Confirmed with Link: The Jakob Chychrun Thread (update: 3/25/25 | signs 8-year, $72M extension)

Unfortunately they’ve got 4 really good LDs into the future and only one RD post-Carlson.

There is a famous saying "you can never have too many good Defenseman." I'm less familiar with the saying "you can in fact have too many good left handed defenseman". They'll work it out, either by moving a guy to the right or by trading a lefty for a righty.

Who says they have 'em? Maybe it's just a flat $9M per.
It's not impossible, but find a long-term deal (signed within the past decade) without them. They're a big deal for the player but barely hurt the team, so it makes sense to have them.

Re Hutson. I’m still guessing he’ll be in DC in the Fall of 2027. That’s one more year at BU, and one year in Hershey. At that point, Sandin will have 2 years left. Maybe you move him. Still curious to see how Sandin holds up in the playoffs.

Also, Fever’s deal is up after next season. I’ve always liked Fever. But maybe he gets moved to bring in a physical, defensive righty. Maybe Iorio could be that guy? How are the Hershey guys viewing him these days?

If Hutson is the star we hope, it will be a good problem to have, and the FO will flip someone to figure it out.

Also on this, the better this org does in general, the less worried I am about college prospects not signing. Any guy who wants to be a top player with a great franchise should want to be here, even if the path to the ice is a little more crowded than signing with a bottom-feeder or tweener.

Speaking of - what is the deal with Chesley? I honestly forget he exists at times. But another RD possibility. TvR’s deal is also up next year.

I have absolutely zero issues with 8 years x $8m.

But if it hits 8 years x $8.25m? Hhrrrmmm.
8x$8.5m? Errrgh.
8x$8.75m? Yikes
8x$8.8m? Oof
8x$8.9m? *liver quivers*
8x$8.95m? Ack!
8x$8.975m? I abandon all hope for peace, love, and joy in the world
8x$9m? My brain explodes like that dude in Scanners

(P.S. Actually completely happy with this deal.)

The more I think about it, the more I believe the skate cut drove a lot of this. Cheech has had plenty of injury trouble in the past, and he was that close to being a guy the Caps couldn't reasonably risk paying for. Birds in hands and so forth.

Thought exactly the same and was typing a message here yesterday before i got distracted that i wouldnt be suprised if he signs soon after the cut. Kind of a wake up call for those 70+ millions sitting on the table. :)

Anyways. I dont love the number, but i like that its done. Letting him walk or even dragging through the playoffs was much worse option.

We get him for all of his prime years. Ideal age curve for the contract. Fingers crossed we get what we paid for! (The version 24/25)

As others, i too am a little worried with the light bulbs and stuff. The kind of stuff where he could just decide hockey is bad for humanity or something :) but ill trust the team to keep him from flying too far away.

Its good to have friends in high places.

Talks for the deal picked up steam Friday morning — after Capitals owner Ted Leonsis wore Chychrun’s jersey to Washington’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. That, too, brought a round of jokes and laughs from Chychrun’s teammates, who wondered if they’d missed a memo on the extension.

I expect Chesley to sign after his season is done (which, odds are, will be by Sunday evening, but could be mid-April). I'm not sure if he needs to play a game to burn a season of his ELC, but if so, he'll play a game at the NHL. Then he'll go to Hershey.
I believe that as Chesley would be signing as a 21 year old his ELC would not be slide-eligible and just by signing he would be burning the first year. If they didn't want to do that they would have to offer an ATO in the AHL I'm pretty sure ...
