Spoilers about the fate of a couple of characters from season 2.
I hope they'll put much more effort into Jesse's character than the game did. I'm not sure what even the point of his character was, other than the fact that Dina had to be prenant. I could not give two shits when he died.
Who said ‘wrong’?
Youre certainly entitled to your opinion. But discounting probably 100s of thousands if not millions that love it and arent gamers is a swing and a miss IMO.
And yeah, you know nothing about us either. And frankly I dont have to understand diddley squat.
well your opinion doesnt really matter (I mean it does but not towards what Im talking about) . I hope you enjoy the overall story but those who know and have loved it have the right to criticized it.
if you never played the game there's no reason for the things that bother the fanbase to bother you. but we shall see. a certain something happens. it made ALOT of people rage quit
I'll be watching and likely buying season two on 4K as well. but what I see so far I dont like too much. and mostly it's Bella. she was okay and acceptable as young Ellie but I just dont see her fitting into older Ellie role very well.
only thing I really hope is this Abby doesn't get bullied like the original. it's really unfair how people treat Bella as well even if she looks NOTHING like Ellie

he was just their friend, I thought Jesse was fine for his purpose. its kinda like some of the other characters in Abby's crew like Jordan and I forget the red head girls name.
I'll never understand why people care if an actor doesn't look like the character from the source material. Just incredibly silly to me. And to answer your question, no it wouldn't be easy to find an actor who is talented and looks just like the character. It would be incredibly hard in fact. There's probably less than a dozen English speaking girls in the world who are Bella's age and can act as well as her.
it's not creepy to want a beloved franchise to atleast cast actors that look like the characters like literally everything out there
what if they casted Danny DeVito as Wolverine for Deadpool and Wolverine? no big deal?
yeah Im sure that would have gone over real well.
even Tom Cruise as Reacher got backlash but not Alan Ritchson, I wonder why...... people care about these things and care more and more depending how much they love the franchise. considering most of you have never played the game I really dont give a shit if u like Bella or not.

Danny DeVito would be a closer representation of comic book Wolverine than Jackman, yet we all love Jackman as Wolverine because he played it well. That's what matters.
The Cruise Reacher movies were entertaining, but casting a 5'7" 150 lbs guy to play a character known for his overwhelming size is different than casting an actor you don't think is pretty enough.
I played the first one, not the second, yet thought Bella did great and I loved the series, as did my wife. It seems like it was a success for HBO too so it seems to have worked out.

only because of the height but still if they put him as Wolverine over Hugh Jackman everyone would likely not be happy. We love Jackman because he played the role very well yes and he's been the only Wolverine.
I thought she was bad but acceptable. her looks were pretty awful for Ellie. I just don't understand how she got that role. and it's not because she's not pretty enough to play as Ellie, she also was never sexualized in the game, so the whole not pretty enough argument makes no sense. she just looks nothing even remotely close to Ellie, closer to Buzz Lightyear than Ellie
she might be a slightly better miscast than John Wayne as Genghis Khan
As has been mentioned, a defining aspect of the Reacher character in the books is his giant size.
Ellie's appearance has absolutely no bearing on her character. I don't think it's even ever addressed once in the games. That's the important difference.

