secure the rights), all the right bells are rung.

Begin with the beginning, Episode One, "Renegades," then on to "In the Groove,"

If you love the lore, as I do, you'll be stylin',

Meh. I know I'm going to sound like the stereotypical "I listened to them before anyone else did" music snob (which really, I'm not. Or, maybe sometimes. Well, most of the time.), but I much prefer the Steve Lillywhite years. His body of work, with U2 and others, just speaks to me. Not that I hate The Joshua Tree, it's one of the single most important albums of the last 50 years. However, I find it telling that when the album first came out, I put Red Hill Mining Town on a loop (isn't Side 2, Song 1 of most albums always excellent?), for it was and still is my favorite U2 song. I only found out later that it was the only song on The Joshua Tree produced by (you guessed it) Steve Lillywhite.
I think it's rare for anyone to absolutely love any artist's complete body of work, and preferring a certain period of their career is as true of visual art as much as music. It was for me, the rawness of the Lillywhite albums that initially drew me to them. But Achtung Baby is, I think, their masterpiece and what they did on the Zoo TV tour supporting it in 1992 was also beyond groundbreaking (even if some of it was initiated by Depeche Mode). They're doing this in the fall, which is really a logical extension of Zoo TV:

I got GA on the floor for night two and am headed to Vegas with my friends from high school, with whom I first saw them in 1984. Bunch of old farts relieving their salad days. Both us and the band! And Bono may be the oldest looking 63-year-old on the planet, for that matter. He's as haggard as 40-year-old Keith Richards.

Sounds like a plan. Enjoy yourselves and be careful with that GA. I hope it isn't "festival seating," if you take my meaning.

As for Keith -- who is a jerk, but a lovable one -- he and the roaches will rule the post apocalypse with aplomb.

Bank.

Speaking of women bass players

Great Molly and Billy performance.

Cool thing is both Esperanza and Molly went to Berklee.

So did I, as a voice major -- wish I had done MP&E -- but I could not tough out Harmony 1-4. Transferred to NU. Bachelor's, English; Masters, Journalism.

"Speaking of woman bass players,"

the great Gail Ann Dorsey,

Not because of the bass here. Because this is one of my absolute favorite Bowie songs. Heading toward 60 ans in November, it speaks to me.

Inspired by Eartha KItt's autobiography of the same name. Leave it to David.

Running an errand yesterday and I decided to stop for an ice cream cone. Stepping down into the parking lot from the granite stairs, stepped on a rock, rolled my foot and broke a bone in my leg and foot. Wanted a cone ended up with a split. Them's the breaks.

Fell right on the cone and wore it to the ER. " And all the time your worried about the pain that's gonna' fall on you"

"The day destroys the night the night divides the day"" sitting around waiting in the ER

Sorry to hear. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery. Glad to see you're keeping your wits about you!

I finally got tickets for his July concert in Tampa. Pit-tickets, spent a little more than I wanted but it's always a great concert.

Could use a couple of these for our blueline corps

"Tell me how can I roll when the wheels won't go"

These days I guess they call this Americana we just called it two of the best songwriters ever

One of the top 5 Black Sabbath records of all time. Sometimes erroneously labeled as an Iommi solo project nabbed by Warner Brothers to fulfill Black Sabbath's remaining contract with the label, The Seventh Star is one of the best albums ever made by the band and it was fronted by arguably one of the band's top three singers of all time in ex-Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes. Unfortunately for Glenn, he got sly wrapped by the production manager following an argument after Hughes got intoxicated one night and it caused blood to drip down his throat and mess up his vocal chords to where he had an infamous performance at the Meadowlands where he basically couldn't sing to save himself. Thus, to salvage the tour, Tony and Geoff Nicholls had Glenn kicked to the curb behind his back and brought in Ray Gillen of Badlands fame. Still one of the biggest what ifs in the band's history given how good Hughes was, and still is, as a singer.

Love me some Heart. Ann and Nancy.

Great stuff. They could rock as hard as any of the boys, if not harder.

Think of how difficult it was for them back then. Think of their original label's initial publicity campaign (sic).

A sentimental favorite,
