Gudbranson has been way better than I was anticipating. I'll start preparing my crow here shortly, but I still think their direction is flawed when it comes to building the defense.

I (and many others) said before the season that they needed another PMD. I think the issue is glaring when they are without Letang and/or Schultz, but I think it still exists even when they are both healthy. Needing another PMD is still true, but now they have another $4M D with term that isn't a PMD. So in my ideal world, they keep one of Maatta, Gudbranson, and JMFJ and find a PMD to fill out the top 6.

Dumo - Letang
Maatta/JMFJ/X - Schultz
Petterson - Gudbranson/X
Riikola

And please just extend Schultz this summer.

Yeah, I think this is reasonable. I think Gudbranson had at least a season or back to back seasons of being a perfectly solid #5 defenseman for Florida, but it's not like he was consistently doing that. His time in Vancouver also can't be ignored.

I'd be very satisfied with him being the bottom pair RD if the Penguins would have a better LD than Maatta or Johnson on the 2nd pair. However, it seems like the Penguins are putting their eggs in the Johnson basket and Maatta is going to be the odd man out.

JJ playing on his proper side and with a puck mover like Schultz seems like a perfectly adequate #4, and his salary lines up fine with that. Guds has been way better than I expected, and I'm glad for that. At least he's a RHD playing on the right side, we've been dealing with stopgaps on the right side for so long it's odd to have the D corp all on their proper sides.

We're paying Guds too much for a bottom pair role, but there is some premium to be paid for an enforcer, and some premium for a RHD, so it is what it is.

We need to get rid of Maatta for some value at the draft, and extend Schultz at for a similar cap hit. And getting Pettersson to re-sign for a good cap hit is essential in making all of this work. Luckily he isn't even arbitration eligible yet, and should be RFA for another 3 or 4 years, so we should be ok. What a great acquisition Pettersson has been.

The issue is that the 2nd pair has been getting absolutely caved with Johnson and Schultz on it, to the point where I don't want to gamble on that trend changing. A part of that may be due to the forwards and system (actually, I'd consider it a majority of the problem), but they should still be trying for better than Johnson as the 2nd pair LD.

Maybe, but Schultz behind Geno should be more than sufficient. They're handling #1 pair assignments right now. When you add Dumo and Letang back in the mix, that's going to eat up all the toughest minutes.

Eventually Pettersson will slot up with Schultz as 2nd pair LD, probably as soon as next year. But we'd probably be better served to have him with Guds.

So are you saying that he is protected by the guys in front of him? Maybe he is a player that shines the last quarter of the season. Did he have decent TOI in Vancouver I never watched him.
