A lot of that was Dave Tippett hockey though and they had a prime OEL. :sarcasm: The Canucks might have gotten better results employing the trap. Certainly, I think Tippett is a much better coach than Green at getting regular season results with a bad roster. Tippett is like AV in his first season here.

I don't mean to take anything away from Arizona. They actually made moves to improve the team during those years such as trading a 1st for Stepan. But they are an example of a team that failed to build around their core. Of course, missing on a few high picks can make all the difference (just look at Canucks in 2014 and 2016).

There are of course mitigating factors, but arguing that OEL is due for a bounce back because he was on a 'bad' Arizona team when the Canucks have been a similar level of bad is an odd take, as is reducing it down to "there were a bunch of shitty teams in their division" because it ignores the prior years as well.

Like, yeah, I'm sure Tippett trying to employ mistake free defensive hockey played a part, but is it much better than whatever Green is doing? Like I said: similarly bad.

One playoff appearance in 9 years..and now starting another rebuild..In a few years, they could conceivably be worse than Buffalo, in regards to futility.

They have some good players Chychrun, Keller..but those prime years could be squandered.

I don't disagree and of course I wasn't the one saying OEL is due for a bounce back because he was on a bad team. But there are variables and events that may have impacted his game the past few years starting with the death of his mother at the start of 16-17. There's also his relationship with Tocchet who pretty much every Coyotes fan say was not a good relationship and OEL being a poor fit with his system. But ya who knows. We have OEL now so I'm hoping for the best. Maybe OEL will be different playing for Tocchet's best friend.

Good thing we jumped on the Pearson signing early...
The Pearson signing sticks with me for how obviously foolish it was, and how embarrassing Benning's justification for it was. It's just such a clear example of the fact that value does not factor into management's thinking whatsoever, and they are desperately scrambling for stability, be that in success or in mediocrity.

Not really, they're teams going in two completely different directions...but if you have a penchant for crapping on everything they do..and being negative..you might have point.
It was more just trying to point out that basically no comparisons between the Coyotes and the Canucks paint the Canucks in a very positive light, and therefore are not good at all for use in trying to explain why OEL moving from Arizona to Vancouver would be such a seismic shift in his hockey environment

I don't know what Benning said about it but I can basically picture him saying something like "I asked his agent how much he thought Tanner would get as a UFA and then gave him that."

I wasnt even comparing the Canucks and Coyotes.?.....obviously, for you... it was too big of lame 'gotcha' to pass up...congrats.

The Coyotes could conceivably spend 12-13 years with only one trip to the post season to show for it. (cue your response that the Canucks are even worse off..)

Honestly fair point, I thought the discussion of Tippett above was in relation to OEL's situation as opposed to the current success or lack thereof of the Coyotes franchise.

I mean I don't think the Canucks are going to be out of the playoffs for the foreseeable future, so you win this round you sly dog. I just think that we've topped ourselves out as a fringe team for the foreseeable future due to the anchor in cap we've recently added, and for me that's not good enough. I'd prefer a modicum of ambition, rather than having our goal being "not as incompetent and embarrassing as last year".

Future results will tell the entire story..One of us will be completely wrong...Stay tuned.

So what makes you think this version of "Wait and See!!!!!!!" is going to be any different from the past 5 times you made it and were wrong. Spoiler alert, that when things tend to look bad it shouldn't be a surprise when they go bad, and no amount of hand waving about waiting for the results before making judgements will change that. Nothing this regime has done inspires confidence that they actually care about long term success.

Depends on what you consider long term. They aren't thinking 5-10 years down the road if that's what you're suggesting. It's more like the next 1-3 years.

Connecting the dots one plausible theory is that the players were pissed when all of Markstrom, Tanev and Toffoli were just let go (when they could've retained Tanev and Toffoli fairly easily imo without re-signing Virtanen, signing Holtby or trading for Schmidt). So the Pearson signing was a doubling down, or a reactive move (ie uh oh we don't want to piss off the guys again, uh re-sign this popular UFA no matter what) to a stupid, self-inflicted injury in the first place. I've said this before but last year's offseason may have done more long-lasting damage to this team than even the horrific 2016 offseason. Benning still could've gone after his precious OEL and used the 9th for a better RHD than Tucker Poolman lol.

This is exactly what happened.

They stupidly let good popular veterans leave, lost the room and took tons of criticism, and then when a bad popular veteran came up for renewal they thought they were correcting their previous mistake rather than doubling it.

I agree with all of this. It's depressing that most of the moves this guy makes are entirely logical and reasonable, so long as you accept that he's a clown trying desperately to course-correct for his past mistakes. Whenever I see someone justifying the OEL trade as "well he had to, the young guys would want to leave otherwise without major moves!", it is just so frustrating because the frustration of those players is also his fault and a result of his past decisions. It all comes back to the original sin of having a dumbdumb running a professional sports franchise, either making his own decisions or having his strings pulled by the owner, whichever deflection argument is being used that day.

I predicted the Canucks to be a playoff team the last 2 seasons (and last year I predicted them to take a step back)...If you're going to whinge about me..at least get your facts straight.
