HF Habs: The Development Thread

I’m excited for his future with the Habs for sure.

Here’s my ice time predictions for our notable core defense.
Bold are players who I think is NHL ready or should be on opening day roster.

1. Reinbacher 24-25 mins per game (1-2 years away from NHL ready)
2. Guhle 22-23 mins per game
3. Hutson 20-21 mins per game (physically fresh as he’s a smaller player)
4. Mailloux 18-20 mins per game (he’s matured greatly, he’s now a leader)
5. Konyushkov 15-16 mins per game (smaller frame 5’11”, 2 years away from NHL ready)
6. Xhekaj 14-15 mins per game (I think Habs shouldn’t over play him, he’s a bottom pairing)
7. Struble 12-13 mins per game
8. Barron Something about his game that is disappointing. Lack of confidence maybe.
9. Engstrom 14-15 mins per game (1-2 years away from NHL ready)

The AHL is a trash league filled with journeryman and low ceiling players. What is a future cup contending centerpiece of our franchise going to learn in the AHL with subpar coaches? How to be soft? How to avoid injuries? How to play with low skilled grinders? How to score on AHL goaltending?

I'm less concerned about MSL and more concerned about Adam Nicholas the Development Coach with the massive ego. Re: our youngsters, what has he accomplished?

There isn't much to write home about. Speaking as a former consultant, he came across as a charlatan in every sketch and video posted

What has been wrong with Guhle, Xhekaj and even Struble's play (he was almost not signed so let's not pretend he was guaranteed to be an NHLer)? Also he does work with the entire team and prospects so Suzuki and Caufield are part of those guys. Ditto for Hutson.

At the end of the day he's a skills coach who focuses on highly nuanced stuff. It might be stuff that doesn't directly translate in production and it's for the player to integrate it into their play as well

When more players regress than make progress, the coach who was in charged with their development looks like a fraud or charlatan.

Guhle is pacing for 28 points every 82 games while playing a strong defensive game. Not sure how this is underwhelming for a dman who just turned 23 a few days ago and has only 158 games of experience. Guhle was not drafted as an offensive dman his ceiling was a two way dman doing 30 to 35 points a year while playing well defensively and he is on track to become that. Development is not a magical bean. Xhekaj was undrafted. His ceiling was not a NHLer. Him being in the NHL is already a win. Struble was a 2nd round pick his ceiling was a 3rd pairing dman.
