The Dallas Stars May Have Stolen the 2021 Draft Just Like They Stole the 2017 Draft

Dallas famously got quite the haul in 2017 with Miro Heiskanen (3rd overall), Jake Oettinger (26th overall) and Jason Robertson (39th overall).

Early returns seem like they may have done it again in 2021 with Wyatt Johnston (23rd overall) and Logan Stankoven (47th overall). Johnston is now the leading scorer from that Draft.

Incredible job by the Dallas scouting department.

Love to see good scouting, that doesn't get scared off by size or odd skating styles, get rewarded.

Heiskanen and Oettinger were great picks, but relatively obvious. But they've built 2/3rds of an excellent top 6 with absolutely excellent picks in Robertson, Hintz, Stankoven, and Johnston. Harley was another great pick, and I think Bourque and Bichsel will also turn out well.

Makes it easy to forgive Gurianov, Tufte, and Dellandrea.

What’s up with Johnston this year? Just a cold streak/bad puck luck I assume?

Bad puck luck primarily. Finally got a puck to go in tonight, I imagine the points will start coming now. He also had garbage linemates for most of the first like 10 games. Now with Stankoven which was our best line in the playoffs

Jim Nil and his staff have done an amazing job. The drafting has indeed been top-rate. Great mix of vets and youth in terms of raw talent. Surely at some point they can put it all together and get a Cup.
Can't believe Detroit let him get away. He was being touted as a great gm in waiting even while he was an assistant gm there.

At some point, you're 55 years old and a job opens up and Ken Holland wasn't going anywhere while the Owner had already made somewhat of a play to have Yzerman as GM under Holland as a POHO a couple years before that, and you can't let the opportunity go pass you.

Been drafting well for sure.
But Robertson is over rated imo.
One big season he will never repeat.
