GTA2 won't happen

Toronto 2 becomes more likely if someone is willing to build a barn and pay indemnity. Even then, it will never happen if the league's owners doesn't want it to.

The problem with GTA2 is simplistic. They could be around 100 years, they still would not be the leafs. LOve them or hate them, the leaf fans are a loyal bunch. No matter what happened the team would forever be the weak sister of the area

Were the guys who didn't vote Pegula worst owner sniffing glue or something? He is the single biggest failure of an owner in modern history taking one of the strongest and most respected franchises and totally destroying it beyond repair. In terms of just obliterating a franchise where such a thing would be unthinkable the only comparable I can think of in all of pro sports is Dan Snider in Washington.

You say that as if Toronto 1 beats either of those teams
And using the Mets as an example is just so awful because there are multiple points in history where the Mets were THE team in terms of popularity in NY (And has it's roots in the very reason the team exists: to bring National League baseball back to NY). Clippers and Nets would be the perfect comparison.

Maybe, if there are $1B+ reasons given to the two franchises that would be impacted with territory infringement (TML Buffalo)

Sure, but the rest of the league is going to want their beaks wet, too. The other thirty teams aren’t going to be interested if only the Leafs and Sabres walk away with a windfall.

Any market that already has a team there or nearby will assuredly need to fork over territorial indemnities and expansion fees to remotely have a chance at happening. $2 billion for GTA2 would likely be on the low end, and that’s not even account for whatever costs would be needed for a new/refurbished arena, and at that point is there any financial realism to expect someone willing to pay that much when there haven’t been any seemingly interest parties at well less than that?

I mean, barring the barrier to entry, I don’t see why a second team in the Toronto area couldn’t at least carve out a niche for themselves and be moderately successful (financially speaking). It’s just that the barrier to entry is so high. The Islanders, Angels, and Mets came in for their various reasons (the point about the Mets up thread being one of them) with lower barriers to entry. While a second Toronto team would play second fiddle to the Leafs for the foreseeable future in terms of popularity, if they actually did happen, I just don’t see why they wouldn’t at least have a moderate amount of success in at least turning a profit.

When you put it all on the table that way though, that doesn’t sound like a great choice by either the league or the prospective owner when there are alternatives on the table instead. Not quite the slam dunk some might talk it up to be.

Of course, this is all just my opinion, which isn’t necessarily the most informed, but I like to think I have at least an inkling of knowledge about the league’s business considering how much of it was constantly shoved in my face as a Coyotes fan.

3 no income tax teams plus likely the state with the most nhlers from USA.

Owners, guess since it’s agents it’s the ones who give the ok on a deal. Pegula pays players, Condon more tight on it.

GTA2 is just a stupid idea, I say put a team in Quebec City along with Houston Atlanta and Phoenix.
Why?

Major USA markets in Baseball, Basketball and Football host multiple teams on one market.

Toronto and hockey isnt different in the sense that it’s a large population that enjoys the sport and many find the current marketplace underserved by pro alternatives .

You say it’s a “stupid” idea and then proceed to not support your comment with any facts or arguments. That’s stupid.

In history… sure, but it’s been 35 years.

I wouldn't call it a "stupid idea" personally... but it's not great.

The Isles only came into being because of the WHA. The Ducks only came into being because of Disney, and the other owners willing to give up their cut of an expansion fee to the Kings so the Ducks could join. The Devils only exist in New Jersey because they had an owner willing to pay for relocation, build a rink, *and* pay indemnification to the Rangers, Isles, and Flyers. I'm sure I glossed over some of these details, but still.

Can a prospective GTA2 owner afford to pay off the Leafs (and possibly Sabres)? More importantly, does a GTA2 team (or a QC team, for that matter) create new fans of the sport? Personally, I would argue not.

GTA2 is unlikely because it doesn’t really create any new revenue. It’ll poach fans from BUF and TOR but will it really create a new group of fans who didn’t exist? Not really. Better to go to markets that have no team and an entire city of potential new revenue sources.

And all valid reasons why it could again be a possibility. There are always scenarios that deals can be made if parties want something. Both sides.
