Confirmed with Link: The Jakob Chychrun Thread (update: 3/25/25 | signs 8-year, $72M extension)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Honestly, $1m more than we all hoped.

In the grand scheme of things, and with lots of potential ELCs, this is pretty inconsequential.

That is about as aggressive as Caps have been on giving that out. That is a helluva negotiation by Andy Scott (agent).

My best guess now is that it was the NMC/trade protection that drug this out. $9M is right on. As noted before, Chychrun has seen two poorly run franchises. Caps are not that and he wanted to lock it in.

$21.25M total cash over the final years of the deal might improve their ability to move him should it be needed.

(As the cap keeps going up, I can see some times struggling to hit the floor more often.)

The clauses affect my like for the deal, but I had expected some. This is still a gamble I'm ok with.

meh. don't love it. don't hate it. there's a fair amount of talk about expansion in the next few years, so maybe this will seem a bit better in that context.
I had typed about a hypothetical expansion draft in my post moments after yours, then deleted that section.

In his UFA year he has less protection. That should help if we are sellers then.

But in all reality these players waive the NTC all the time if they want out. I dont think its a big deal. He prob never wanted to play for a team with owners like the Yotes and Sens had again.

It's not that this specific deal is that bad -- although I don't love it. But the part that I hate is that it sets a precedent that players can get full NMC, when they'd had none of those for 15 years.

I hate it, it should be half that many teams if you're going to give it out. Like, fine, you don't want to go to a bottom feeder, but you need to let the GM get the best deal for you too if we need to move on. Ted should've vetoed this after the Beal nonsense.

Especially cause as much as I like him as a player, he's a real f***ing weirdo and that shit bleeds over like with Kyrie if you let people like that have too much security.

The NMCs have been getting more and more standard. I don't like them either, but at some point, the market speaks. We'll see what the next offseason looks like with the cap going up and likely a new CBA in place. That's when we'll really know whether this is a good deal or not.

This ain't the Wiz. And like I said, we'll see what contracts look like this offseason. Might make this seem much better by comparison. But I guess I just trust this FO to make the right moves and manage the consequences as they shake out.

Those first 3 years of NMC absolutely are strategic by the agent knowing damn well there could be 1-2 expansion drafts. The potential sites they’ve thrown out aren’t exactly hockey hotbeds either (New Orleans, Houston and Atlanta again). Not that the Caps would expose him, but it still gives him peace of mind that he isn’t going anyway. Plus the dude just got married and I’m sure they’ll want to start a family soon. Uprooting a little one is never fun.

The world matures. This is market now. You can only be principaled so far. This is the highest paid player on caps beyond OV (and Backy on LTIR). This sets presedent for your top paid players. Not everyone.

Yeeesh. Chychrun's agent knew the Caps didn't want him to hit free agency, and holding the line in negotiations managed to get just about everything that could be expected. Big win for Chyc and his agent.

Step away from the ledge, brother.

JC6 is a great player, and one this team NEEDED to keep.

Getting caught up in the weeds on all the details is…..

Something that’s maybe a little under appreciated about JC6 continued presence, is that he might help extend Carlson’s career a couple more years.

Chychrun plays the 2nd most mins, and the most 5v5 mins. That’s a big load off John’s back. Especially after they ran him into the ground the past few years. JC6 (and Roy) have helped balance his mins so he’s not as overtaxed.

Hopefully that pays off for him in the playoffs.

Nice it does sound plausible.

Erik Karlsson was "unmovable" until they went out and did it, the real concern would be changing the LTIR loopholes over the course of this contract.

Injury history? Not extremely worried about it, it's not ideal but LTIR can make any year a sudden deadline changer. NMC/Limited restrictions? Probably doesn't hurt much if the team's bad early and won't hurt much when he's getting up there, because again, if he's virtually unplayable later in his contract they'll slap him on LTIR anyway.

A lot of these poor conditions kind of rely on the worst result, which is Chychrun getting hurt 10 games at a time while the Capitals suck so much ass he demands an early exit and can pick his destination. Even then... if they're that bad it probably means some other stuff didn't go great and the retool window slammed shut somehow, so you can keep him without a lot of sweat or sell for pennies on the dollar (if there's interest) and... probably still not care a lot.

I guess the real "worst case" is that he's bad, the Caps are good, and he doesn't want to leave but that also seems like a fairly small potatoes issue for the regular season. Teams like the Panthers have done just fine with guys like Ekblad falling right off the map, none of this is a big problem in a vacuum.
