Post-Series Talk: The Florida Panthers defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 (mod warning in OP)

He didn't do himself any favors by stinking up the joint at worlds this past week either. He needed a break but probably feels he needs to play out of the rut. He's a youngish though and should be fine, as you guys know very well goalies are weird and can go from a sieve to a brick wall in between periods let alone an offseason.
Eesh, I haven’t laid much attention to Worlds, as you said he’s young, he’ll figure it out. Obviously very talented.

Tkachuk, Barkov, Verhaeghe, pretty quiet last night. Reinhart got a late goal after the game was out of reach. The Panthers third line dominated.
Meanwhile, Leafs' depth did f*** all as usual, but they'll be trashing the core 4 and running Marner out of town.

The Leafs aren't a hockey team, they are a clothing and merchandise company that occasionally plays hockey. They exist only to sell insanely overpriced tickets and jerseys to blindly loyal fans. That's why they don't change anything despite collapsing every year. They don't need to. Their owners get richer every year, their players sign massive contracts that pay out regardless of how they perform in the playoffs, and they have no shortage of fans wanting to give them money to support them because "this is the year".

The only way things will actually change in Toronto is if the fans boycott the team, stop buying jerseys and hoodies, and stop going to games. And we all know that's not going to happen, because as soon as the team drops prices on anything, there will be an inrush of fans who could previously not afford it, and then they'll be right back to where they were again. Management is going to make changes only because they have to, as Marner and Tavares are UFA. If it weren't for that, they would simply put the same Core Fore back on the ice next season, and rotate the bottom six.

Now, I'm assuming he's correct, so there's your issue.

Also, I'm pretty sure none of those were scored by the core 4, which is even more crazy.

If I recall correctly, Sportsnet posted that the core 4 has 0 goals in games 7s and just a few assists each.

Could be mistaken, but even if so, it's maybe 1 that has scored.

I went from wanting Marner to being pretty much convinced you have to make this guy a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

Not only does he not help you at times, he hurts your team more than he helps.

Marner has 0 goals, 2 assists and a -7. Just pathetic.

The Habs definitely don't come out of this season as losers. Nobody expected them to make the playoffs. They fought a hard battle against the top team in the East. This season looks more like a teaser of what's to come.
Agreed. That club is on the opposite trajectory of the Leafs.

I'm curious to see what Brad Marchand's stats are like when playing in a game 7, as in whether he's been a major contributor in most (or all) of them, or just happens to be on the team that wins. If it's the former, he may very well be in contention to displace Justin Williams as Mr. Game Seven.
Too lazy to look back, but I believe he is at least a PPG in these games. If not, it may have been 6pts in 7

Pretty rare for teams with sub-50 CF% on the regular season to win the cup. Vegas, Washington, and the 2009 Penguins are outliers in the last 20 years. Perhaps never does a team finishing 29th in CF% win the cup, which is where the Leafs were, down there with Anaheim, San Jose and Chicago.

Really feels to me like Bennett got what he wanted.
Taking out the best player on the opposing team is a complete drag for the sport. I watch to enjoy the best players perform at the highest level, not to watch a rat remaining on the field.

It's honestly crazy what happened last night. I'm not sure what the conversation today would be if the Leafs lost a hard fought close game 7... but they essentially no-showed a game 7 in their own building.

Seems like everyone wants Marner gone... I get he doesn't perform in the playoffs but may I ask how they are going to replace 90 points in the lineup?

Also while it's easy to blame this on Marner since that's what Leafs fans love to do... Nylander had ZERO POINTS and was a -3 games 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Matthews had 1 goal and no assists and was a -3 games 4, 5, 6, and 7. 1 goal in that series.

Tavares had zero points and was a -5 games 4, 5, 6, and 7.

The star players don't show up when it matters. If Marner shows up the least, fine... don't re-sign him. How do you replace 90 regular season points? Then who do you blame it on when Matthews and Nylander no-show in next year's big games?

The Leafs have to re-sign Mariner. You can't replace such leadership by browsing the free agent market. The Leafs depth players failed their fans. They need to able to support their elite players. Only a fool would argue otherwise.

I'm not going to argue, he looked terrible. He's also a perennial 100 point RW. Tavares taking up 11 mill hampered their depth, and Tavares is cooked.
