The Ducks had Lindholm, Theodore, Pettersson and Montour at one point

I feel really the only thing the Ducks miscalculated there was giving Vegas Theodore to keep Vatanen around but boy oh boy did they they mess that up, as Theodore would pretty much immediately become a core piece on a perennial contender while Vatanen's time with the Ducks was up anyway and he was shipped off a few months later. I think they got decent enough assets back for all of Lindholm, Manson and Montour once it was evident the team was headed for a rebuild. Sure they kinda tied their own hands regarding Fowler with his contract and probably held on to him for too long but I don't think they really lost anything essential because of that.

Tbh I think it kind of highlights the difficulty and importance of finding a legit #1, as well as how meaningless good drafting can be if the organization doesn't realize what they have (Theodore).

The Ducks overall have drafted quite well, but the problem is they didn't really draft any superstars for a long time. Fowler and Lindholm at their peak were both top pairing guys, but neither was what I'd consider an elite 1D, more like okay 1Ds and really good 2Ds. And their best forward finds were guys like Rakell or Palmieri ... good players, but not guys you can build a team around. They've even found a lot of legit goalies over the years, but again no superstar one.

Overall their drafting has been consistently good, but home runs are lacking.

Well again… we are 5 wins behind you, much younger, with much better youngsters. The end is near and we are going to be better then you for a long long time.
Anaheim has more goals saved above expected than any team in the league and can still only manage the 26th best record in the league.

Currently 30th in xGF%. Same as last year.

Meaning the "progress" you've made this year probably isn't sustainable.

Only 4 teams have less regulation wins than Anaheim.

Remains to be seen if your young players amount to much. Some will be good, some will be busts. Don't count your eggs before they hatch.

If Detroit and Ottawa make the playoffs, Ducks will have the longest playoff drought in the league outside Buffalo.

Always surprises me that this isn’t brought up very often.

That’s 3 top pairing defensemen and a solid top 4 D in Pettersson.

They also had Vatanen when he actually had value and hadn’t washed out of the league yet.

And Fowler at a much higher valuation point than what he was traded for this season.

Team was heading towards a rebuild but they traded the younger prospects and kept Fowler till he declined instead. Which might have still been OK if they had gotten good value for them, but they basically gifted Theodore to Vegas and discarded Montour.

This might be one of the most overlooked series of bad decisions in terms of trading and keeping defensemen in history.
Whats even more surprising is how little we got in return for them

no clue why they CHOSE to expose a #1 in Theodore.
Because of Kevin Bieksa lol

This is why i hate when Vegas fans brag about fleecing Anaheim for Theodore. They were essentially going to lose a top tier D guy no matter what. May as well get out from under a contract in the process.

Vegas fans shouldn't brag about anything. They were gift wrapped a contender by the NHL and the expansion draft.

Think the hinge point in the Ducks mismanagement of their D core was over valuing Sami Vatanen at the expansion draft and bobbling Shea Theodore. That was the beginning of the end for their D Dynasty.

Montour was also slow to develop and slipped though their fingers. But he wasn’t good for a long time after in Buffalo either.

Everyone always talks about the Preds as being an elite defenseman drafting team but Anaheim low-key just as good.
First 15 years, absolutely, since Josi got drafted, who have we got? Fabbro, Carrier and Girard who've hit the NHL? Then picking Molendyk two years ago, we'll see how he develops, I'm hopeful. What used to be a factory of D has turned awfully dry.

everyone KNEW they were a core with sky high potential back then, they just werent putting it together. Theodore was highly regarded and many eyebrows were raised when he was exposed. I recall looking at their core and they had like 7 or 8 potential playoff-style top 4s, timing of development was just off.

The Ducks pipeline dried up for a couple years too, but it was a period where they didn't pick many D at all. From 2015-18 they had 25 draft picks, but only selected three dmen, and two were good (Mahura a depth D, Larsson detailed by injuries).

A few hits in those years would probably have kept them from bottoming out. They got away from their strength.
