There is a lot of truth in your statement. I also think that Stepan is just better equipped to deal with his shortcomings and/ or any disappointments that come his way.
He seems much more mature than Del Zotto is at this point in their respective careers.

That I will definitely agree with. But to say that MDZ won't ever turn it around is a bit presumptuous. For what it's worth, I have my money on his putting it all together and becoming a consistent player who makes good decisions...eventually. Whether that's soon, or in ten years...that's my bigger concern.

I wonder if Philly would be open to a Del Zotto-Simmonds swap.

Del Zotto for Teddy Purcell :yo:

I've actually thought of that myself...I like Purcell a lot, but he's more of a playmaker than a finisher, and I think this team needs a top-6 finisher desperately.

He is big, talented, and right handed, though. I'd definitely inquire.

Well he has a very good shot and a quick as hell release which the Rangers could use for sure

WTF?

Shortened season, I see no eastern teams...

I though MDZ was a stud for you guys. Is this all based on what he did (or didn't) do this season or has this been festering for a couple of seasons now?

Confidence and consistency are his biggest problems

It's based on the fact that much of this board is incredibly sensationalist.

He isn't a disaster. Nor was Stepan equal in trade value to Jussi Jokinen, then Malkin a few months later.

They played MDZ on the right side after Stralman got hurt and he struggled a bit.

People here overreact.

Resign Clowe and you have the inner track on a motivated Teddy. But the one question I have about Teddy is with a guy like Stamkos or St.Louis, is he going to put up the points?

Any way we can get Stamkos???? :naughty:

'Our D is now set for years to come"
"MDZ is a solid #4 defenseman"

"Trade Del Zotto for picks"

I think that the Rangers brass will be huddling and trying to make a decision on this.

I don't know. I am not a hockey expert. As a simple observer, I think that MDZ could be really good in a couple of years.
He could also be really good as a trade component really soon.

Who knows. Should he be traded, or should he be considered as a diamond in the rough, whose sheer talent will be revealed in a couple of seasons more?

I say trade him, if the trade gets the Rangers what they need. Only if the trade is right.

No hes rough hes stinks just get rid off him well we can.,

he was bad this year and has looked very shaky at times plus he cant hit the net. that said, this board wanted to trade stepan for a 3rd round pick while we still had a chance to get "decent value" for this slow 3rd line center at best. about 40 games later stepan finished the season with more points than rick nash. the lesson here is dont listed to the rangers board

Way to generalize. That was ONE, count it, ONE person.

Stepan is 10000X smarter than Del Zotto. He has hockey sense, whereas Del Zotto has barely any. There are serious flaws to his game, which he hasn't fixed in his 4th NHL year. Still can't hit the net. Still gets lost in the defensive zone. Still can't make good, quick decisions on the point. Still can't hit anything other than shins or glass on his shots. These are all serious concerns. Add in his sub-par skating for an offensive defenseman, and this is what you get.

Look at Keith, Karlsson, Subban, Doughty, Shattenkirk, Letang. What do these all have in common? They can FLY on skates. Del Zotto? Not so much.

Shattenkirk: 23 points
Doughty: 22 points
DZ: 21 points.
Put down the pipe son.

Nope, it was a whole collection of posters on this board who were developing a pack mentality against Stepan, who was snakebitten.

Just read through the Stepan thread in late January, just an absolute atrocity and bashfest.

Same thing happening in this thread.

I guess if you're expecting MDZ to be a #1 defender and one of the top point producers in the league, yeah, you'll probably continue to be swaddled with disappointment and misjudgement of talent.

Shattenkirk: 23 points
Doughty: 22 points
DZ: 21 points.
Put down the pipe son.

Let's take a bigger sample size, shall we?
Regular season:

Doughty: 0.505 PPG
Shattenkirk: .542 PPG
DZ: 0.44 PPG

Playoffs:
Doughty: 0.64 PPG
Shattenkirk: .266 PPG (albeit in 15 games, and he's the weakest OFD on that list)
DZ: .375 PPG

So yeah. But hey, as long as you can prove that 2/6 of the OFD I named are not better (which they are), then hey, let's let DZ "figure things out" in his 5th year.

I've watched these defensemen play. They can run a powerplay. They can hit the net. Shouldn't an offensive defenseman be able to do these things?

Michael Del Zotto spent an average of 2:54 per game on the powerplay this season, and had 8 points to show for it.

Glad you two get it...

The guy who said Stepan was 1000x smarter than MDZ is just being the favorite thing in Kovalev's locker (must be over 30 to understand that one).

Me saying that Stepan has greater hockey IQ than Del Zotto is trolling?

Lol. How about, making an observation. And that wa obviously a hyperbole.

Oh. And I'm under 30. I'm sure many young posters got the reference.

Then you are not watching carefully.
Total missed shots
DZ ranked 24th this season at 41 missed shots, just ahead of Shattenkirk's 40 missed shots and behind the following:
PietrAngelo: 57
Buff: 56
Doughty: 55
PK Subban: 42

One more nugget.
Career shot %
Shattenkirk: 6.2
Doughty: 7.1
DZ: 7.2

My point is DZ is not as bad as you guys make him out to be, he is just the favorite whipping boy at the moment.
