It's not an accident that Jack Johnson has been the worst +/- player on every single roster he has been on for the past 5 years. The notion that the Canucks should even consider acquiring him is laughable. The only redeeming thing for the Blue Jackets is that they might end up with a Top 5/10 pick out of that trade.

Yep. I'm not sure there's anyone on the Canucks I'd trade for JJ because that means that he might actually play a game here. *shudders*

It's not like Wiese has much more to fall back on either. People ooh and ahhh over his Dutch numbers and laud the fact AV uses him occasionally on the PK, but really, has he shown any offensive ability so far? No. Does anyone really think he should be out there killing penalties if we have a healthy lineup? I certainly don't. Has he ever had a fight where he wasn't getting his face mashed? Not that I can recall. Does he hit with any real consistency or authority? No, not really.

When the playoffs roll around I'll take Volpatti on my 4th line before Wiese simply because he plays with purpose. He will run over people and he'll set a tone, if the gloves need to be dropped (not as common in the playoffs, but it still occurs) he'll go, and there is a better chance he wins than Wiese. I think he could be a guy like Steve Webb...a heavy duty bang and crasher.

7:50 mark

Volpatti is a 4 minute a night player, with no upside beyond that.

I can't recall seeing Weise getting his face mashed in recent times, fought noted goon Konopka twice two weeks ago and held his own, fought Nystrom last week looked fine.

He's not Colton Orr...not sure what you want here. I'm fine with his play, I'm sure we'll see him slide into his defined role better now that the rest of the forwards are now healthy.

Disagree.

OK, maybe 4 minutes was an exaggeration.

His upside is a 4th liner, he doesn't have the requisite skills to go beyond that. Seems to be a good guy, a good teammate, and I like having him on the team.

The only times he'll ever get more than 10 minutes at the NHL level will be in blowouts IMO.

Sorry, disagree completely...not saying Wiese is a terrible option, I just think Volpatti makes a far more effective 4th line energy player.

I don't buy that Canucks want a 4th line that merely provides energy. That's certainly not the role they deployed them in last season and I'm pretty sure they want to go back to that. Now that Volpatti is off it you'll see them getting a ton of defensive zone starts and playing tough minutes.

No, sorry. Patrick Burke was the one that mentioned that teams do it in his AMA on Reddit (although he didn't seem to think much of it).

I see, thanks anyway. It just seems like the kind of thing Gillis would do, having seen and heard what he's all about. Would be very surprised if this weren't the case.

Funnily enough, Patrick's dad attends that sports statistics conference thing (can't remember the name of it) and also isn't much of a believer of their usage either, apparently.

You're both right. They want a line that can bang and crash + play those minutes.

Who's available on the farm for a cup of coffee when injuries hit? Seems like the past few years they've used the 4th line at times as a place for rookies to get a brief taste of the big leagues.
Is Pinizzotto still Canucks property?

Here's an odd thought but I wonder if we could get Alex Semin as a rental if the Hurricanes are out of it. I think he's signed on a one year deal at 6.7 mil. I think he would fit this team like a glove and be downright scary bouncing between the top two lines. I imagine the Hurricanes are going to try hard to re-sign him but Semin has been a player I've wanted for awhile.

I can just see Pinizotto called up to finally play his first NHL game only to get injured in a plane crash.

Incoming Pauser and russian haters from our board..

Hurricanes are going to be re-signing him. Doesn't seem like he's going to be available nor does it seem like Semin wants to leave.

1. I really doubt Carolina would be far out of the playoff picture by the trade deadline. At worst they'll be a bubble team, and bubble teams don't often sell off assets, they try to add players to make the playoffs.

2. There is almost no way we could afford Semin's cap hit.

Fair enough, I was saying it was a long shot. Just daydreaming about Semin on this team.

A more realistic option, especially with the regime change in Columbus would be Nick Foligno. Perfect age for this team, just starting to come into his own and is largely underrated. I think he has limited offensive potential but he's constantly banging around the net and plays a balls to the wall game. Something team needs and is lacking right now. I also think his game would flourish in our system. I can't imagine it'd be too terribly difficult to get him.

Colin Wilson would be a great fit, can distribute the puck to Kesler

Don't think Nashville will trade him now though

I'd love to get JJ

but Columbus would be stupid to trade him

TSN Insider Trading said the Sharks are looking to trade and Boyle's name has come up. He may be too expensive for the Canucks but Clowe and Murray both are UFA's next summer. I'd love to see them in Canucks jerseys, but may be a bit of a pipe dream.
