The 'I called it' and 'What was I thinking' thread

Since the DJ Smith to coach Marlies thread is closed. I'd like to say I was right about this one. A nonsensical Tweet by Vishal Hussain @vishal_hussain that had Smith becoming the Marlies coach while we had a Marlies Coach that is currently playing in the AHL playoffs had an off smell to it from the start.

I believe it's because most people just follow blindly what the organization or media says. It's really as simple as that and there is nothing wrong with it either. It's a safe position to take if you don't have knowledge on the topic and Typically you would think they would be right but, well, we have terrible management and even worse media.

I guess that's why I bare my ass here and usually it's against the grain, unfortunately though...I am more often right than wrong, and it's not even close.

Add: This should never ever be happening in the real world with the level of education, money etc they all have, and are making. I'm an idiot! How am I getting this stuff right!?

-Regards

You said Bozak would finish with an average .55 PPG this year on Cam Charron's blog. How did that work out?

You were also wrong about Grabovski when you said he was back to the 50-60 point Center this season. He actually finished with only 35 points in 58 games. Which translates to a 49 point season over a full season. I reminded you he has never been a 60 point center which you claim he was.

Now I can bring up more wrongs you have posted so please do not claim you are more right then you are wrong. Some of us are sharper than that. Otherwise I will have to remind you just how often wrong you have been here.

edit: after typing this went back to add here that i apologize for the route this took ... good thread idea honestly... good attempt at breaking out of the ruts but still can't help but post the rant!

called it: N/A

WwIt: where to begin...
1) thought raycroft trade would be good
2) thought pogge would become a monster
3) thought monster (gustavson) would be a monster ...
4) thought toskala was a smart move
5) didn't like schenn for jvr move (offense wasn't the glaring need)
6) think leafs will be competitive year in, year out
7) i own signed leafs memorabilia from: schenn, sundin, kaberle, bernier, clark, johnny b, sitler, vaive and others with well over 3500 invested in a team that doesn't give a F*(% about winning for its fans
8) i drive 3 hours and spend absurd amounts of money to attend the games of a team that doesn't give a F*(% about winning for its fans
9) thought leafs would have enough sense to NOT extend a coach that made winning non-existent in the last 15 games and took the team from 3rd in conference to the 8th worst overall in the league!

Well, it's summer, the Leafs fell apart and we all hate each other again, so I thought I'd take a break from all the 'trade em all' 'fire everybody' 'Burke was the best/ Burke sucked' threads and try something different.

Since we're all hockey geniuses here, thought it would be fun to post our 'called it' moments and our 'what was I thinking' moments from last season and beyond if you like.

And try to be more creative than '18 wheeler' because I know that everybody called that ;)

Here's mine:
Called it:
Phil Kessel, more than just your average second line winger. I knew he would be something special. I know it's not earth shattering, but there was a time Leaf Nation was not so sure.

Tyler Bozak: I always said the kid was a keeper. Still think he's much more than a 3c LN seems to think he is. He's only gonna get better.

David Clarkson: I said if last summer, Clarkson as a Devil is NOT Clarkson as a Leaf.

And under WwIt?!?

Schenn for JVR: I thought this was going to be an unmitigated disaster. So glad to be wrong.

Raycroft: I really thought he was going to bounce back and be the guy here....

Called the JVR trade, he has performed exactly as I anticipated. Most complete player on the team.

Called the Jiggy trade. Good stopgap, too bad about the groin.

Called the Jeff Finger trade. oops.

Called the 2013-14 season proving the Leafs aren't ready to compete at a high level. Last years playoffs had as much to do with other teams having bad years as the Leafs getting hot at the right time.

Called Bernier making quick work of Reimer. That was pretty obvious...

PS BEST thread in months... well done.

Any predictions for 2014-15? ;)

you called the Leafs being a winning team under Carlyle, don't forget to take credit for that.