I dont understand why they would address her looks for her character in the game anyways, that makes no sense.
fact is she just isnt a good Ellie, she doesn't look remotely like ellie, doesn't act like her, doesn't have her mannerisms, doesn't even talk like her, she's not even the same character.
either was Bill in episode 3. (it may have been a good episode) but they changed everything about his character too, a guy that trusts no one and so stuck in his ways that he drives Frank to abandon him out of hatred but getting bitten in the process and then committing suicide, they dont go out together in a crappy love story, Bill continues on by him self.
one change I did like was them making Sam deaf, I dunno it just fit well. but all of that was rushed too.
It's pretty funny to me how you can't win with adaptations. Some get roasted for being too different. Some get roasted for being too similar.
I agree that if a character's appearance isn't an important aspect of the character, then it really doesn't matter. I thought Bella played the role well in her own way.
To go further, Game of Thrones had some pretty sharp differences with its casting. All of Daenerys, Jon, Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, even Rickon were supposed to be a lot younger than the actors they hired. In the books, you were supposed to be cognizant of how f***ed up it was that awful things happened to teenagers and children. Hell the only time they let a child be truly in the fold of warfare and medieval politics was, ironically, Bella Ramsey's character. Hell Tyrion was supposed to be depicted as far more grotesque than the scarring Dinklage's Tyrion ended up with. These were important character details that were altered to be more palatable to a wider television viewing audience, and the story functioned just fine for the most part.
Bella was just fine as Ellie. What a lame thing to waste brainpower on.
but she looks nothing like the character. and she really wasn't that good to be completely honest and what it's just not possible to find people who are great actors AND look like the characters?
even Pedro as Joel which I'm fine with really doesn't look that much like Joel, cant even grow a full beard lol and his acting was fine but his line delivery was rushed imo.
or maybe the show just had a higher tempo I dunno but if you compared the HBO show to the game the word for word parts u will see how inferior it is
will be interesting to see if people will stick around or rage quit it like the game though, Ill be watching even if I think it's going to be a pile of crap
I'd bet this is at least a 3 season show and that the big moment from Pt. 2 won't happen until episode 5 of the 7 (only 7!?) episode season. They know it'll be controversial and don't want viewership to plummet after the first 2-3 episodes. These short episodes seasons suck.

I watched the show before I played the games. Then I played the games and watched the show again...
The looks were one thing but she could have done a better job portraying game-Ellie. Pascal as Joel was mostly very good IMO and this girl cast as Abby looks spot on so far. I know there's a hissy going on in this thread about expectations of adaptations and what not, but this particular game series was special because it's much, MUCH, more narrative driven than traditional AAA videogames.
Ramsay's acting as Ellie was off by a noticeable amount and personally it was distracting. Seems to me she was cast because she played a spunky little kid on another HBO show and they just figured she'd be the best fit. Had they tried I'm sure they could've found someone better.

I don't think he needs that much more attention tbh. He's the friend that exists to get killed. He's a redshirt on the Starship
There's already so much non-action happening in season 1 and assumed even less action happening in season 2 I don't want a whole narrative time sink into a tertiary character. I hope i'm wrong about S2 because it may be too boring for me to finish. S1 was a slog even before I played the game and knew nothing about the characters.
I fear...
1) Season 2 is going to focus way too much on Ellie and her girlfriend's relationship. In the game it was great, it was there in the background for the most part except in some key moments and it really shined.
2) The lack of action is just going to exacerbate the "subverting expectations" of how morality is a matter of perspective and Abbey, her close friends, and the Fireflys really aren't the bad guys (snore)
Not too excited for this season pending some insane reviews. I'll probably just replay the games when it airs instead and have a way better time.

I dunno I think by episode 3 it happens. one episode to show whats Ellies been up to, and another for Abby and their crew looking for them. boom.
I think this show is going to get alot of bashlash continued about the miscast of Ellie but also for whats coming, I honestly believe that if Pedro wasnt casted in this show. it wouldnt have had such a big following on HBO.
and I agree with what u said. ur basically spot on and Im glad you played the game afterwords. it really is a masterpiece

You quite literally just proved my point further. It's about the character not looking attractive enough to you to represent the video game counterpart.

I wouldn't say there's a hissy going on here and if there is it's certainly coming more from the gamers or at least one gamer. Once again, HBO isn't catering this game to the people who played the game especially since apparently most of them hated the 2nd game. They're trying to make the best show possible whether it's faithful to the source material or not. The majority of the viewers haven't even played the game. You're obviously welcome to your opinion and I'm welcome to disagree with it. This game being far more narrative than most is a fair point which makes your argument a bit less silly to me.
