Well,
At least people aren't blaming Montembault anymore.
He played badly quite a few times this year, costing us wins on some pretty weak goals allowed. Yet Montembeault also stole a couple of wins from the jaws of defeat for us, and stood on his head during some very crucial games for us in December and January, when we turned our season around.
Looking at it more or less loosely, I think that the good balances-out the bad in Montembeault's case so we can say that he's basically been playing like an average NHL starter this year.
He is no great boon to the team, but it is also not his fault that his teammates aren't playing well right now.
But let's not kid ourselves, some teams would kill for league-average goaltending so there is some amount of value to Montembeault on the Canadiens' part.
Back to the coaching discussion, I said it before and I'll say it again; MSL is a good motivator and player's coach to help run your young team through the motions as it undergoes a rebuild, but MSL plain isn't "the guy you're gonna win with".
The comparison is a bit flimsy, and well, stark, but if we look at things from a different angle, MSL's role with our team can be likened to the Hockey-coach equivalent to a "fluffer", in that what he is doing now will benefit the person that comes after he is gone.
MSL's gonna teach our players to be accountable as pros, and believe in themselves so they kinda sorta maximize their potential. But he sucks too much strategically and in game-management right now for me to have any hope of MSL being anything more than a stopgap of a coach.
At least that's how I see things.
