I don't mind if the Sabres overpay for Joshua. As long as the term isn't to much he is exactly the type of playoff player Buffalo needs.
That's the thing. If you want to sign him, you are going to have to give him term too, because someone else will. These will all likely be mistake contracts, at least in the long term.

Joshua is going to get a deadly contract for himself.

Love seeing these late bloomers become good players that all teams want and earn themselves massive contracts... Such a cool thing to see certain players EARN themselves a nice contract and not just be handed one for their potential

I was about to say the same thing. Those depth guys that become "popular" are doing so because they are playing for that next big contract and tend to provide value well above their current deal.

If you give any of them $4mil, you're hoping that they play to a $4mil level on a nightly basis. As you said, you want the guy making $2mil to provide the value of a $4-6mil guy.

I’d be okay with a guy playing like a 4 million player on a 4 million deal, but my biggest concern with these deals is when something happens and they fall off a bit, they don’t usually have the varied skill set to stay close to their contract value and they become another “just a guy” type player. So instead of being a little overpaid like when a better player loses a step, they become massively overpaid.

I’m guessing Joshua’s AAV starts with a 4 or higher.

Just don’t see these pure in the sky $3 million AAV’s

Sean Bergenheim/Joel Ward thing, for sure.
Joel was good value for the first year of his last deal, scoring 21 goals. He was a solid 3rd liner who got middle six money. Problem was he was 34 when he signed it and when it fell off it fell off hard.

But yes, these are the death by 1000 cuts contracts.

thanks Friedman you dolt. Thanks for informing us playoff players are going to be wanted. I am sure none of us would have thought of that.

Not only that...but these type of "rugged playoff style players" tend to take a real beating as much as they dish it out. Their bodies wear out...and when it happens, it can often be really sudden. Just compounding the fact that when they lose a step...they become highly ineffective, just chasing the play and can't get there in time to make an impact anymore. Which ultimately just turns into worse than a "meh" player...it often turns them into a real liability.

Especially when we're talking about guys like Dakota Joshua, who isn't the quickest, smoothest, most natural skater to begin with. He's put a lot of work into improving that aspect of his game...but when that skating starts to go, he's going to really struggle to keep up and play any kind of effective physical "playoff style game". Especially since he's such a late bloomer, he's not actually that young either.

I also think that if someone else hands Dakota that big contract...they're potentially going to be in for a rude awakening with his goal-scoring rate. Unsustainable shooting% buoyed his numbers this year, as did his great chemistry with Garland...which not every team has, as a 3rd line offensive play-driver.

Teams need to tread carefully and stay on the right side of the Ville Leino curve here... the really smart teams will be playing Money Puck on the next crop of these types of players, turning people like Klim Kostin into the next wave of reclamations and big playoff bodies.
