NeelyDan's Friday Five:

1. You can go back in time and live in whatever era/culture/time/etc. you wish. Which is it?
2. What are the first three 'favourites' saved in your browser?
3. Do you swallow watermelon seeds? Squish Jell-O through your teeth? Eat fried chicken skin folded as a munch before the rest of the chicken? Tell us your shameless eating "thing."
4. Coffee? Beer? Diet Coke? Dasani? If you are one of those people who must have a container of liquid near you at all times, what is it, generally?
5. If you could go back and do it all again, would you?
1) The 80s. goddamn it was a great time...and there was no stress.
I would like to experience the Victorian age. It's my favorite literary time period and I would be interested in meeting the Lady of Shallot.

2) My website, the recordings access from my international talk and X (I know, I'm boring)

3)No, you aliens. My thing is texture. I eat steak with my fingers and sometimes chicken. I put cheese on pie with fruit, one slice and cheddar or Swiss.

4)Usually water with liquid V, but if not, it's Ollipop

5)No. It was all stepping stones for me to live a grateful, present life. No do overs (a few regrets)....we just learn and move forward. :)
Everything that happened allowed me to be where I am an content.

1. 1990. The year I graduated college and started flight school in the Nav. I wouldn't change a thing, I just want to do it all over again, but better. Like a great amusement park ride.

2. My Fidelity Account, The Athletic, and the Wall Street Journal

3. I eat tomatoes (from my garden) like most people eat an apple. With a little shake of salt before every bite.

4. Coffee before noon. Water or iced tea after that. Bourbon in the evenings.

5. Hell yes. I have a wonderful life and I'd happily do it all again. Only changes I'd make is to invest in Starbucks, Amazon and Apple and retire early. I'd also catch a couple of bands in concert that I missed in the 90s.

It's always a tricky question to answer because on one hand I'd love to see Victorian England but don't want to die of smallpox. I've also come to realize that at this point, I've stopped wasting energy on hypotheticals and focus on the real.
Besides, the current day has advantages of technology and communication that no other era could have. Like if you love 80s music, you can listen to entire catalogues of Van Halen and Michael Jackson on your phone with a click of a button any time, any place. In actual 1985 you'd have to wait for the radio to play one song or be tied to a vinyl record player for music.

You can watch Indiana Jones or the Goonies on a streaming app easily today, But in 1985 you'd have to pick up a newspaper to find a list of showtimes, then drive down to the theater to watch a movie unless you were privileged enough to own a VHS player.

You can say the best stuff was released during a short window in your childhood, but there's no denying that it's way easier to access all of that today. Not to mention general improvements in health and such.

That said, there are also major societal problems that this giant network of information has wrought that we can't get into lest it devolve into a political argument of some kind, so I don't want to say that today is the best and is perfect. But it is where we are and what we have in front of us, so take it as you will.

As a form of torture?

1. Ooh. This is a hard one. As a history buff every period fascinates me for one thing or another. Maybe that's why I enjoy the Outlander books(and show of course!). Part of me wants to pick The Colonial Era because of everything that happened here in New England, Revolutionary War stuff. A part of me wants the Medieval times. Everything is fascinating to me. I guess my final answer would be something between the 70's and Early 80's. I'd love to hang out with my mom in her teens in the 70's. In all honesty, I'd probably just go back to the 90's an experience my childhood again. It's a toss up really!

2. HFBoards. Twitter. Facebook.

3. I don't have any shame really! Haha. Though I do put ketchup on pretty much everything. I guess biting my nails? That's my nervous habit. I can't help it. Maybe always having to be by a window or an exit when I go out. Okay this has to do with food. I love strawberries but I can't look at them up close. If I get strawberry ice cream, it NEEDS to be blended. I don't want to see or eat chunks. I can't do it. I'll gag. Same with yogurt! Lol

4. Water. 100. And then maybe pedialyte or gatorade. But if you walk in the house and you see me sitting anywhere, a water will be next to me.

5. Absolutely. Even the hard times. The heartbreaking times. The times I am still trying to process. I would do it all over again. I'd cherish even more times with my loved ones. And I'm the MOST sentimental person you'll ever meet. I take nothing for granted. It would be a gift to do it all over again, even with the same outcomes.

Having worked from home for the last 3 1/2 years, if someone's at my desk first thing in the morning, it's going to be @Kovi with coffee. Sorry, I win.

I've worked at home full time since March of 2020, and not that I had a bad commute(from Newton or Waltham by bus to Mt. Auburn St. in Watertown), but it's been a boon in terms of being able to work lots of overtime, including on Saturdays and Sundays. I get more work done for my employer(we had plenty to go around the whole first half of this year) and I boost my pay while saving on various expenses.

Early 90s just so I didn't get drunk on cheap draught while I wasted my Nirvana ticket as they were playing in the hotel across the street. A friend and I still smack ourselves over that one. But $3 pitchers.
Ryan George on YouTube.best Canadian Ryan. Chess. Was a big one but trying to quit playing. Randomly sending people things in the mail. Nothing better than grabbing the mail and finding 'The Authorized Biography Of Farah Fawcett' in matte paper with no return. I've sent my friends and family bricks, hammers, buttons from their childhood, etc. Gratification delayed is not denied. Nothing beats someone randomly bringing up how they got a board game in the mail from No Return Address. Not internet but kinda fun.
Herring, borscht which I love.... but my disdain for pie and nuts mixed with anything gets people going.
Beer.
I'd go to the doctor more.... but it's the butterfly effect and I really like my kids.

