Hurry back Morgs, your detractors are ridiculous. Omg, he has flaws, the horror!
The only flaws I see are people thinking it is a good idea to part with a top tier 220+ lbs defenseman. When (ok if to the skeptics) the leafs go deep, playoff hockey will grind some of the smaller guys down. Team needs some bigboys with some mass to endure it.

we don't miss him defensively, that much is pretty clear. offensively though we're definitely suffering, especially with half the lineup not really likely to produce much in playoff hockey.

Good point... many are wondering why the Leafs aren't near the top of the league in scoring again with our firepower... one reason is better overall defensive awareness for sure. But having our best offensive dman that usually plays 23 minutes a night is probably a pretty large part of it too.

The winning streak proves, Reilly doesnt matter. There is no streak without Marner or Matthews. Reilly pinches too much, doesnt give a bleep about his own zone, doesnt want to win board battles, is a very soft dman who seems to want to play forward. He cant run a pp1 either. U mention playoff hockey, Reilly isnt a playoff type of dman, obsessed with pinching doesnt work in the playoffs. The Leafs dont need offense from the backend, they need dmen who play the d zone. Brodie is the best all round dman on the team.

It is common for any fans base who are not used to winning to think certain player is not important when they are winning. True contenders fanbase don’t, just look at TB, I don’t think they ever say Stammer is not needed after he missed pretty much the whole playoffs while the team won the Cup.

To think we don’t need Reilly is really dumb. What Muzzin, Reilly and Gio gave us is having someone to clear the front of the net on each pair.

I really don’t care what Timmins and Sandin are doing, if everyone is healthy, the top 6 for the playoffs should be Reilly-Lilly, Muz-TJ, and Gio-Benn.

On another note, I noticed Muz in gym clothes in the locker room when Willie gave the belt to Sammy at the end of last game. Is he training with the team?

Morgan Rielly is now probably the most underrated player on our team. Great player, so glad he's a Maple Leaf and hopefully he will finish his career as a Maple Leaf.
Reilly is the most over rated dman in the NHL. Watch the PP1 , Reilly's lack of quick decisions and lack of deception when those 2 things are most important on the PP, he fails at both. He has 4 all stars all over the ice with him, he brings them down, being very indecisive predictable and scared too shoot(Kaberle also wouldnt shoot if only to mix it up).

Obviously a trade is off the table at this point and his contract is fair value or better on paper, the time to think about life without him was before the contract was signed. The main concern for me is that if his skating takes a hit as he ages it'll impact him the most out of any of our D and his contract will prevent us from being able to afford a viable replacement. I don't think we would have been that much worse off on-ice if he walked and was replaced with a Brodie level placeholder on a 5x4, but no sense worrying about that now.

Hoping he fits the new system like a glove when he's healthy, he brings a lot of value in the room and steps up his game in the playoffs. If the new D set up can keep him to ~20 sheltered minutes where he can dominate offensively I doubt anyone will be complaining about him. Hopefully more tailored usage does him some good and we get to see a new level out of him.

It's funny how almost all of the all-knowing pretend that Rielly's critics base this criticism on the winning streak, when few do. Criticism of his defensive play was also very common before, now the critics feel vindicated and say so. And it stands out more because there is little else to criticize right now.

10-0-1 without the prodigal son.

But hey, apparently he will be back skating imminently so you will have your messiah back giving up odd man rushes soon enough. Just relax and enjoy the consecutive point streak rather than being so “sick” of people’s opinions about him. If you like the guy, post stats to backup why he is good but remember people also have the right to post stats that show his flaws. Not everyone thinks highly of him and I am in the boat of people who would ship him out. Its my opinion.

Good thread. I've seen it around the board and just don't have the time to point out the flaws in the logic.

How quickly the fall from grace on this board at times. From the straight up love boner we had for him this summer signing the extension where he left money on the table, showing true loyalty, love and passion to the blue and white to a few short months later the teams playing well without him and off with his head.

Fans are fickle, it's embarrassing. God forbid we have good players who actually want to stay here, embrace the pressure and play with their heart and soul.

Rielly is defensively challenged. You don’t really want this guy on the ice in the final minutes with a one goal lead. His offence is mediocre, most of his points are secondary assists. He is not good on the PP and his shot is brutal. This is not the first time the Leafs have excelled while he has been injured. I would definitely offer this guy in a package for a top 6 winger and a 3/4 physical defender. Sandin can easily replace him on the PP. Yes he is loyal and a team player but the team has always had trouble scoring in the playoffs. We can’t expect any goals from our 3rd and 4th line in the playoffs. Bunting and whomever is on the second line are not top 6 forwards, especially in the playoffs. Need to find a way to add an offensively gifted winger to play on the top or second line.
It’s amazing how many don’t see this. Boggles the mind really. When he gets back watch how many odd man rushes we need to defend with him on the ice. I knew we’d be better without him 12-1 but I didn’t expect us to be this much better! It’s obvious who the problem was. Give Sandin #1 honours and watch us finally get over the hump.

Removing one guy doesn't solve a problem.
