HF Habs: The Martin St Louis Thread

JK gonna have fun with Smarty Bonaparte on Wed, :baghead: seriously, does anyone really want to see this team in the playoffs ? please spare us the Agita.:deadhorse
Of course, I do want to see them in playoffs, but it will be tough. We scored 14 goals in last 10 games vs. Carolina. I want it for the young players to gain more experience. If MSL makes stupid decisions that will cost them game or two does not really matter, it will be a learning lesson for all.

Feels like the lobbing strategy is some weird moneyball smartest guy in the room shit where they saw lobs had a high percentage of regaining possession and failed to realize that it's because most teams aren't predictable about lobbing the puck on 90% of breakouts
Sometimes it's to try to get out of the zone when they are hemmed in (and fail to clear because they don't lob it far enough most of the time). But they also use it to try to spring a guy who's cheating for some sort of breakaway quite a bit. And it rarely work, because the player has zero speed and support getting into the ozone.

The whole thing is like their back pass on the PP: telegraphed and disjointed. There is nothing natural in the execution.

The team used to do a lot more clean zones exits and entries in the early MSL days. Now, it's pretty much gone outside of the rookies.

Even though it's a seemingly small decision, to not put Demidov in the shootout, it's pretty emblematic of the issues with MSL.

He just simply can't recognize in-game trends and capitalize on them. There are multiple reasons why Demidov would've been the ideal shooter in the shootout yesterday, not just because he had a good game:

1. The other goalie probably doesn't have a read on him! The goalie is going in blind. That's already an incredibly advantage in a shootout.

2. The shootout is a skills competition. You put your highest skilled players/stick-handlers and, even though it was Demidov's first game, he is clearly already one of our most skilled forwards.

3. You have to build on momentum that your best players have created. You can energize the player by energizing the crowd by putting Demidov in. Same goes for Hutson, who was also one of the only players last night creating any offense.

It's been proven time and time again you can't 4D chess your way through the shootout. You just put your best players and hope for the best.

Would’ve been something to watch this fanbase if Jon Cooper was the coach w his All Star team not delivering year after year for 7 seasons….

The lob is dogshit I much rather them exit the zone in a group and dump it in that the stupid lob play and stretch passes by dmen who can't pass.

Last night we had some of the worst breakout execution of the entire year

Let's put it this way..

If Paul Maurice became available, Hughes needs to run to him with a barrel of money and sign him for a decade. It will be like another Demidov in the lineup.

Comparison...good luck finding SMarty on that list...

yeah man, i'd much rather have ranked coaches from that list Peter Laviolette, John Tortorella, or Lindy Ruff

great list

Not to say you are wrong but the roster is so bad I don’t know how you can point fingers at MSL without acknowledging that no other coach could do much better or differently.
I long maintained that the roster isn't as bad and with better system we'd be in a playoffs long ago. I mean, you're telling me this roster, man to man, is worse than Ottawa's? Or NJs? Come on. This coach trying to make them play the way this team isn't built to play. Or cannot sustain playing it effectively for a long time. That is aside from poor in-game management, play time management and flat out terrible roster choices.

They won’t fire him so that’s out of the question.

One solution is to hire a veteran Associate Coach that can take care of the defensive scheme.

The other solution is to take away his pets. Savard has no business being an NHLer anymore. Matheson can get shot into space as well. Don’t give him the shit veterans he insists on coddling.

At this point fingers need to start pointing in Hughes' direction. St louis is what he is. Nothing anyone, other than Hughes, can do about it.

St Louis is not a problem , just nervous nelly fans are.
Montreal is 6 -2-2 in the last 10 games and yet
too many Idiot fans out there can't control their emotions.
At the start of the season this team was not expected to be in the playoffs, that is a fact (we are still in a REBUILD)
Here we are fighting for a playoff spot 4pts up with 1 game left, why is that a coaching problem?
We got the second youngest team in the NHL , and St Louis has done a damn fine job
to get these guys to game 81 with a chance to get into the playoffs.

  • SO WHAT NEXT ? If Habs get in and get beat out in round 1 vs Capitals ,will St Louis need to be fired cause we didn't win the Stanley Cup ?

I could always say he’s a terrible game manager, but at least he’s a good motivator. However I don’t see a motivated team in the most important week of their season.

exactly, the " what can any coach do with this roster" excuse is getting fu&#ing ridiculous,if its such a poor roster why would Hughes keep them together when Suzuki asked him to ?

Results of Poll (Keep or FIre MSL?)

about 87%: Keep
about 13%: Fire

(So the Poll seems to have been deleted...) The results of the poll about MSL support is about 87%. Maybe it would go down to 80% if it was not a public poll. The vast majority want MSL back with a very vocal and non-negligible minority that thinks he should go.

The Habs have been playing like shit for, at the very least, 6 games now, no matter what the record say. Playing like shit when it matters most is certainly not a ringing endorsement for the one that is supposedly in charge.

That’s what I find alarming, yet enthusiasm (and it wasn’t there in abundance last night) can only take you so far.

Habs spent most of the night chasing, like an old Edsel sputtering out of gas.

Lost the majority of stick battles but promoted more stick battles with The Lob and atrocious passing.

Hoping they got The Worst out of their system and are much better Thursday night.

They have to be to get a point or two vs Canes.
