Post-Series Talk: The Florida Panthers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 (mod warning in OP)

The shot-based stats show something (but not everything). This regular season the top three teams in xGF% were Carolina, Florida, Edmonton. Dallas was 15th.

Both Florida & Edmonton have that quality of being able to take over the game when they want. They've both showed their quality in these playoffs. Carolina might be in that category or might not - I can't totally read them.

Carolina, I think, is probably the best defensive team in the league, but it definitely has lacks the offensive firepower of Edmonton/Florida. Their xGF numbers probably reflect more of an ability to limit opponents’ chances and less of an ability to manufacture their own compared to the other teams being discussed. Will they be able to break through in the playoffs and get past these teams with superior star power on offense? Time will tell.

The difference being that Florida & Tampa really are in win-now mode. The Leafs otoh (like my Rangers!) cast themselves as "win-now" even when reality doesn't support that.

I mean they’ve done better than Tampa in both the regular season and playoffs in recent years.

I think you can criticize the players the Leafs have targeted but there’s really nothing to criticize about a team in their position using draft picks to try and improve. Their stars are nearing the end of their prime and the defense is old, they won the division. They’re not going to be in a better spot to contend for another decade tbh.

I don't understand how a team with
- the greatest goal scorer of all time, who just happens to be one of the best defensive forwards in NHL history
- a two way offensive Dynamo winger who is so good defensively that he could have been a dman
- 4 top pairing dmen
- the two best power forwards currently in the NHL
- will the thrill Nylander, a forward who is so good that he's burning everyone's bridges down;

simply cannot make the third round.
Someone the other day said Matthews was OV+Barkov and Marner is basically identical to Fedorov, blew my mind.

Vancouver media guy suggests that defense and goaltending hasn't been very good in Toronto for all these years

Nylander disappears at times every series.
Nylander is often our most dangerous playoff forward. He has stepped during high pressure situations including elimination Games. He didnt against Florida this year, though. We will have to agree to disagree on this one
