HF Habs: The Martin St Louis Thread

Like I said in the post-game thread, Marty seems like a great players coach and good for development/skills. A really smart guy. But let's face it...it's becoming more and more clear that he's a horrendous in-game manager. That's worrisome. He never seems to have an answer. Never able to adjust to the situation that is unfolding in real time.

We talk about players progressing/regressing. But is it time to have an uncomfortable conversation about the fact MSL isn't progressing in terms of his in-game coaching?

Feels like the lobbing strategy is some weird moneyball smartest guy in the room shit where they saw lobs had a high percentage of regaining possession and failed to realize that it's because most teams aren't predictable about lobbing the puck on 90% of breakouts

The habs spend way too much time in their own end.

Most of them get tagged and look like they are being catapulted into the boards upon on contact and the book has been out on the habs for the whole year, they just play through it.

One thing I notice, though, is how awful the team in general is at catching pucks off the rim arounds. I saw Demidov doing it and he's miles ahead of everyone on the team in that aspect and he's 19. The inability to break out and the initial action that allows the other team to establish the forecheck is often the result of this.

It takes skill, but it's not normal that pretty much the whole team is awful at it. Suzuki is the only decent player at it.

Where is Adam Nicholas? This is the sort of technical thing they should be practicing.

Its been a problem allllll yr

Dont have the players or the coaches to currently fix it. The breakdowns tonight were glorious. So many open Hawks in the slot

Hope this isn't MSL trying to save face about no Demidov in shootout decision...own your bad choices dude.

Well,

At least people aren't blaming Montembault anymore.

He played badly quite a few times this year, costing us wins on some pretty weak goals allowed. Yet Montembeault also stole a couple of wins from the jaws of defeat for us, and stood on his head during some very crucial games for us in December and January, when we turned our season around.

Looking at it more or less loosely, I think that the good balances-out the bad in Montembeault's case so we can say that he's basically been playing like an average NHL starter this year.

He is no great boon to the team, but it is also not his fault that his teammates aren't playing well right now.

But let's not kid ourselves, some teams would kill for league-average goaltending so there is some amount of value to Montembeault on the Canadiens' part.

Back to the coaching discussion, I said it before and I'll say it again; MSL is a good motivator and player's coach to help run your young team through the motions as it undergoes a rebuild, but MSL plain isn't "the guy you're gonna win with".

The comparison is a bit flimsy, and well, stark, but if we look at things from a different angle, MSL's role with our team can be likened to the Hockey-coach equivalent to a "fluffer", in that what he is doing now will benefit the person that comes after he is gone.

MSL's gonna teach our players to be accountable as pros, and believe in themselves so they kinda sorta maximize their potential. But he sucks too much strategically and in game-management right now for me to have any hope of MSL being anything more than a stopgap of a coach.

At least that's how I see things.

Marty is horrible at adjusting in-game, and yet the habs are the best comeback team in the league? Something doesn't make sense here.

In his post game presser, Demidov said he was jet lagged when he was in Toronto, and that even today, 2 days later, he felt tired in the 3rd period because of the jet lag.

As expected, people who were calling Marty another Rottenberg for not playing Demidov in that Toronto game are looking like idiots.

In over his head

And nope

Not a short joke

Guy looks completely lost the last week or so. The Pezetta infatuation after benching him for 50 games make you wonder if MSL is concussed
How can he be, i swear MSL thinks he himself is the savior and prophet
These three posts tie the issue I have with SMarty...

This is the NHL level and making simple, unforced, no brainer mistakes have consequences.

Just one goal could make a massive difference and he can't see Pezz won't provide that nor Laine on the shoot-out. But he thinks he knows more then anyone on the planet...which allows no room for self reflection and improve decision making.

Let's put it this way..

If Paul Maurice became available, Hughes needs to run to him with a barrel of money and sign him for a decade. It will be like another Demidov in the lineup.

Comparison...good luck finding SMarty on that list...

JK gonna have fun with Smarty Bonaparte on Wed, :baghead: seriously, does anyone really want to see this team in the playoffs ? please spare us the Agita.:deadhorse
