The downfall of Taylor Hall

Healthy scratched by Chicago last night.

2g/6 pts in 17gp... Had 36 pts in 61 gp two years ago with Boston. That 94 pt MVP season with NJ looks like a flash in the pan for what's turned out to be a very mid career by a 1st overall pick.

What happened to him? Too many injuries, not a high enough compete level?

Oilers ruined a lot of 1st overalls during that period...too much pressure and poor management. They almost ruined Draisatl also...

It's crazy to me that despite Seguin having a major injury history as well ( which lead to him having to completely change his game because he can't skate for shit now ) he still has almost 150 games more played than Hall.
Hall had major injury issues literally from the start of his career. Seguin had injuries later in his career which is not uncommon. Hall has been fighting it since he was 18.

Never a compete level issue with Hall he was a full out competitor. I'd imagine it has a lot to do with his injuries. Pretty sure he's had at least 5 or 6 surgeries, many of them to his knees. I'd imagine his knees are pretty much shredded at this point which probably kills his skating.

Yeah him putting up 80 in 75 in 13-14 is certainly the Oilers ruining him. 42 in 60 as a rookie, really rushed him hey? Meanwhile the Flyers are scratching Michkov in consecutive games...

Hall was never a cerebral player, his athleticism carried him. Have to imagine the injuries aren't helping.

I remember following the Taylor vs. Tyler pre-draft debate closely and hockey 'experts' speculated that Hall would have a better start to his career but would burn out quicker whereas Seguin would be the better player in the long run... crazy to see that's exactly how it played out.

I loved Hall as an Oiler but looking back, taking the right handed centre would have made more sense... At least they eventually got a right handed D for him

I never expected to love his play style so much. Before he came to the Bruins, I really thought of him as a “pure skill” player. Didn’t realize the guy’s level of drive and physicality when he was on. Played one of the harder games you’ll see for a player with his skill set. Just a great power skater.

I have to imagine it’s that hard rough and tumble style that’s getting to him at this point (partially verified by last years injury in Chicago). Too bad. I really do think his reputation is unfairly tarnished sometimes for never living up to the consistent point expectations.

He always seemed like a really dumb player, was never a huge fan and while njd got the better player the larsson trade wasn’t as terrible as it was made out to be at the time

For those asking about his character. There are stories of how he was a massive prick to different bar staffs here in Vancouver.

one number sticks out to me with Hall and games played. Just looked at how many times in 14 seasons he played 70+ games? 5 times only. He played 80+ only twice. HIs MVP season was a unicorn season

Aren’t there rules on unsubstantiated rumors and speculation? You couldn’t even say very obvious reasons why certain players that were on a certain world juniors might not be in the lineup when it was a big national story.

He had potential to be a very good player. The issue he had over the years was his attitude and the fact he's not entirely the smartest person, but not just that was spoiled rotten as a kid. But he also didn't listen to coaches and came into Edmonton with a lot of pressure being their first ever first overall pick. In the Taylor vs Tyler what needed to be noted was sure Hall had a way better career in the OHL, but what made Seguin so unique in my eyes was from what I understood he went pointless in his first ten games but managed to get more points at the end of the season than games, and in his draft year he only had AJ Jenks to work with. But as for Hall he had a staggering amount of assistance that didn't end most of which were drafted to the NHL. But let alone these, Hall dealt with more injuries.

Apparently, he was such a problem that Edmonton did that New Jersey trade because they just needed to get rid of him. But either way I believe they should've gotten way more for him.

Meh

I would’ve loved to see him stay in NJ but he didn’t really hide the fact that he didn’t like it here. I don’t wish bad things on people but I’m not gonna shed any tears for him either.

What did him in was that knee injury after his Hart year (which I will still defend to the bitter end). He needed that kind of movement in order to be at his best. Without that movement, he's a shell of himself.

I agree that he was a bitch on the way out of NJ, but look at that trade tree. We got Bahl (reclaimed enough as a player to trade for Markstrom), a second round pick (traded to the Caps for Siegenthaler in the runup to the Kraken expansion draft), and a first round pick that had its condition fulfilled (used to select Dawson Mercer). That more than makes up for the end of his time. And, frankly, he was honest about what he wanted from us in 2019-20: he wanted to be competitive, but they weren't. Blunt, yes, but understandable, even if he was a whiner by the end. I don't want him back because he's cooked, but if he does, I'll forgive him.

You mean to tell me that the guy who complained about wanting to play for a winner, went to free agency, and signed a one year "show me" contract in Buffalo isn't smart?
