This photo is famous to posters of a certain generation .....

Quick backstory: 1956 Cup semi-finals, Wings lead Leafs 2-0. In game 2, Howe cleanly checked Tod Sloan, breaking the latter's shoulder.

Prior to game 3 at MLG, an angry Leafs' fan called several local papers to issue a death threat against Howe and Lindsay -- "don't worry about those two, I'm going to shoot them."

The Wings took game 3 anyway, stretched to overtime. While making his exit from the ice at the end of the game, Lindsay shouldered his stick like a rifle, skated around the perimeter and pointed it up at the crowd, firing mock bullets.

This is a beauty..... Ragulin not only doesnt look impressed he looks to me more than capable of totally destroying Esposito... and..... I wish he had of. TC went "dirty" on these guys, out of shape, out-Coached & out-played, stooping to the lowest common denominators in trying to slow down & stop the Russians who, in being highly disciplined & focused were not about to be baited into taking dumb retaliatory Penalties. Fighting just not part of their game, nor of the European game. Had it been and given the 10mnths of barracks confined training these guys went through, every one of them actual Soldiers, had they been so inclined make no mistake, fighting permitted, guys like Ragulin fully trained in the Pugilistic Arts & Sciences they would have hospitalized a considerable number of Team Canadas' players. Wrecking Machines. It would not matter a whit that Canadians came from hardscrabble blue collar backgrounds & that fighting was a mandatory part of the game if faced with a professionally, militarily trained fighting force like that & who could beat you any way you wanted to play it.

You're quite right Killion, about Ragulin's ability to lay waste to Esposito. But then again, Espo was more than capable of going down without assistance ....

And then he wondered why Vancouver fans booed him and the team. .

I remember seeing this in newspapers at the time: Dave "Cement Head" Semenko, the Oilers enforcer with 1279 PIMs in just 596 games with Edmonton, boxes the Muhammad Ali. I recall either Ali or his trainer/manager told Dave before the match to make a show of it instead of going all out.

I suddenly realized that a photo I've seen pop up in the media in each of the last four straight decades hasn't been posted yet: When 6'1 200 lbs. Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury took the shoe off of a fan and chased him up and beat him with it! It almost makes up for the travesty he was as an NHL GM.

That's not really how it happened, but the 'myth' is probably better...

Do you think messier is drinking coors banquet here?

 ..... not sure if serious?.... but thats an old "stubby" bottle of whatever. Coors in the US came in a long neck bottle back in the day and when introduced in Canada same thing; long neck bottle. Im assuming that photo with Gary Coleman taken in the States.

.....:laugh::laugh: ... ok.... were playin "Beer Hunter" are we?.... alrighty then..... Did Coors make "Banquet" in the early 80's & was it available in Alberta?.... I think not..... and... from what little I can see of the label of that beer in Marks hand....

Apparently these were discontinued around 1984 (note the "farewell edition" on the Labatt's) so that puts a no-later-than date on the photo. If this was indeed during the peak of Diff'rent Strokes and after an Oilers playoff series clincher in Edmonton, my guesses are either 4/20/1983 or 4/22/1984. Pretty sure Messier would have remembered the 1984 Cup clinching game as more than "some playoff series". They lost in the first round in '82 and '81 seems a tad early for Gary Coleman to draw... that kind of reaction.

Nice detective work fellas :thumbu:

Looks like the Molson Canadian is the winner, fittingly.

.... well not so fast not so fast there Sami..... could be a Molson Export. :D ... for sure a Molson product I should think as they have been a long-time sponsor of the NHL & of various clubs... merged with Coors some years back, Coors owning I believe 30% of the Montreal Canadiens with the Molsons owning 70%. Molson/Coors a League Sponsor in the US, also Team Sponsors in Denver, Detroit & elsewhere in the US.

I feel like maybe I need to blow off work and dive deep into all the Molson products. Just to be thorough and make sure.

^^^ There's a thread for non-famous photos like that.

None of the last dozen posts are on TOPIC.

This thread has become derailed.

It was 80 years ago that the body of Howie Morenz was brought into the Forum for a funeral ceremony. This photo was in the newspaper back then and referenced in several books since, and most recently by NHL.com this year. One would think there would be a closer photo, and there probably are, but this one probably is famous because it shows the enormity of the support, the full house of attendance.

.... Thanks for your "opinion" on this matter and yes, I concur however, decided to let them slide a bit as what might be "Classic / Notable" to we here in North America would not necessarily be so to our European & Russian Members who will have their own "Classic's"...... others arguably could "become classic's"...... and as I'm in charge of "Acquisitions" here at the hf Boards HOH Galleries.......... there we be VanIsle.... Enjoy.
