The trading deadline is over. Dan Girardi re-signed. Ryan Callahan was traded. Marc Staal is the next big homegrown Ranger player up for group III. The Rangers can't sit and wait until the fall to hammer out a contract with Staal. Does Staal want to stay in NY? Does he want to join his brothers in Carolina? That Carolina experiment hasn't been very good for Jordan Staal. Carolina isn't making the playoffs this season. They have made the playoffs once since winning the Cup in 2006. They made the playoffs in 2009. Does Marc want to be part of that?

Larry Brooks wrote about Staal and the captaincy today

“Glen and I were just discussing that as we were coming up here,†coach Alain Vigneault said before his team lost to the Maple Leafs 3-2 in overtime at the Garden. “We’re going to leave it with three A’s for the remainder of the year and then deal with that this summer.â€

Staal would be considered the front-runner to become captain next season if — and only if — the defenseman signs a contract extension over the summer and thus renounces pending 2015 free agency.

Indeed, the offer of the captaincy is likely to become part of the negotiations with Staal, who obviously has a pull toward Carolina, where his brothers Eric and Jordan play for the Hurricanes.

If the Rangers can't re-sign Marc this summer, then the Rangers have to move him. The Rangers front office wanted no part of losing Callahan for nothing. They can't wait until trading deadline 2015 to determine Staal's future with this franchise. They won't get anything for Staal as a rental based on the prices paid for rentals yesterday. The Rangers shouldn't wait until July or August to get around to Staal. Make Staal an offer in June. Look to move him at the draft or when the new league year begins in July. The Rangers will get more if they move Staal in the summer. The acquiring team gets him for a full season. That team has a full season to re-sign Staal.

After the departures of Dubinsky, Anisimov and now Callahan, I don't think the fanbase could survive throwing Staal into that mix.

I agree that they should at least get this done before camp next season. I'm afraid of what the second pair is going to look like without Staal on it. But if you're looking to recoup a 1st round draft pick, Staal is a good place to start.

Not even sure what a fair offer would be. Somewhat of an injury concern but really like the way he is playing. I feel like he will get paid more than G, but he does play on the second line so maybe similar to G?

He should be moved. He is a huge health risk. He already had at least one concussion again this season.

Any long-term commitment + huge injury = Rangers more screwed than they already are.

I will say that it's probably easier, though not favorable, to lose Cally at the trade deadline than it would be Staal. Losing an important Dman, when his pairing buddy Stralman already may not be back, during the season is not optimal.

Think showing Cally the door perhaps sent messages to guys like Staal and Stepan. Make draft day the sign or trade day, most value at that time, teams are throwing picks around anyway. Just stick to your deadline!

Staal needs to be signed. The core and identity of the Rangers is Lundqvist and the defense. As long as the big 3 of Girardi, McDonagh and Staal are together, the Rangers will compete though not be elite .Without Staal, I hesitate to think how mediocre this team may become.I guess Tampa will root real hard not to resign Staal.

i think he will be signed. if he really just HAS to go play with his bothers, then he's just a simple lemming. he should be doing what's right for HIS career. not fulfilling some silly stunt.
but i would think he's his own man and will do what makes sense...and i think the rangers will pony up at a somewhat team friendly rate but for a longer term and stability.

well, that's what i hope happens, at least. he's a terrific talent.

7 years 6.5m per and the captaincy.

Far to much for a guy that can't stay healthy. Should get identical to Girardi IMO. Maybe slightly more.

He's a better D-man, when on and healthy, but that is not as often as I'd like.

Agreed 1000x. This situation needs to be addressed in the summer. Will Sather learn his lesson and not dither on these things? Its a simple question. Does he want to stay here, or does he want to test free agency.

If its the latter, sign him ASAP.

If its the former, trade him in the summer when his value is higher than it would be at the deadline. Lets not go through this Callahan fiasco again.

I wonder if we could reduce the price (and to what extent) with an NMC. More cap slack would be nice.

Addendum: Is there a way to make pay (or at least cap hit) contingent on number of appearances? Perhaps something stepwise: 100% if appears 70-80 games; 90% if 60-70%; 80% below that. I'm just spitballing.

as the case with Callahan, if we get a good return for Staal (and we should no question) and he doesn't agree to a contract here, I'm ok with moving him too.

me too but with the threat of him wanting to play with his brothers I am not going to be shocked to see him dealt at the draft.

