The most painful Olympic hockey moments of your country?

!) losing in 1998 in nagano easily number 1 as we lost in a skill competition where their shot hit the post and went in, and ours hit the post and stayed out. Even then we were missing our best 3 scorers going in, in Lemieux, kariya and sakic who got injured in qf's. if we had them, it would have been 3 out of 4 best on best gold medals.

2) world cup in 96. losing to the upstart americans was really painful in the best of 3. If felt like at the time they might really rival Canada for hockey supremacy.

3) world juniors, when we were down like 5 goals to the Russians in the semi's and we came back to make it a 1 goal game and had the tying shot on our stick and couldn't tie it up

4) world juniors. tie between losing to Carlson's ot goal in buffalo and Fleury's up the gut pass to Sullivan I think?

Turin didn't hurt as much as it was evident we sucked. How do we leave Crosby and staal at home and take bertuzzi, redden, foote, McCabe, on the big ice?

And that's it folks, Canada has won everything else of importance since 1972 basically

To be fair, Jagr also hit the post and it stayed out.

Easy one: Belarus, 2002. I didn't watch or cared for hockey 5 years after that one... (Yes, I sort of missed that Torino gold 2006... )

I'd just watched the olympic final in turin, was yelling to the a friend close the ****ing tv. And then I see Teppo Numminen giving an interview in tears, commentator saying "This is a huge win this silver", Numminen just barely gets the word "yeah" out of his mouth.

The second worst trauma that will never heal is the beating that the US gave us in the semis. It did went away and I was rooting for them at the finals, and am again if they make it and we don't

It still ****ing hurts.

2002 QF against Russia. Czech team had arguably their strongest team ever but in QF we met Russians with Hasek... ugh I meam Khabibulin in their net with his best performance in his career.

That was probably most painful... then there are performance in Vancouver, team selection plus coaching in Sochi, awful semifinal in Torino

For Slovakia:

Olympics
2006 - losing to the Czechs in the QF after having a perfect record in the early stages of the tourney.

2010 - the way the team lost the bronze medal to Finland in the last period.

And the last two games at the 2004 IHWC, ugh.

For me it was the bronze medal game in Vancouver, and secondly the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Slovakia had to play in the preliminary round and couldn't form the team from the NHL players, which was awful because if we qualified we could have formed a very competitive team back then.

Pretty much verbatim for me....

1. 2010. Seeing Parise tie it up, You felt the Americans had the momentum. Of course, it just had to be Crosby that beat us.

2. 2002, losing on home ice.

3. Nagano. I was stoked to see NHLers for the first time, and as a Hawks fan I wanted to watch Roenick (even though he was on the Yotes then) and Amonte. On top of it all, I was in grade school at the time, taped the QF against the Czech (remember VCRs?) and one of my classmates ruined the outcome.

I don't really remember the Turin games. Maybe it's because the U.S. and Canada sucked, maybe it's because I still hadn't full gotten back into hockey after the lockout.

If the U.S. were to lose today, it would be worse than 2010. IMO this is the best team the Americans have fielded, and they're obviously on a roll. And this game won't be played on Canadian soil.

Don't really remember that too much, but at least that one was made a bit better by what followed a few months laters. Also it's tough to say now what would have been if all of our players could have played back then.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I am likely repeating the same ones for Canada. But to me, the most painful Olympic moments goes like this:

Bronze: '92 Albertville - Canada should have beaten the Unified Team in the Gold Medal Game. The team was one of the best Canada had sent during the non-NHL years (I really hate when people refer to this as amateurs, the amateur rule was removed in 1977. These were paid pros.) and should have won that tournament.

Silver: '98 Nagano - The loss to the Czechs was painful. However, Gretzky sitting on the bench, may or may not have been the difference. What I remember about that game is how Patrick Roy seemingly disappeared in the shootout.

Gold: '94 Lillehammer - It is bad enough losing in a shootout for Gold, but then to have it memorialized on a stamp in Sweden as one of their top Olympic moments just rubs salt in the wound so much more.

HM: '88 Calgary - Having Sean Burke in net and a few other NHL players who were holding out on the team and finishing 4th at home was painful. I only have vague recollections of that tournament and Olympics in general.

1. 1998 Nagano - very painful to watch the loss to a deserving Czech team after tying it up late. Epic showdown between Roy and Hasek. Gretzky with his head down on the bench. We knew it was his last kick at the can for international hockey.

2. 2002 SLC - round-robin loss to Sweden. We were blown out in that game and it was humbling.

3. 2006 Torino - I never really got into this team so I wasn't all that disappointed for some reason. They were so flat they didn't really deserve to win so it wasn't all that disappointing. That game against Russia was a well-deserved win by Ovie and Co.

HM: Losing to the US in 2010 Vancouver Olympics round-robin. It wasn't quite as disappointing because they'd lost in 2002 and still won the Gold - so I wasn't as concerned as I was back then.

I can't really remember the Olympic hockey before the NHLers went.

I can remember Forsberg scoring a big goal and Nedved suiting up for Canada, and that's about it. Was Sean Burke in net at one point? It was always such a hodge podge of guys.

Doesn't matter if you win it all :towel:

For me it is the 1996 World Cup and the 1998 Olympics.

The 1996 World Cup was one of those tournaments where your heart sank. The combination of Gretzky, Messier and Coffey never lost. It was weird seeing them lose. Gretzky always seemed to take these losses hard. I remember after the loss in 1996 and Bob Cole comments on seeing Gretzky slumping his head on Coffey's shoulder and saying: "You wonder if we'll ever see these two together again." We didn't.

1998 stung as well. Again with the iconic picture of Gretzky fighting tears on the bench. I remember being scared for the future of Canadian hockey at that point. Two straight best on best tournaments lost? I didn't like that. I remember any time I had a bad day after 1998 I always said to myself: "If only Canada had won gold I'd be a bit happier today." It really did make that much of an impact which is why when people say "its just a game" it really isn't. Not when your heart is into it.

I was just sad with these two losses. Just sad. Almost like I felt crying. I've been very mad after losses (let's not bring up 2006 or World Junior collapses) but with those two it was almost like a part of me lost a limb.

2002 fixed all that though didn't it.;)
