When are they going to fix the search on this forum? It's been months lol, I refuse to believe it's this hard to find a provider.

My son is becoming obsessed with basketball, but I refuse to pay for cable just for that. It's so easy to get kittens for NHL games that I can throw on the chromecast, but for NBA I'm at a loss. I've tried unsuccessfully for 3 games now to find a source I do that from for NBA games. Anyone have a favorite kitten source for basketball?

Any recommendations for good non-franchise scifi films?
Ice Pirates (Underated sci-fy comedy from the 80s. It's silly but fun. Robert Urich, Anjelica Huston, Ron Perlman and John Carradine star.)
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (Peter Strauss, Molly Ringwald, Michael Ironside and Ernie Hudson...80s. Again a bit silly but fun. Was originally done in 3D.)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension (Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Christopher Lloyd...do I need to say more? I recommend the version with the alternate beginning. Wait, alternate beginning???? Yes, this one also might be accused of being a bit silly.)

Haha. Not quite the vibe I had in mind, but man, the cast of that last one is wild!

Arrival is the one that immediately comes to mind. Probably the best original sci-fi of the last decade imo. Annihilation, Ex Machina, Interstellar, Looper, Dune and Edge of Tomorrow are all great in their own ways too. My guilty pleasure is Alita Battle Angel. Not a great movie on the whole but it has some truly awe-inspiring visuals and fight scenes.

Yeah, I should check that out. Interstellar and Ex Machina I've seen. Ex Machina was definitely one of my favorite movies when it came out.

And we won't look into why that might have been when I was 19, but what we will say is, it was a good movie and I saw Tomb Raider in the theater.

Netflix made a sci-fi movie that wasn't half bad a while back called, "I am Mother". About a robot raising a girl in a post-apocalyptic world. It's more of the thinking type sci-fi rather than a shoot 'em up movie.

Another sci-fi movie that features an incredible performance by Robin Williams is Bicentennial Man. It was based very loosely on the Isaac Asimov novel, "The Positronic Man".

Gattaca
Solaris
The Adjustment Bureau
Minority Report
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Night Watch
Arrival
Galaxy Quest

All I can think of off the top of my head.
Sweet. I've almost watched Solaris for a couple of years now.

I just finished Sunshine. Wasn't half bad. Very reminiscent of Event Horizon.

Arrival is next on the list, since I have it readily available.

Ah yes, Sunshine wasn't bad at all. I enjoy most Danny Boyle films.

Event Horizon struck me as one of those movies where the idea was much better than the movie itself. Could've been an all-timer, but that director usually doesn't stick the landing.

I dunno if Pitch Black counts since they tried to turn that into a franchise, but that one was good IMO, second one was bleh, haven't bothered with the third one.

I loved the idea of Event Horizon. It freaked my wife out completely, and I did enjoy it but came away feeling slightly unsatisfied because there was just so much opportunity there for that thing to have been incredible. And I'm not talking about bigger or better CGI, I'm talking about directing and storytelling.

Pitch Black was a great flick. Escape from Butcher's Bay was a fantastic game. But the rest of the Riddick stuff is seriously lacking. Weirdly enough, my wife said Sci-Fy did like a 15-minute short featuring the bounty hunter from Pitch Black and Van Diesel as Riddick. She caught it after they played Pitch Black back when they were promiting one of the newer films, but we haven't been able to find it anywhere since then.

If you like films like Event Horizon and Pitch Black, you ought to watch Below. Darren Aronofsky script directed by David Twohy. It's a WWII submarine movie, where you don't really know if the sub is cursed, just has bad luck, is haunted or what. But the atmosphere is great. It doesn't have the claustrophobia of Das Boot but it's still a fairly tense film.

Yeah, I loved the vibe of what Event Horizon was, but it does really kind of fall apart. I'm not saying Sunshine did as much, but I had a similar sense of "Okay well, I guess." Also, thematically Sunshine was like a 10-year anniversary celebration of Event Horizon.

Honestly, these guys really gotta stop diverting for distress signals of previously missing ships in all these films.

Funny thing is, now that I've cut the cord, I find myself flipping through endless generic exactly looking the same movies on netflix. There's 500 movies available and not a damn thing worth watching. They started making content instead of purchasing or making shows. Content is not entertainment, at least not for me anymore. Just about to cut all streaming except for Disney Plus...gotta keep my hockey fix and the wife's Marvel fix satiated.
I'll grab this over here, since we've been talking about streaming movies.

Netflix is really bad for movies for this reason. Chock full of direct-to-VHS level bullshit. And dare I say it, women keep watching B-movies on Netflix just because it comes up and they don't like picking. End up with awful horror movies getting overhyped like "This was the scariest movie I've ever seen OMG, btw I've only seen the movie It and this wasn't quite as good."

I recommend cycling one or two services based on specific content you decide you'd like to watch. I've had Disney (which doesn't include ESPN here) for a while now, but after I'm done with some of the movies I have lined up, I'll probably get Netflix for a while and go through a backlog.