Votto - I agree. With 2015 supposedly deep, maybe the Rangers can recoup some of the draft picks we lost yesterday. McDonagh, Girardi, Klein are signed for a few years. John Moore is an RFA. Staal is a great player. There is obviously some injury concern but I could see the Rangers moving him.

Based on my years posting here, I'm going to look in to my palantír to see how this is going to play out with Staal on the board.

March-This thread---A legit thread with legit points. No Staal bashing....

Season ends-20% of the board will be pushing to trade Staal at the draft.

Mid-July-At least 2 threads about Staal needing to go. The palantír is telling me that now 35% of the board is saying Staal needs to go. Posters will say it's our next chip to trade to rebuild the farm system.

Start of camp. Staal isn't signed but rumors are he's asking for 6.5M a year. 50% of the board is outraged at the numbers. Now, every mistake and every shortcoming in Staal's game is magnified and dissected.

Thanksgiving- Staal isn't signed. Fans are now really getting on the guy. How can he ask for that much money. Who does he think he is. His numbers will not only be compared to McD and Girardi but because fans are obsessed with points, he will be compared to Karlson. "If Karlson isn't making that much money how can Staal?

January-Staal isn't signed. Now Staal's legacy is completely tarnished by the fans. Everything he did here won't matter, 65% of the board wants him traded for prospects and picks.

Trade deadline-85% of the board wants Staal traded. You can't lose him for nothing. Staal and the Rangers will be in contract negotiations. Fans will be exaggerate his eye injury to make him sound like Ray Charles on skates. "He's injury prone, concussion prone" Forgetting that Staal is a great defenseman, that won't matter to the board. They want prospects and picks.....Games from years past will be brought into play. We will hear how his minutes will be easily taken over by Skjei. Guys who don't know the difference between tangible assets and intangible assets will preach about asset management......

Anybody that has followed EVERY contract negotiation and the immatury the board shows knows my post is true.......

This is no longer an option. The Staal situation is not like the Callahan situation. Even before we knew that MSL would be coming back, we knew we could afford to move Cally. We already had Nash and MZA on the right side, and some of our top prospects are either RW's (Kristo) or can play there (Miller).

If Staal leaves, who plays 2nd pair LD? John Moore? As much as Klein has tried to cover for him, Moore is a 3rd pair guy at best at this point (and he has nights where he looks like even that's a stretch). Who do we have in the system that could possibly replace Staal?

Um. Skjei might be able to do it. In three years. He's the only LD among our top ten prospects.

Staal has this franchise by the balls. Without MDZ as a potential replacement (and yeah, yeah, I know there are four or five of you who just creamed yourself because this sentence looks like yet another opportunity for you to crap on DZ and think yourself clever--we get it. No need to copy and paste your "thoughts" again), we have exactly two top 4-capable LD defensemen in the entire system. Without first round picks, we aren't likely to get any new ones in there for a couple of years. That means that any potential replacement for Staal would have to come from FA, or come back in trade for Staal--either scenario leaves us with a downgrade at the position and (if we went the FA-route) paying just as much as we would have had to pay Staal.

We are officially INSANELY deep at RD (Girardi, Stralman, Klein, McI, Diaz) and insanely thin at LD (McD, Staal.............Moore..........um.....yeah).

Pay Staal. Pay him now. We have no choice.

Definitely sign him. And do it sooner than later. When he is rolling at 100%, I think he is the best defensive defense man on the team. The issue is, when he IS rolling at 100%. He has had some bad luck with injuries, but some of it has just been that, bad luck.

I definitely want to see him here in the long term.

I want him signed ASAP.

Also, for some reason, I don't see him asking for the moon. I think he'll be reasonable in his requests.

There is no depth on defense and he's been good this season.

He will always have value. Sign him and keep him. For now.

But I wont cry if he's traded. He's no longer a franchise defenseman. In fact, i don't think he ever was outside of a few spurts.

Gotta get it done over the summer, we don't need another Girardi/Callahan situation next year, if all goes to plan we should be making moves to make the team better at the deadline not lateral moves to avoid loosing players and changing up the team at the deadline.
