Why am I the only one who will bother to do the math?

If you subtract the 18, you better subtract the two games. That's 31 goals in 12 games, or 2.6 goals per game. That's average. And if you go around the league and subtract each team's highest scoring pair of games, you'll find most teams below that 2.6 goals per game mark.
How are you getting 31?
47-18=29?

There are some areas I'm looking to see improvement in the next couple weeks:
1) Can Bob stay red hot? I'm not sure the team can count on him to be this good all season. Plus, he's started 13 of 14 games which is a lot (thanks in part to the spread out schedule). The team has a ridiculous 5 in 7 the week of Thanksgiving and 6 games in 9 days starting tomorrow. We'll probably see Curtis against Colorado and/or one of the Florida games.
2) Special teams coming back to earth. I don't think these rates are sustainable (the PK is already falling off a bit after the St. Louis game). Can the team generate another 0.5-1 goal per game at even strength?
3) Unsustainable shooting percentages from guys like Foligno, Anderson, Hartnell. As these regress, can Dubinsky and Jenner start producing more?
4) Hold on until Jones is back. I'm not a huge fan of some of the pairs and I think the blue line will look much better with Werenski reunited with Jones on the top pair.

We do have the 8th best record in the league based on PPG (1.29). That's near a 105/106 pace over 82 games which would blow just about everyone's expectations out of the water. I'd say cautious optimism is the feeling right now...realizing we have a ton of divisional games ahead and that it's not Thanksgiving yet. A lot can still happen.

If you are going to go with this, you should throw out the top two scoring games for everyone and see where the jackets stand. Plus, average it per game because the jackets have played less games then a lot of teams.

No, I'm not doing all that right now, but my guess is the jackets are at least middle of the pack.

Ok, so out of boredom, or curiosity I did this. I took away the highest 2 scoring games for every team then divided it by games played with 2 games removed. Luckily none of the scores involved a SO win so the numbers were are even as could be.

Bottom line is Jackets go from second to to 9th in scoring. Those that want to say "told ya so", now is your chance...

There. Here is your prize :win:

So through the whole league the difference averages out to a -.44 GPG difference. Interestingly enough, the Flyers and Sharks both had the lowest difference with -.24 while the CBJ had the highest by a mile of -.94. No other team was higher than .75(TOR) and only 3 teams were above .55(OTT @ .55 and MTL @ .58) Every other team was between -.28 and -.49.

The Rangers still would lead @ 3.87 GPG.
Top 10 would be:

NYR @ 3.87
PHI @ 3.00
CHI @ 2.73
MTL @ 2.71
TBL @ 2.67
PIT @ 2.64
WPG @ 2.5
FLA @ 2.43
CBJ @ 2.42
TML @ 2.38

Comparing the GPG for the CBJ this year to past years:

16-17 3.36 GPG with 14 games, 2.42 with the 18 G and 2 games removed
15-16 2.67 GPG
14-15 2.87 GPG
13-14 2.81 GPG
12-13 2.50 GPG Shortened season
11-12 2.46 GPG
10-11 2.62 GPG

Now I did not go through all the games from these years so the numbers aren't exactly apples to apples, but I am guessing the statistical difference through the season would be far less than .10 outside of the shortened season.

Again, this was never meant to be anything more than my concerns with the team through the first 14(12) games.
All these meaningless numbers were generated while drinking the first cup of coffee of the day so YMMV.:D

Salt of the great sea and sands of dream from the shore I once again picked to my pocket.

There is no easy games like it used to be. Game one means as much as game fourteen.

Getting back on track.. I pretty much agree with all the reasons to think we are playing at an extremely high level:

Rest that Bob guy a little, get Jones back, Dubs & Jen back on track.. please keep shooting the puck & going to the net. So many winning teams have someone that pots rebounds. Figs, Hartnell, Anderson, Gagner have all had success scoring off rebounds.

cross your fingers..young guys can keep living the dream!!

The CBJ have played 14 games. In one they scored 10, in one they scored 8. If every 7th game they hung a 9 on the board, I would be quite willing to take my chances with the outcome in the other 6, without knowing any other factors. Sign me up for that.

I like foligno's captain-like actions in the blues game, but I guess I'm a bit behind watching the games. Sad Jones is injured. I like Johnson being more physical, I hope we keep him. Werenski is fun to watch. I don't really have anyone I want traded these days, that's pretty awesome. I wish instead of sedlak or one of the other 4th line guys we dressed someone who could fight and forecheck hard, because players like Chris Neil will be a pain in the ass for this team. Dress one player with soup cans for hands!

in my opinion we are ok with the current lineup actually have skilled hockey players - the argument for having a player willing to fight is age old - I think we have the right kind of agitators that play the iritation game but do not take the penalties. A side from Calvert slashing sticks & Hartzy occasionally reaching and holding due to his lack of foot speed we are doing ok w/o a Boll in the lineup. Sedlak almost scored - Anderson has, Karlsson has - those are welcome points on the scoreboard

I must have been watching a different team. I see a much more talented team that has been showing they can sometimes take over games, and steal games they should lose. That's great. But they're not that good yet.

Our depth scoring is way up. Besides that, there's no real shortage of toughness. Anderson, on the Karlsson line, can fight and score. He's done plenty of both. I think he tried to fight Wilson last game but Wilson wouldn't go. Foligno can seriously throw them - of course we don't want him doing that too much. And Prout hasn't gone anywhere, and is actually playing good hockey.

Agree with all. IMO, it seems better to have guys on the ice whom opponents do NOT want to fight - the best of both worlds! And imo, no signs of lack of toughness, might even be more jazz to the team when someone like Foligno, Anderson or Calvert get engaged to fight, rather than a designated fighter. Shoot, Calvert got punched by the puck last night - and his return (and subsequent goal) generated more positive juice and flow than any fight.
Plus the goals from Gagner, Karlson and Calvert to win a game against division leader last night underscores that scoring threat needed from EACH of the 4 lines. One non-contributor brings down the entire line.

I've always felt this was obviously the case.

Also obvious: If there is a fight, that means both teams fight, and we shouldn't assume the jazz works in our favor.