Any predictions for 2014-15? ;)

I predict Shanny will be given a heroes welcome by December. I predict Clarkson becomes the blue and white version of Shane Doan and all will quickly be forgotten. Leafs will be a scrappy, plucky pain in the toosh type of team that nobody takes lightly.

I predict Colton is done; :(

Shoulda kept my mouth shut, now were doomed :(

 The resemblance is uncanny.

Called it:

Rask for Raycroft was going to be this generation's first round pick (Scott Niedermayer) for Tom Kurvers. On that day that deal was made I was telling people that night Leaf fans would regret that trade for a decade.

That going from Wilson to Carlyle was going from really bad to worse.

John Ferguson Jr. would be an unmitigated disaster as GM.

Keeping Luke Schenn in the NHL at 18 on a terrible team was an epic mistake.

What was I thinking:

Thought we would never again hear the name Ben Scrivens, but that everybody would regret giving up Matt Frattin, who would excel in a prime spot on a team of quality players.

Thought Clarkson would, for the most part, replace McArthur's goal production, but would bring a hard nosed style of play to the team.

That Reimer was going to step in and save the season after Bernier was hurt.

Thought they were repeating the Schenn mistake with Rielly this year.

Called it:
- The David Clarkson contract would be the laughing stock of the league
- Nazem Kadri would have a sophomore slump
- Randy Carlyle would not repeat last season
- Leo Komarov will be sorely, sorely missed
- Tyler Bozak would have a great year

What was I thinking
- Joffrey Lupul would stay healthy all year and put up 65 - 70 points
- Jonathan Bernier would be our #2 goalie
- Cody Franson would solidify his status as a Top 4 defenseman
- Jake Gardiner would solidify his status as a Top 4 defensman
- Our penalty kill while regressing will stay in the Top 5 of the league

Called it:

The Leafs wouldn't roll over against the Bruins in last years first round and play them hard in a long series

What was I thinking:

That the Leafs would be better than a bubble team this season and make the playoffs convincingly
That the Leafs would make the playoffs in 2012
That the Leafs would make the playoffs in 2011
That the Leafs would make the playoffs in 2009
That the Leafs would make the playoffs in 2007
That the Leafs would make the playoffs in 2006

I called it (or Brad May did):

The Leafs would make the playoffs (in the 48 game season)

What was I thinking:

The leafs would be 7th in the East this year

Yes, that was the amazingly insightful post I was referring to.

who would have thought, right? especially when the team added a ton of character in place of the departed players who were fine for a crappy team but completely ill suited for a winning team like the Leafs that puts a premium on defensive hockey.

One would think that they wouldn't have dismantled such a powerhouse of talent.

Any other 'called it' you like to share?

Didn't "call it" on HF, but in convo's with friends I said last years team was significantly better. You can't lose Grabo, MacArthur, Komorov (huge player for us last year) and only bring in Clarkson and Bolland.

What was I thinking: Reimer is better then Bernier

What I find funny is he continually calls the 2012-2013 team coached by the same coach he is now calling a loser, a winning powerhouse team(the one that blew a 3 goal lead in game 7). I know, it makes no sense to me either.

All I know is I said years ago if Grabovski is your #2C, you are not likely going to win a cup, nevermind make the playoffs. Grabo keeps proving me right even after being bought out.

I basically have been calling out the Leafs for being the overall worst run franchise in the league with the indisputably most incompetent management since I joined here. There's never been a reason to change my avatar. I've had the same one all along.

As for what was I thinking, well, I guess I expected too much from Nonis so far in his tenure as Leafs GM.

Didnt he carry Washington to the playoffs? Or Mac in Ottawa? Both played significant roles on those powerhouses right?

Gritty character-first power forward who will hit fight score and lead by example. in the making... It's there, but he needs to put it all together.

They showed us. Really to regret losing the KGM line, it's amazing, that line had one good year, and 2 bad ones when they no longer snuck up on teams, and people think we lost the Triple Crown line or something. Some of us are old enough to remember the Sittler or Gilmour lines, missing those lines is understandable, but KGM? it's silly really to be sad over such a mediocre line.
