These players are grossly overrated. If I'm a GM, I'm taking my chance on high floor guys in my system, low risk UFAs and/or non tendered RFAs, and if I have to - trade deadline acquisitions.

Maybe a high end 4th line PK center who can win draws could be worth paying for but besides that . . IT'S A TRAP!

I was about to say the same thing. Those depth guys that become "popular" are doing so because they are playing for that next big contract and tend to provide value well above their current deal.

If you give any of them $4mil, you're hoping that they play to a $4mil level on a nightly basis. As you said, you want the guy making $2mil to provide the value of a $4-6mil guy.

This is how the league used to be before covid. Guys like Clarkson and Dave Bolland got severely overpaid because they played the right way and could play in teams top 9. Jim Benning basically filled his entire bottom 6 with these contracts.
