I'll let Matt Cooke walk, I'll blow almost $4 mil on a defenseman we don't need instead...I don't care anymore

- GoingForIt2014

$3.375m isn't almost 4 million and the revolving door that was Letang's partner last year indicated we did need a guy like Scuderi. Solidifying the top 4 D helps more than a bottom 6 guy like Cooke, imo.

I will miss Cookie though. He was everything I hoped he'd be and more when we brought him in to replace Ruutu.

I can't believe people are still whining about signing Scuderi. The guy makes $1m more than Niskanen and he's 10x the player. Talk about upgrading for the money once we dump Nisky somewhere.

I think this thread is good. Great guy for us over a long period of time. His stellar PK is something I'll miss. His 5 on 5 play was really diminishing. He missed Staal in the worst way.

Thank you, Cooke. That was a tremendous amount of years of great value.

Amen, brother. But we have other threads talking about that. :) Let's give Cooke the props and move to the other threads.

I'm more sad to see Cooke go than I was to see Jordan go

Edit: don't get me wrong, not to say Cooke is better or more valuable. What he brought is different and I'm just more disappointed to see him walk, as opposed to Jordan being moved for valuable stuff.

Cookie was the only player who showed up every playoff game this year. Knew what you were getting with him.

Wow froods. That blew my mind. I knew they were all gone, but time flies. I loved that 3rd line. :( I will be happy if all 3 have successful careers. They gave it their all here.

Wow, Nick Kypreos got that one wrong. He was right that the Pen's would not sign him. But wrong on the reason. Said that Cooke would sign somewhere for big bucks. And Pen's simply could not afford him.

Cooke really signed for a modest amount. And considering the other deals we did, the term was fine as well.

Our management just didn't want him here any longer. Because his deal was not extreme in the least.

I was being sarcastic. I'm over the moon excited about Scuds being back. Was hoping that Cooke would re-sign, but I understand that there wasn't enough money left in the Shero piggybank to get it done.

We're all going to look back in 10 years and be amazed at how blessed we were to have these three on our THIRD line.

Hell, we can look back now and see how much this meant to our team.

By comparison, our current third line is ?-Sutter-?

Ugh...

Sure, that was a great 3rd line, esp. during the Cup run, but the only player who we were "blessed" to be able to play in a 3rd line role was Staal. Cooke and Kennedy are career 3rd liners who deliver varying degrees of effectiveness from season-to-season...

Thank you, Cooke. Loved the energy and forechecking you brought every game. Our third lines looks so soft. I hope Shero can trade jussi and Nisky to get a gritty third line and free up some money

This is true, but the chemistry that they generated together made them greater than the sum of their parts, is where I was going with that.

Staalzy was the only one that was playing somewhere other than where he clearly should have been, but the three of them together were a nightmare for any team we faced on a given night.

Pretty big Cookie fan and I hope he does well in Minny. I'm not sure how the rest of this off season plays out but the Pens are looking really soft.

And I can hear this song playing in the background while viewing this pic.

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye

I was never a big fan but I'll give props where due: He changed his game to keep his job and was always a great grinder. All the best to him.

Well, no surprise Kypper got something wrong. The guy is entertaining at times, but he's a tool and inaccurate a lot, too. He's a mere small step up from Glen Healey.

But Cooke did get a pretty significant pay raise on this deal. Based on a lot of the different spreadsheets/permutations of the line-up I did (with Iginla, without, ditto for Brooks or Nisky, etc.), I just couldn't make a scenario work to keep Cooke at anything above the $1.8 that he's currently making to $2million, which is fair and about as far as I would go as a pay increase, especially after Dupuis getting such a big one. If Dupers got less or we cut bait with another player, then perhaps we could have met that deal. But...

I think this could indicate a good sign here: that Shero still is eyeing an upgrade at forward by adding another top-9 player. I didn't want to lose Cooke per se, and I don't mind losing Kennedy, and even losing Iginla stings after what we gave up. But as long as we do add another top-9 forward, I won't have any issues with this at all. If we can move out Jokinen (the fall-back option as I suspect), AND a Dman like Nisky or even Orpik, we would then have some pretty significant cap space to use.

Also, I think the 3rd year was a deal breaker for us, too, which does amount to a fairly substantial monetary discrepancy between what the Pens were likely offering vs Minny. We may not have much in the way of high-end talented forwards in the pipeline, but we do have guys (i.e. Archibald & Rust), who could be very good 3rd liners within 2-3 years. Giving Cooke a little more for 2 years, or giving him a 3rd year to extend him for what he's making now are two things I would have seriously considered. But $2.5 for 3 years of Cooke, as much as I love him: I'd have to agree with Shero on this one with letting him go.

But yes, he certainly should be appreciated. Good thread, and good luck in Minny.

Just bad timing.
Key players getting raises, cap going down.
If the possibilty was there, they probably would've resigned him.

I'll miss him and will back up Wild fans now when they get attacked for having "the dirtiest hockey player evAR!":sarcasm:

Sigh...

That was Staal's 2 on 1 goal in game 6 to make it 1-0. That line was almost cartoonishly dominant that game.

****ing salary cap. The thing created specifically for teams like the Pens (at the time) is now the thing screwing us over now that the Penguins brand is practically a licence to print money.

TK had his warts, but he and Cookie were heart and soul guys in the playoffs. We need more of that, not less, yet here we are.
