The All Purpose Video Game Thread Part Iv

Does anyone have experiences with those many 3000 games in one devices? is it hot trash?
I have a Miyoo Mini +. It's fantastic. But I recommend getting a real SD card, not the provided one, and putting you own OS on it and roms. Some roms they provide work, most don't. Also, if you have a good android phone, use that. Might be able to use iPhone, but I am not experienced with that.

Check out Retro Game Corps on YouTube. He will give you all the information you need on retro handhelds.

FFXI was the GOAT. Under appreciated. Valkurm Dunes where you learn to function in a party for the first real time. Roaming NMs with actual valuable drops. The first run to Jeuno at level 20 before you get a chocobo. That whole quest line to get your airship pass. I loves San d’Oria but I also loved the Quadav stronghold near Bastok. Windy was never my city. The whole tragedy of the expedition in Xarc and the Shadowlord. End game fights with Kirin and weekend Dynamis alliances. I fell off after the Crystaline Prophecy expansion or whatever was after that. With XIV I haven’t jumped back in to Dawntrail yet.
The memories with your friends and linkshell were incredible. They did an amazing job pairing the right music and zones. I miss merit parties with endless chains. NM hunting. HNM's. Sky. Sea. Messing around with Gil farmers. ZNM's. It was special. No game will ever hit like that.

I still remember my buddy and brother, months before the game came out, bought a FF guide book. I was thinking about starting a blm taru with a Summoner sub. The guide was hilariously bad. They recommended War/Whm so tanks can heal themselves. Or MNK/WHM. LOL.

FFXIV is fun in its own way but it's just not the same.

No absolutely. FFXIV is story driven and the story is really good. It’s a mainline FF game built around MMO basics but I think most people play alone. FFXI was an experience. I still remember some of my best friends from that game’s character names. My HNM, Sky, Dynamis linkshell was called Yellowcake. Whenever I was bored I remember I’d just go camp any of Argus, Valkurm Emperor, Leaping Lizzy, Onzozo. Even after they changed all the drops to rare/ex and I didn’t really need them/could just afford the AH versions, it was just a nostalgic pass time. The AH was so much better than the market boards too.

Those are cheap Chinese junk. I use my PSP as my primary emulation console, you can play NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, SMS, GG, Genesis, MD, Arcade Games, TurboGrafx-16, Atari, all PS1 games, a few N64 games & of course PSP.

I also have a PS Vita which is a great emulation console as well but it doesn't expand emulation to any newer gen consoles than PSP but people have made some ports for the Vita including: GTA San Andreas, GTA III, GTA Vice City, Bully, Simpsons Hit & Run, Cuphead.

You can find PSP's cheaper than Vitas though and I think the PSP is the superior console, it's form factor, UI, etc is the greatest ever imo. Game library is also incredible. Vitas game library was shit

I preferred the Vita but the PSP was WAY ahead of its time.

I have multiple for sale if anyone wants one.

The PSP is still possibly my favorite system ever.

I think I said it in this thread before but I stupidly took the MicroSD I was using on my PSP and gave it to my daughter for her little digital camera. I had so much CFW-related stuff on there, so many emulators, PS games, etc. Everything had custom cover art, all the bells and whistles. And the save data... I had my Castlevania SOTN perfect save from the original PS1. Lost it all, LOL. Couldn't bring myself to try to rebuild it.

Anyway yeah PSP is tits.

The PS Play app that lets you play from your phone is pretty legit if you get one of those backbone controller devices that clips onto your phone. I can lay in bed and play any PS5 game from my phone and the experience is identical.

I got the PS Portal from my wife for Christmas and I love it. I have a nice PS5 setup down in my man cave in the basement but I barely go down there now. I just sit in the living room and play from there, LOL.

When Expedition 33 comes out, I might go back down and play on the big screen since that's an actual graphically impressive game. Lately all I've been playing are pixel or pixel-type games and now RoboCop, which is all perfect for the Portal or the phone/controller devices you mentioned.

Same here. I wouldn’t say my set up is particularly impressive but we have a 65” and a soundbar, but since the lady is pregnant and likes when I sit in bed with her at night, I pretty much exclusively play with the remote play.

I got the 30th Anniversary Portal and I can't bring myself to open it.

