My problem is the "why" factor. Why did a director of his stature do this? Why is this necessary? I don't normally ask if a film is necessary, but a remake usually begs that question. It's not like he's surpassed the original.

If Spielberg is planning a massive career shift to start doing musicals then that would be interesting, but hopefully it would be original content going forward.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Felt unnecessary. Guessing it was just a childhood favorite of his and an itch he wanted to scratch. Would much prefer he stick to original content.

Updated tiered ranking of the 2022 Oscar Best Picture nominees i've seen.

1 - Drive My Car (all-around excellent)

2 - Don't Look Up (great satire but not everything landed)

3 - Nightmare Alley (loved the 1st half then it fell apart)
4 - West Side Story (well crafted but unnecessary)
5 - The Power of the Dog (boring with strong acting)

Hoping to watch Dune and Coda over the next week or so.

Sondheim actually didn’t like the original movie that much. He felt it wasn’t cinematic and was too theatrical.

I don’t care much either way.

Yeah I am bummed I missed that in the theater. Just had a hard time lining a babysitter up for that one.

However, I do have a quality projector and a 100" screen with a badass home theater system in my basement, so i'll be watching it there at least.
Having watched in IMAX theater and then on HBO max and with a soso projector and not a great Soundsystem, it was MUCH better in the theater.

It was still a very good adaptation.

I think you should watch it until you love it
Shrug. Felt like 2+ hours just happened. I just didn't get any "message" out of the movie. A somewhat morally deficient character did shady stuff and was still morally deficient at films end.

I mean, no country for old men (same year I think?) also didn't really have a "takeaway", but I found it more entertaining of a movie.

I still haven’t seen this movie and I keep meaning to. I know I’m outside the timeframe to ask not to spoil it but please don’t

I love both movies. 2007 was really a great year for movies. 'The Assassination of Jesse James...' came out the same year.

Three of my all time favorite movies all in one year.

I saw CODA and it reminded me of Hallmark Channel movie. Surprised it was nominated let alone won.

I'll get around to it eventually. My son is in the "let's watch the same three movies over and over again" stage so it can be difficult to throw something new in there. Right now it is the Sandlot, Encanto, and Moana. Can't really complain at the moment. For a while it was Cars 1-3 which are all good flicks in their own right, but not over and over again for what felt like an eternity.

My daughter is currently huge on Tangled which is a weak movie and series.

Get your spud in on Bluey though. Good stuff.

Linklater has a new rotoscope film called Apollo 10.5.

I would watch it, but a reviewer likened it to Wonder Years so that's never happening now.

My daughter is warming up to the "color swords." Progress on the SW front.
I have 2 daughters, my 11yo is more fashion/girly ect. My 14yo loves strategy board games, LOtR, StarWars and Marvel...all of which I like. They both liked Spaceballs though.

Neither like sports though.

You never know what you are going to get.
