This season has just been an exercise in lurching from one unfortunate event to the next.

Out of, like, our 10 most important players the only ones that haven't had something crappy happen to them are Hughes and Garland.

Before the season even started, and this is just to highlight the insanity of what's gone on, Demko was diagnosed with a knee injury no goalie, let alone hockey player, has ever had before and Dakota Joshua was diagnosed with cancer. Cursed franchise.

Pettersson and the Monstars. JT Miller situation. Boeser being the victim of the dirtiest hit thrown in the NHL this year.

Someone said this felt like 07-08 but hopefully it's more like 93-94 where we had an underachieving season with tons of things that went wrong and then everything came together at the end when we snuck into the playoffs as the 7th seed.

i choose to believe that all of these, er, “tests” that have been befalling the team since joshua’s cancer diagnosis are the makings of one hell of a narrative arc that will be made into a disney movie about a plucky team everyone kept thinking was doomed that overoverovercame to rallyk from a 3-1 deficit to beat the refs in game seven OT and win the cup.

starring timothy chalamet as hughes of course.

We've officially entered the dreaded timeline of Myers or Desharnais playing with Hughes.

ironically, not investing in zad might be the thing that saves the season

assuming that we can bring in some help on the right side of course

that said, as ever the real solution here is quinn being able to shift to the right side. can he? who knows but i would hope he’s been working on it the last few summers

maybe this will be good long-run growth

desharnais emerging as a viable partner for hughes would be massive

i mean that would be even more extreme than burrows moving from the checking line and becoming what he became, because burrows was already a very good checking/energy guy at that point and at his best desharnais hasn’t shown much beyond treading water.

is there a better precedent? i just can’t remember a player levelling up from fringe NHLer to legit top pair/line option like that. like, how are four-odd extra high leverage minutes not going to cave him in?

but i guess you never know.

We’d need a Jeff Brown-esque deal to fix our blue line in order for this to be more like 1994 than 2008.

I keep telling myself this in my head as well. Or the Kings in the season that shall not be named.

That's reaching. And he's also injured right now.

forgot to add the #cope

to be clear, i don't think anyone internally is going to emerge as a long-term viable top pairing option. but with how good hughes has been, the option to sporadically have him carry the top pair with desharnais or juulsen or even brannstrom could allow hronek to carry a second pair once he's back, giving the coaches another configuration when needed

and that's fully sugar coating that it will be devastating if hronek is out for long

We’d need a Jeff Brown-esque deal to fix our blue line in order for this to be more like 1994 than 2008.

the beauty of that deal was we got both brown and hedican to fill out our D and with the addition of brian glynn off waivers and diduck returning to the lineup for good in march, we were able to permanently delete the trio of plavsic, slegr, and dirk from our lineup, even after murzyn got injured in the first round.

sadly, we need more than a brown and hedican this time around,

but man, given the state of this blueline, what we really need is a pat quinn in the spring of 1991 run

we were running

lumme lidster
nordmark butcher
plavsic guy

at the midway mark, but went into the playoffs with

lumme diduck
kurvers murzyn
dirk lidster

and all it cost us was brian bradley, ronnie stern, kevan guy, a 4th rounder, and a tiny fraction of dan quinn/butcher

get to work, patrik

The offseason work on the defense was pretty sketchy to begin with, and it was all basically predicated on Hughes and Hronek staying healthy. Woops.

think the obvious short term "solution" is to put brannstrom on the right next to Hughes, and then incorporate Forbort and Desharnais.