Both were exceptional. FFXIV is a terrific game. You can get a lot done on your own, unlike FFXI which was a real grind. I liked FFXI more but you couldn't really do much on your own. Soundtrack on both games were amazing. I find myself listening to some tracks every now and then and nostalgia hits me hard. Especially with 11.

The nostalgia hits so hard here. I played FFXI for 3 years, from late middle school into early high school, and it was definitely the most obsessed I’ve ever been with a game. Probably to a fault - I was very much on the road to being addicted and I fortunately quit before it got out of hand. My parents called it “the game” and I’ve never seen them happier than when I told them I was done.

I got about 5-6 friends to play with me and we all chose jobs that complimented each other. I’d say I got about 80% of the way to level 75 with at least one of them in my party. Definitely some rough patches - one of my friends got my account info once and was slowly stealing from me for a few months - but I still speak and see most of them to this day.

I was obsessed with NM camping. I got a peacock charm once from Argus and spent way too many hours in Castle Oztroja camping. The first time I ever got an NM drop I had decided to party with a rando I met that day. My idiotic 12 year old self trusted him to go sell the item and also believed him when he said the game “glitched” and he lost the item. I was devastated. About two years later I logged in to see that he had sent me the money from my cut.

Later on, I used to form parties with the characters that were definitely Gil farmers and quartermaster the drop right as we killed the NM. It shockingly worked a few times. I was an asshole, but I actually think that game taught me a lot about real life. I was definitely 5-10 years younger than most people I was playing with on a daily basis.

I also got pretty good at gaming the auction house. One time my server was experiencing hyperinflation and I sold literally my entire inventory right before I took a few weeks off from the game for summer vacation. Came back to a normal economy and I was set for the rest of the time I played. I love how important Gil was in that game.

I still think my greatest accomplishment was lying to a group of ~10 people that I knew the spawn date/time for Dobsonflies, which dropped the voyager’s sallet. My friend and I brought an entire alliance party up there and sure enough the flies had spawned. We all got voyager’s sallets over the course of 3-4 days. That was the only piece of gear I ever had that had super experienced players messaging me with props. I never got into HNMs - too time consuming and by the end my parents were limiting my play time (lol).

In the early years, before I was rich, I used to make my younger sister log in when I wasn’t playing as her own character - a tarutaru - and beg for Gil in Windhurst. That’s pretty much entirely how I afforded my first chainmail armor. I still remember buying it for 16k Gil and accidentally selling it for about 500 because I didn’t understand how the auction house worked then.

Like you guys I listen to the music every once in awhile. Just a total nostalgia trip. And sorry for stealing the mic — I could keep going with stories for days.

I played XI from like 03-08 non stop and then on/off until maybe 2011. I tried coming back for some of those servers that claim to everything the old way but it just wasn’t the same. I played the original XIV a bit before it was shutdown and then rejoined fairly shortly after it was revived in late 2013 or so. I’ve messed with it fairly consistently since and am level 90 on like every tank, DRG, BRD and NIN but haven’t jumped in on Dawntrail yet. I will. Life’s been busy.

Unfortunately, as awesome as 14 looks, I can never get into online gaming again. It was too addicting for me and I’m glad I got out before it got out of hand.

I have 5, I think maybe 4 as well.

Short list:

Eras are separated and incongruous (cities "reset" each era)
Planes are not units that are cyclable (ie... every turn you have to look for them/remember where they are and to use them)
The "commanders" of said aerial units are a pain to use
Strange "goals" leading to victory points
Battles that you don't initiate are blind. Ie... an Independent Warrior runs into your scout and slays them. You don't know about it. Your city XYZ is taken over - you don't know about it. Your battleship The USS Kreider was sunk - you didn't see it, how you lost it, or who did it.
UI is horrendous
Map and units are very hard to see
Leaders detached from their actual civilizations (Ie.. Ghandi leading the U.S.)
and more

It also, on the whole, just feels unfinished and not fleshed out. For a game in development this long and having a following as large as it does, it's just a massive disappointment.

Just want to point out the game I've been hyping, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, comes out tomorrow and has the review embargo lifted today. It sits at a 92 on Meta/OpenCritic with a lot of big sites already weighing in.
Clearing some space tonight so I can download and play it tomorrow. Game looks amazing, hopefully it lives up to the hype.
