I would do a Galchenyuk for Pageau 1 for 1. Put Pageau at 3C. Use Bjugstad to either bring in a winger for the top 6 or upgrade the defense.

Anyone willing to give Kovalchuk a shot? He’s apparently been told to not show up to work anymore, but he can practice with team. King’s fans alluding to an issue with coaching and that Kovalchuks play is not the issue.
It's because a KHL team is trying to poach him, and I'd imagine the "don't show up" is due to Kovalchuk taking the offer, or initiating the discussion while under contract with the Kings.

I'd just move Bjugstad in a separate deal for a pick and the cap space if Guerin wants him.

Wonder if Ottawa would do Gally for Pageau? Not sure they would . . .

This team still needs another left wing.

It would be nice if once, just once, we went into the playoffs with four top 6 wingers for our big two Cs.

L2 LW
L1 RW

Not sure you need studs. Just better for Jake-Sid and Geno-Rust. Slide McCann into the bottom six.

Shit, we take that Galchenyuk for Pageau deal and run like Hell. That would be a fleecing.

Don't think either Bjugstad or Galchenyuk have any real value though.

It wouldn't be a 1 for 1, but that could be a base. Galchenyuk may re-sign in Ottawa.

I'm not sure. He is a free agent after this season, so maybe if he didn't want to re-sign with Ottawa? I just think he'd be an interesting target.
I thought Pageau was a UFA too? I don't even know. Maybe Ottawa would pay us back for the Brassard trade.

He'd definitely be an interesting target, but I think @Big Friggin Dummy is right that you'd have to add a significant asset to Gally to get him.

EDIT: Pageau has 8g, 4a, +15 in 17 games. Definitely a significant asset would need to be added.

I imagine Pageau gets a similar return to Stone if he keeps up this season. 1st or 2nd + a solid prospect.

If they want what they got for Stone, they are getting a much better return for Pageau's production. Stone has been wildly more productive over his career than Pageau.

Pageau has never broken 20 goals, and only broke 40 points once. Stone broke 20 goals 5 times and was a consistent 60+ point player. Literally twice the production of Pageau.

Kahun may yet turn out to be a legit top six left wing. I think the bigger question at the moment is whether we still have a legit #2 center.

Ten years ago? Sure. Now? No. Definitely not worth that cap hit.

Did a quick filter on players around Chucky's age and "not cheap" who aren't scoring that much:

Mikael Granlund
Sam Bennett
Nino Niederreiter
Charlie Coyle

Granlund seems, to me, to be the most realistic option of the four.

On the other hand, Hall's already made a tonne of money playing the game. Does he care about winning or getting paid an extra $2 million per year? He's talked about how he wants to win because he's always been on teams missing the playoffs, so if that's true at all he might be willing to take a slight discount to sign with a club he feels gives him a good chance to win the Cup.

While it can always happen, ultimately we've seen very few instances of this actually happening. Maybe Hall will be different and actually do that in order to win... but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

He’ll get a 7 year deal. 2 mil discount equates to 14 mill in money he would miss out on. Not happening.

It’s his last contract he can cash in on. These guys say all the right things - but it’s always about the money in the end - and rightfully so.

He's made a little under 50m so far in his career. Given that he's going to get at least another 50m contract, and probably closer to 60m at the very low end (with him giving someone a discount), I don't think that 14m is going to matter a ton at the end of the day - if he really does want to win as much as he claims he does. At some point enough money is in fact enough money. The amounts we're talking about here do not relate the same way into a percentage of income earned like it does for someone who makes 50/100k a year. He could lose half of his income (now and future income) and it wouldn't change his way of life what-so-ever.

The big question however is whether he actually does this or not... or if at the end of the day he takes the money and just pays lip service to "wanting to win". In most cases we see the latter not the former.

Serious question: who was the last player to sign at a discount for a chance at the cup?

Karia. Or was it Selanne? One of them signed for less than 2m in Colorado to chase a cup ~15/20 years ago. That's the last deal that really comes to mind where a player took far less in order to really try to win. And it was a 1 yr deal. There might have been a few other cases since then, but overall they're few and far between.

It was actually both of them. They were a "package deal" kinda like Suter and Parise

Not sure if it was a real discount in salary, but Hossa signed that deal with the wings when the pens made him a significant long term offer. Or at least it was at least rumored we did.