If time travel was possible I'd like to bring someone from 100 years ago to the present just to see what their reactions would be to just about everything lol

My guess is that they would run screaming from the room.

I live off of Arlington St. & Coolidge Hill Rd.

Where did you work on Mt. Auburn St.?

1. You can go back in time and live in whatever era/culture/time/etc. you wish. Which is it?

I have a time machine so the question is a bit moot. Home, for the most part, is Boston's Back Bay (Beacon Street), 1889.
2. What are the first three 'favourites' saved in your browser?

I organize favorites by folder, but if you're asking about the first three sites I visit daily: The New York Times, Boston.com, and Politico. I check my media sites -- The New Yorker, The Atlantic, etc. -- and then it's on to B's news and, finally, HF.
3. Do you swallow watermelon seeds? Squish Jell-O through your teeth? Eat fried chicken skin folded as a munch before the rest of the chicken? Tell us your shameless eating "thing."

Don't care for sweets, prefer savory/umami. Saltacholic. Put it on nearly everything, even before I taste it. I know, I know.

I'll bring soup to simmer, stand over the pot, and literally salt each spoonful. I don't even bother with a bowl.

4. Coffee? Beer? Diet Coke? Dasani? If you are one of those people who must have a container of liquid near you at all times, what is it, generally?

Chilled water. Day and night. With my NewsHour martini & hors d'oeuvre, with my beer & pistachios.

5. If you could go back and do it all again, would you?

No.

I'm exceptionally lucky and blessed beyond words, especially in my family.

Even so, I've never loved life; I've grown to appreciate it.

Time machine or no, I live almost entirely in the present. It is the best place from which to operate.

Regrets piled high to the sky, yet, ultimately,

Non, je ne regrette rien.

1. The 70s. So many bands from that era that I wish I saw or was able to see in their prime. Also would have been old enough to really enjoy/appreciate the grunge era as it was happening instead of being a later adopter.

2. I currently have 113 tabs open on my phone. Most of them recipes I want to make or links to things I want to buy that I see on instagram. It’s a disaster.

3. I have a big thing with texture. Could only start eating ricotta in the last 20 years. Yogurt only if it has a crunchy element. I hate raw tomatoes but love tomato sauce and soup. Also, I like cold cuts (only Boar’s Head) but I eat them plain - I had cold sandwiches or wraps.

4. I don’t need coffee but I enjoy the taste and ritual of it, especially in the colder months. I’m definitely someone that always has an emotional support water bottle (but never a Stanley - there is only one Stanley Cup in my world, and if I was drinking out of it, wouldn’t be drinking water). I’m a sucker for bubbly, Pinot Grigio, and dominate bud light but also really enjoy trying new beers.

5. I’ve had way more good than bad in my life and I’m proud of how I worked to have the bad shape me into who I am. I’d go back and do it again in a heartbeat but hopefully with the knowledge that there’s no need to be so hard on myself.

I worked at 705 Mt. Auburn St., at Tufts Health Plan(now known as Point32health), first in the main building, then in the auxiliary building on the other side of the parking garage.

From how you've described the complex you live at, the Kurt Russell handyman guy from overboard probably couldn't make it to your place because he had a more severe fix at someone elses.

Got some antibiotic cream for my burn. It is slow healing and I’ve managed to get adhesive rash from the tape and bandaids I use to keep the non-stick pad on. I bought some of the self adhering wrap on Amazon and it will be here tomorrow. No more being stuck on bandaid brand.

The doctor on the virtual urgent care said I had a second degree burn. I put a sticky note on the cabinet above where it is reminding me to keep it pointed towards the wall at all times.

I'm about ready to call Mr. Miyagi lol
Wax on wax off with his head on Tuesday?

This storm line is wild, worst rain I've seen in 4 years out here.

We're ok flooding wise being up out of the bowl, but lots of areas are getting hammered bad. Pretty much all the drainage is full and the streets are running water downhill at 6" to 1 ft deep

The past is shadow, the future unknown. I don't mean to be cavalier, but don't bother about them.

The present is the only place to be, the only place from which to move effectively. Ask Z or Patrice, because that's all they talk about.

Self-flagellation and self-loathing regarding the past or constant anxiety about the future is pointless, exhausting, and a colossal waste of time. Take it from me.

Also, not to put too fine a point on it, if they can't take a joke, f*ck 'em.

Are you talking about the Tufts building with the Keenan St. bus stop out front?

I catch the bus there often, and after at least a full year, they're still building this or tinkering with that at this site.
And they've apparently been doing so with workers who are unlicensed and unbonded, which can't be true.

In the event, I greatly appreciate my little corner of Watertown.

That's it, took the 71 bus every day. Our headquarters are now in Canton, in the former Reebok building, but I haven't been there yet. Coolidge Square is a pleasant area.
