Instead, Gudbranson will lift the Cup with a -3 over the play-offs and 2 celebrated fights. Johnson somehow scores the cup winning goal. Both become folk heroes. Sane people are left wondering what the world is. Dman prices around the league crater as clearly they no longer matter.

Man... that WOULD be just the absolute best. Like I wouldn't even care that it would wreck the rest of this team's window since JR would just go load up on more cementheads and then wonder why we can't score any goals or transition the puck for the next 3+ years but can you imagine the reaction league-wide? Holy sheepshit it would be incredible! I think some people would literally lose their minds. Wonder if this is even all real. That kind of thing.

Hockey's Future - Erik Gudbranson

"Talent Analysis

Gudbranson is a skilled, punishing defender who worked diligently on his offensive skills during his 2010-11 season in Kingston. He is a natural, vocal leader both on and off the ice. He has a booming shot, and has built up his offensive effectiveness through intelligent decision-making with the puck, improved up-ice passing and a better sense of when to pinch up into the offensive zone. His play in his own end is top-level, and his physical presence means that opposing forwards must always be on their toes. He is a complete defensive package, with improving offensive abilities.

Read more at Hockey's Future - Erik Gudbranson"

Let's hope he gets back to some semblance of this scouting report. Also, after these last two JMFJ games, I think some of us are a bit more hopeful of Gudbranson not being a failure here.

In this beautiful fantasy world, Rutherford goes contrarian investor again and reverts back to speed while the rest of the league loads up on speed and wins. Again.

Good stuff @Jesse.

Do you have any thoughts on why his analytic numbers looked better a few years ago? His possession numbers have never been great, but if you look at his cRel from his rookie season to his first season in Vancouver, they don't look that bad. There's one year where he's at minus 6, but other years he is below 3 for all of them except one where he's at -4.4. In particular he had a good two year stretch in that regard with -1.4 cRel and -2.8 cRel from his age 22-23 seasons.

It's only recently in the past two years that the numbers have truly fallen off a cliff in Vancouver.

Was he just deployed with better players in Florida?

Hey, I'll look further into this and get back to you. I didn't really dive into his Florida time too much to be able to say off the top of my head.

I expected it to be more harsh than just calling Gudbranson "struggling", I expected you to say 'he's bad lol"

Just like with what was said above, I would be interested in something like this done for his time in Florida. Gudbranson admitted that he didn't play well in Vancouver, so it makes me think that he believes he can be better than what he was in Vancouver. I'd like to see what "better" has been for him, which would be his years in Florida which don't look too bad analytically (2013-2016 specifically).

Gudbranson's most regular EV linemates in Florida according to Dobber would mainly be Willy Mitchell, Brian Campbell, Kulikov and Dylan Olsen.

He played well yesterday.. But Goodbranson is an upgrade from Trotman all across the board.

Looking at him more analytically, he had a good year in 2013-2014, a solid year in 2014-2015 (his bad rel stats come mostly from a dominant top pair, Gudbranson was around 50% for most of his advanced stats) and a mediocre year in 2015-2016 that was really good with Campbell and really bad with Mitchell.

His stats match what logic tells you about a player like him: put him with a bad puck mover in a big defensive role and he'll be bad, and put him with a good puck mover in a lesser role and he'll be solid to good for you. His Florida stats make me think he'd do well with Pettersson or be bad with Johnson (I think Mitchell was a worse puck mover then than JJ now, though).

According to this horrendous wad of data, it looks like Campbell was his best partner over those three years, but he has positive REL GF% with all of Olsen, Campbell and Mitchell. That's not too bad if you can wash the Vancouver off of him.

I'm surprised to see that with Mitchell, his shot differentials are horrendous with Mitchell and Mitchell seems like the exact kind of player that would create a tire fire of a pair with Gudbranson. Get him back to his Florida days and put him on a pair with Pettersson, do I dare say that I think that could be a good bottom pair?

I hope so because that's what's happening. And... well, Pettersson is very good, so its up to Gudbranson and the coaches really. And the lines in front of them. Even for a meh player, that scenario should be workable.

Oh god, how far this team has fallen

Can you even imagine 18 months ago that we're hoping that a 2nd pair with Johnson and a 3rd pair with Gudbranson would work for this team? Dear lord. Johnson was good in 2016-2017 for the Jackets, but still.

.... that might be the single most depressing post I've read here this year.

And this is why, after everything's cooled off, I still think Rutherford and everyone around him should be sacked. I'm willing and ready to root for Gudbranson, to hope he's capable of going back to his Florida form and everything, but we shouldn't be taking these gambles. One is... I dunno, whatever, everyone has aberrations. Two should lose him his job.
