You are wrong on both accounts. Samberg has always been ahead of Heinola on the depth chart. At one point it was relatively close but by now it the gap is huge. No doubt Pionk has a lot of worts but Heinola hasn’t proven to be any where near yet. I’ve been hoping he comes somewhere close to Pionk as he could replace his roster spot at a fraction of the cost even if he was a slight downgrade at this point. Eventually I’d expect an Heinola to become a similar player to Pionk. Nice offensive chops but a liability in his own end.

Was that necessarily merit based or age, contract, org style preference based?

Snerg made the most of his chance this year but Heinola did outperform him every season they played together for the Moose. I think the Jets just had a role for Snerg and not one for Heinola with Morrissey, Pionk and Schmidt being the offensive dmen already on the team.

He's done well in sheltered min and most of the increase in his underlying numbers came later in the year after he'd received sufficient NHL reps to adapt to the league, something Heinola hasn't been given a chance to do.

It's perhaps not as egregious as when the Jets placed Chiarot ahead of Morrissey on the depth chart but it's a similar mistake in focusing development on the larger less talented D-man. Samberg is a lot better that Chiarot was but it's also worth keeping in mind that Heinola has been more effective in the AHL than Morrissey was. (The again, even in the AHL Chiarot was used ahead of Morrissey which limited Morrissey's opportunities. Heinola has been the clear #1 D for the Moose for a few years now, so greater opportunity probably plays a big part of why Heinola has been more successful than Morrissey at the same age)
I don’t really want to argue about Heinola as I’m hopeful for the kid. But at some point he will need to look good in his NHL opportunities. My guess is more will come along but it is up to him to take advantage of them. As of now he really hasn’t.

Some of the dreamers here used to say give Niku a chance, Niku is just what the Jets need, he‘s great on the Moose, Jets are wasting his talent in the AHL…..

except Niku proved himself he wasn’t good enough for the NHL, his brief time in Montreal affirmed it…

At the NHL level Samberg has proven himself and his underlying numbers support that he has been very effective. Heinola has struggled with his opportunities to date. Offensively there are flashes but in his own end he has been very bad. That in itself limits opportunities. Pionk is who he is and probably close to what Heinola develops into. But as of now Heinola is statistically worse at both ends of the ice.

Heinola seemed to have been rated higher in the ahl. However, At this point in their careers samberg has been better where it matters most in the nhl. Given that he will play more. Idk why fans think this is unusual or some conspiracy.

I do think heinola should be better than niku. Niku majority was pp points in the ahl that had everyone on here thinking he might be something, including me. I think heinola is more well rounded.

I hope so but I fear that's not enough

Maybe $4M is more reasonable, but the guy is a great 3D for any club in the NHL almost. We got him frickin cheap for how good he is.
Players of his style don't usually command lots. Sigenthaler is another one that's similar. Ottawa had him at his best value though but I think 3-4M I'd consider fair for Demelo.

His salary this season will be 3.5m. If he signed a 2 year deal, I'd go as high as 4m.
