Yeah I believe they said they wanted to wait until after the draft lottery, for whatever reason.

Because that's when they can be assembled for a press scrum. It makes sense that they wouldn't do it on the day of the draft lottery.

Leaks happen.

It’s a shame they didn’t plan this a little better for after/before the draft. There should have been an awareness of how this might be perceived by the fans (rightly or wrongly) - they should have been prepared to able to publicly support him, have a press conference, and build some momentum for him.

If he was officially in and meeting the media/fans people generally want to rally around ‘our’ guy.
Instead he’s sort of been left out there as a piñata.

Regardless of him not being anyone around here's first (or 2nd or 3rd) choice all we can really do at this point is cross our fingers and rally around him.

Here's hoping he's more Pete DeBoer than Dallas Eakins, two guys who had uneven starts to their NHL careers who have obviously gone in opposite directions since. I'll try not to judge him too harshly for his time in New Jersey with three of the top-four defencemen + Jack Hughes missing time, but the body of work in Vancouver isn't inspiring. Hopefully he's learned a lot since then and Staois will give him the tools to succeed.

Staois isn't off the hook by any stretch here, this team needs a major off-season re-shaping the defence and goaltending or it's not going to matter what Green does behind the bench.

I think this is a bit gloomy.

I’d venture that coaches care more about organization and roster construction than whether Nordstrom is available to them given the job uncertainty around their profession.

Berube thinking this team might not be a playoff team yet makes sense. The instability we had coming from the top in the Melnyk and Dorion era would for sure chase any talent away. So I don’t think this is necessarily a permanent state. Build a good organization and the coaches will come.
Travis Green seems more like an H&M kind of guy than a Holt Renfrew.

They got the donuts? Excellent....
Not a fan of hiring Green because he was a hated Leaf and has a lousy record as a head in the NHL. Because I'm hoping the Sens brain trust knows more about hiring a head coach than I do, I'll give Spitty T a chance and judge Staios on how it turns out instead of declaring him incompetent right now.

I know a lot about hockey on the ice and hockey players in general but I don't know much about evaluating coaches, which is why I don't talk much about it, outside of when the results speak for themselves, of course.

Hopefully they made the smartest hire here and Green becomes a winner.

For what it's worth, Corrado's description of how he runs things seems to fit what a lot of people say they want to a tee.

-Holds people accountable
-Extremely good at identifying how to motivate different types of players, personalizes his approach
-Very tough training camp
-Aggressive system that is hard to play against
-wants as much info as possible, uses adv stats to help inform decision
-good with young players

How will it pan out, idk, but between Corrado and Lalji, it doesn't seem to be doom and gloom. I'm interested to see who we get for assistants.

IF most of this materializes then it's great. We need to be hard to play against (and not just say it) and spend more time in the OZ than DZ. I want to a be a team like Florida or Carolina (sorry don't think we can be Tampa or Colorado)

They must have done their due diligence, this is not Dorion. They must have looked at the Vancouver years as a wash because of questionable management and think he can do a better job here.

I'm trying to make myself feel better about this, sure, but there's no way this was done without hundreds of hours of thought behind it

I mean, Andlauer group just invested a billion in the team, I hope they thought about this for a long time. Problem is because of past management failure for too long, the pressure to win is extremely high now. Unless we're fine with being the new Sabres.

So, Claude Julien seemed to want to come here, and I think most here would have been perfectly happy with him even if they'd have preferred a different guy

But, the team chose not to go that route, not because they couldn't hire him but because they preferred another option.

I think people need to consider that Staios chose Green because he thinks he was a top option and not because he was the only guy willing to come.
Green's NHL playing record as a defenceman is
GP 970
G
193
A 262
PTS 455

If Ridley Greig reaches that as a forward I would be surprised.
Green was a center, you might be thinking of Andy Greene

Corrado basically said that the Vancouver years were Green trying to coach under the joke of the league management team.

Will absolutely demand accountability and show what he doesn't want over and over until you get it.

Will focus on an aggressive, in your face style of hockey that is decidedly unpleasant to play against.

Gets to know the traits and personalities of each player to better get messages through

Really curious how Green answered the "Looking back, what would you do differently?" question in regards to . . . literally alll of his head coaching experience in the NHL.

Agreed this site is unbearable at the moment. The worst part of it is some people are so distraught they won't engage in any actual honest and factual conversation. It's impossible right now. Look at the Corrado slander. This is one of the best hockey analysts on the Planet that would educate absolutely everyone here on the sport. He actually played for Green. About as good a source as you could have. He's a regular on TSN1200 he has one or two spots a week and covers hockey on television for TSN. But is being ripped on like he'd a nobody. Sad state around here.

It was sarcasm sorry it wasn't evident.

Have you ever in your entire life seen an analyst slam a coaching hire on TV?

Honest question, because I haven’t.

Every single time a coach is hired, we hear about what a great fit he is.

Maybe Kypreos’ line about cost being a factor might be the closest I’ve seen.

In general I think they wear kid gloves when it comes to talking about coaches during their tenure because they’re either friends or they want continued access for interviews and insight.

It’s only after a coach gets canned that the stories all start to pour out.

Personally, the endorsement of anyone I see on TV has zero impact on my expectations because I’ve seen it so so so many times before.

As for Green’s past, they could hire Darcy Tucker and I wouldn’t bat an eye, if the team improved. I don’t care who he played for. As for his playing career against us, Travis Green was a huge factor in that one series because of his face off ability. All Toronto played for was a whistle in their own zone and the puck would be out of the zone. No amount of pressure led to any momentum because we lost every offensive zone faceoff with him out there.

Could he be the right guy? Sure, of course. Most coaches lose before they win and become “great coaches”. But I’m not going to lie to myself about my level of enthusiasm about this hire at this point in time.

One thing I'm worried about is Green seeing himself in guys like Kelly and playing him more than needed, I remember that he used to do the same kind of thing with Markus Granlund when I would watch Vancouver years ago.

That could absolutely be a confirmation bias on my part, and could be something that isn't a worry whatsoever. I have no doubts that Grieg is going to be a massive part of the team under his watch, and rightfully so.

Ive heard one of his shortcomings is he picks favourites and refuses to move away from those favourites. So he will completely forgive lapses in play for one players and glue to the bench the next guy over for doing far less egregious plays. It’s basically accountability for some and his favourites have none.

I want the coach to get our players to stop floating around and buy in to the play in the D zone. Accountability needs to be from the top down.

I think you have to take what anybody says about him with a grain of salt, that goes for Fans and analysts

That said, you can take at face value some of the things Corrado said, like how he runs a tough camp, or how he likes to run an Aggressive system. Will he get good results, who knows, Corrado didn't go so far as to say he would or wouldn't, because in the end nobody knows, but he can speak to how he operates.
