I would agree with this approach because I’ve always viewed Dubas and Bozo the Keefe as being the biggest problems.

Having a competent GM who understands how to construct a roster that compliments the strengths of the core and compensates for the weaknesses of the core would be a massive upgrade for the franchise.

Having an NHL-calibre coach who can establish consistent line pairings, implement an effective scheme, make in-game adjustments and hold players accountable is something the Leafs haven’t had for the past half decade.

You almost certainly lose the trades so not the worst idea. IMO, the priorities should be shedding Murray’s cap, shoring up the d and building team toughness. If they can do these things while keeping the core, fine. Also time to get a new coach.

Absolutely. I think this is one of the few uncontestable points the majority of Leafs Nation can agree upon.

Fix the glaring coaching problem first. Makes sense to me. You can trade a core player and deal from a position of strength after they are extended if need be (assuming we dont hand out nmcs like candy).

Taken at his word Shanahan did offer Dubas an extension and did think the team had a good season. We haven't heard a single word from Shanahan so far that he thinks there's something wrong with the core. And we probably never will. Just like we never heard a single negative word about the outgoing GM.

This core doesn't have it.

This has to be accepted because on paper this year's team was more than good enough for a cup run. Marner's performance at the end of the Tampa series and then the entire Florida series was unacceptable.

Besides a few good bursts of hockey from Nylander, the entire core flopped.

A coach can be blamed when core players are putting up good numbers but the tactics are letting them down. In this case, the coach is terrible but so are the core players when it comes to pressure situations.

A perfect example would be Rielly of how a core player should perform. He almost always shows up in the playoffs even when the coaching is terrible or he's stuck with a rubbish partner.

The issue is in round 2 is we got one (1) goal from Matthews, Tavares and Marner across 5 games.

It's hard to know what to make of the players for the reasons you have outlined, but on the face of it, our allocation of cap across the team doesn't feel like a good strategy as a result of core pay.

Ideally we paint a new vision and they keep the core pieces that fit, using the extra money to make the rest of it work.

I wouldn't expect an organization to clearly telegraph its true intentions. Regardless, changes at the coaching and GM level, in addition to shuffling out pending UFAs, can still bring a new look to the team. Can also conceivably make an argument for the core having an upside that the outgoing GM and (also outgoing?) coach might not have.
