Did I wake up months into the past? First Mika with Covid and a Buch trade thread?

It's easy to Monday morning QB this situation. Bottom line is Mika Strome Fox Kaako Chytil Laf need contracts now or thr near future. You can't wait procrastinate every scenario.

KAM needs a new contract after 22-23. That could become a very expensive one too if he keeps taking strides like he has - and why wouldn't he he does have immense potential.

the biggest prob here is we self rented him to us for too long

seemingly Oil were willing to go top 10 for the guy yr before when there was more value b'c his productive contract had more term

I wanted to move him for 10OA or Broberg 8OA
but
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

everyone had to disagree.

Self indulgent hubris, to think we were better off, when we didn't have the horses and a blind man could see we were not gonna make the playoffs, to go the way we did.

Not only Buch, but guys like Brendan Smith could have fetched a 4h

You take the effin 4th

Once and for all this win now policy has to bend, buckle and break to reality.

bern is right
build
build
build
and then dominate

we could be at domination level now if we did a few more things more intelligently

but we are still not too far away

we need to recognize we are not keeping strome or geo, and sell first decent offer, no waiting til last min and reducing value b'c time of production is less b'c season is further along

deal the vets
play the real core
so what if there are mistakes and a learning curve

just effin do it properly already

then we can dominate
and have a real chance at the cup

That's because we were all suckers and believed the NY Rangers letter to the fans that they would do a proper rebuild.

I guess I sort of give them props for not just kicking the can down the road like Minnesota and Pittsburgh. But trading away all your vets for assets and then signing long term top heavy contracts and not giving your young draft picks either top ice time in the NHL or leaving them to develop in lower levels is speaking out of both sides of their mouth.

Sather got his yes man in Drury. I knew Gorton wouldn't last because he was going against what Sather believed in. Saw it at the press conference when they asked Sather if they would make the playoffs and he said yes and Gorton had to interject and say that wasnt the primary goal, it was to rebuild the right way and there would.be pain.

Let's not make more or less of it than what it is.
It is what it is.
It could be a lot, lot worse.
Howev,
they have to not screw it up going forward

get w/bern plan
get down to an essential core of best youth
w/minimal necessary vets to supplement

do not panic
and no effing overpaying which by definition usually subtracts from the net result in the long term

OK Bern, here's your constructive response.

The Rangers tried to trade Buchnevich to Edmonton. It appears that the deal fell through because at the time Edmonton was in a salary cap fix and they didn't want to acquire Buchnevich without having some cost certainty. So no sale.

At what point would someone given the Rangers a 4th for Smith? No one wanted that salary at any cost.

And you are welcome to try and build, build, build, but eventually that build, build, build has to translate to win, win, win. Check out the Buffalo Sabres as the current poster buy for failed build, build, build.

The Rangers would have gladly accepted a reasonable offer for Georgiev. They've shopped him. There are no takers.

What exactly are you going to get for Strome? A second in a draft that may not be as strong as some once speculated. Who fills his gap then? And who is going to walk into the locker room and tell the other 20 guys that you've just given up your second line center for a lottery ticket?

There's your constructive response. Now lets lock the f***ing thread.

Some bad moves you shrug your shoulders, think, eh, could have went either way, win some/lose some. Others, you know they're terrible moves the second they happen, and when proved right it only becomes more infuriating. The Buch trade is definitely the latter.

Terrible asset management, terrible return, terrible philosophy on the return to begin with (tuffnes that paid no dividends to start, and certainly won't now). The only saving grace was Blais, possibly, "putting it all together," and yet, even then, people were like, "Players injured as often as Blais tend to never put it all together." And wouldn't you know it, Blais lasted 14 games, so everything that could have went wrong so far has gone wrong. Finding a good player with the draft pick is the last hope against full blown disaster.

It's just all a bummer. This is such a microcosm of Rangers fandom.

thanks for time and courtesy of thoughtful response.
I disagree, and find honest exchanges like this post mortem to be worthwhiile and useful.

1. Buch
My understanding/take is they made the offer, we were greedy b'c we wanted our cake and eat it too, so we waited and waited and waited and self rented ourselves an increasingly productive player instead of cutting the cord quickly, hoping to get the benefit of his production and still ALSO return most of what was offered earlier.
Oil were willing to pony up even tho Buch production earlier in his deal was not as high as at the end due to he ultimately continued to improve, they would go there b'c the extra term at that time [which Rangers seized for themselves] would still have meant sufficient player production from whoever held his contract.
If a long term extension were an issue, that was never a real prob for Oil.
NY surely saw first Zib likely and then Fox certainly were gonna = big $$$$ so no Buch after last season.
Oil howev had ample room, off top of my head until about when they added Keith.
And in addition to getting paid, Buch would have upgraded to playing w/McD + LeoDrai which could only help further with his personal totals.

So in conclusion, it was our own effin greed which needs to be called out here.
This whole win now shit is fine until it collapses on itself and becomes counterproductive long term.

---------

2. 4th for Smith
That's what was reported on the boards.
Also at that point with more than half the season over, his 4.35 or whatev salary was like 2+-ish.
And NY could have retained if worth it.
Point is almost every offer should have been exploited to turn short term pain into long term gain.

3. Sabres and stop building
Buf is not a model for success.
Just b'c the failed to execute does not mean you give up.
Building is a prerequisite to adding enuf talent to succeed.
The only way around that is to constantly win every trade, to such degree that you are trading often and getting a swindle here and there. Not realistic.
That approach is further impeded by the need to yield to the cap.
While at some point player production commands level of pay, initially Youth is cheaper and a required component to field a cap compliant team.
The better you build, the more flexible your roster options.

That Buf failed often is not a valid overrule.
That Chicago and Boston have generally succeeded in building strong Cup winners and it can be done proves my point.

4. Geo
on this we agree, appears no takers, we still need to move him even if price has to be dropped

5 Strome
Math overrides and overrules here.
He can't be extended.
And a Tavares he walks for nothing on a self rental if un f***ING NOT ACCEPTABLE.

This is part of the pt
We need to give Krav and Barron those mins.

So that is my productive retort.
My vote is no close, free speech.

Yes. We could've traded him AFTER this season.
It would have been the same outcome. I initially thought he would get a 2year deal to buy some time.... we do not know what his camp wanted/demanded.

We created space for players like Laf and Kravtsov. It's not even 20 games in. Kravtsov blew it. Laf has not been good enough. Hindsight is 20/20.

Also signing a guy for 5 years just to trade him doesn't set a good precedent. These are humans, not inanimate objects.

Trading Buch was the right move. You could argue the return.

It’s ironic we added all this toughness yet our goalies are getting ran, our tough players are getting slewfooted, etc. Buchnevich would’ve responded much more aggressively to any of these incidents than any of these tough guys we brought in.

I think he would’ve signed for cheaper than what he did in STL too, the guy is still clicking like on Rangers posts, and was literally on our Instagram livestream during our home opener commenting crying emojis. That is not normal. I bet he will be a wreck during his video tribute at the Garden. He loved being a Ranger and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up one again later in his career
Buchnevich 7 years 49 mil to the Rangers in 2025 confirmed.

All jokes aside I’m all for that and hoping it happens.
