HF Habs: The Martin St Louis Thread

They are not (losses in EDM CGY and SEA) but winning is great as a fan. However 3 goals in 15 shots is not sustainable. Monty likely won t hold that Rhythm either.
They played a great first period, were all over the place but after that they were not very good.
How many shots per chance were Fla limited to?

I predict MSL will coach another full year and then gets canned after a losing streak mid-season of 2026-2027.
I don't. Marty St Louis was in complete control of the game last evening. What I do think will happen is Marty becomes more comfortable in his skin and more confident and will be willing to take on an experienced assistant.
I remember there being much talk when Marty was hired that this would be the "show me" season. Even if he wasn't already extended he would definitely get a new contract based on the team's performance the second half of this season.

When MSL was hired the love in began but three years in and this team needs a better coaching staff.

We want to see progression in the players but why not with the coaching staff?

No D zone structure, horribad PP and PK and it ain’t getting better.

If they insist on keeping MSL, they need to hire a veteran assistant.

IMO, it’s time to cut MSL loose and bring in a veteran staff that can teach these guys how to play with and without the puck.
Hmmmm…not aging very well

I was a doubter at the beginning of the season, team was a f***ing mess defensively. Even our most positionally sound players were lost. But he and the staff improved a lot of things. And that quote, you can see the drive that got him where he is today.

Best coach we've had in a very long time. IMO one of Hughes more inspired moves since becoming GM and is an integral catalyst to everything we're trying to build.

The detractors imo can't see the forest for the trees.

Roger Grillo has played a HUGE role behind the scenes …. the tactical improvements are a lot of his influence PK, PP, Matheson playing shutdown D role - big believer in top end PMD being shutdown vs offensive roles.

Grillo was the one directed USA Hockey follow that shutdown path with Jakob Slavin, while coaches felt Slavin should be an offensive Dman because of his size + skating back in 2012

MSL got a lot of slack for hiring Grillo as his advisor…

Credit due, where credit is due............this is bang on.

I have had issues with MSL but as the team develops, and matures, so does MSL and his coaching experiences and decisions. Is he perfect, of course not.............the Grillo hire early in the year did not look right at all, but the team after Remembrance Day when they beat the Sabres 7-5 seemed to turn a corner.

Since then which was 6 weeks into the season, they have been a playoff team.......one thing for certain, Marty wants to win, and win badly.
Kudos for hiring Grillo........it has paid off.

Is he going to stop being so stubborn and switch up the lines? The 4th line has been awful and the 2nd line just doesn’t work with two floaters on it. Try switching Heineman and Roy.
I'd play Heineman in place of Roy, but I have a suspicion they are playing out the year with Roy to use him in a trade this summer. hopefully he plays great - up his value.

Roy has 2 goals in his last 3 games. Heineman has done nothing in the 14 games since he came back from his injury. Why would they demote the player with the most goals the last 3 games for the player who's done the least?

Both lines (especially the 4th) look disjointed to me. I think a speedy and tenacious player like Heineman to pair with Newhook, would be great for Laine 5v5. Roy can add talent to the 4th line since Evans and Armia are not doing anything.

I wouldn’t mess with the lines. The team has been pretty hot lately and scoring goals. I don’t agree they the 4th has been bad. Anderson and Gallagher are doing their part and for the first time ever, Dvorak looks good

We have lost a few in a row but I don’t think you need to change things up every time it’s an L. I’d say just leave it as is.

I really like Heineman. But he hasn’t been the same since coming back. And Roy has two goals in three games…

I hate how Marty’s favourites never sit , never get called out , even after brutal performances.
There are some in game decisions that I don't like from MSL, and I'm rarely pleased by his lines combos, but one thing I like about him is that it seems as if he's ready to forgive errors if the player is putting all he has to give on the ice. It's going to be good for the team even after he's long gone, and it's certainly a good thing compared to what we've seen with the Habs coaches we've seen in the last 20 years

Because his favorites are high quality players who make the most meaningful contributions despite gaffs - this is precisely what you want from a level-headed and sane coach.

Useless plugs like Xhekaj get their minutes reduced and are benched when they err.

Heavy minute eaters with warts who are pivotal to the team like Matheson do not.

We want to actually win hockey games, after all - not moral victories for egalitarianism.

Well he has never sat or punished MM, Savard, Dvorak, Armia etc, but Arbs makes a mistake, and poooof he's out rest of the game.

Due to a lack of alternatives, the Vets you mention play a big role in our team’s dynamic on and off the ice. Arber Xhekaj does not.

MSL can’t bench Matheson, his workhorse, but he can give Xhekaj’s meagre minutes to other players.
